Ep. 7. One of these has a design flaw! - Playing Smash or Pass with my Pottery

  • Let me explain a bit more about this video:
Welcome to the game of Smash or Pass the Mystery Mould edition!
Smash or Pass is a game where you make a yes or no decision on an object, person, or thing by using the word 'smash' or 'pass'. The game is typically played with 'smash' meaning yeah that's good and 'pass' meaning I will pass on that. However, as we smash the things we don't like in pottery and pass the things on that we do, I will be playing it the other way.
SMASH= The piece is not good and will not be going to the next stages. The piece will be smashed hehe not like the usual way.
PASS= it's good and I will take it to the next steps.
If you have been a long time follower you will know that I have my Mystery Mould series where I unveil these moulds one at a time and decorate them. The pieces that pass this game will feature in the series when I start it up again. The smashes will not but this video series gives me an opportunity to clear out some moulds that won't fit in my new studio or maybe aren't the best for the series. Some are seriously cursed!
But wait, won't it spoil the mystery?
Yes and No! The mystery mould series will return but will have a mix of pieces from this series as well as some picked randomly like normal. By the time I get to them, I think you will either have forgotten about the piece or be super eager to see how it comes to life in the series. I am actually excited to hear your ideas on the ones we do pass on to the series as I may be able to implement them into the video and the design of the artwork. I am excited for the debates and discussions about whether I made the right decision for each mould. I am also excited to cull some moulds so I have less to move when I get the shelves for my new space.
Wait, are you smashing the moulds??
Ok, not smashing the moulds! I am smashing the cast it makes inside. I will clean the moulds up and find new homes for them that will appreciate them. AS much as I can see potential in all the moulds, I do want to focus on the ones that spark the most inspiration, have the grooviest of ideas and can be shaped and crafted in new ways. The smashed moulds are great but great for someone else who they are a better fit for. I will share details where you can get these moulds very soon.
    Are you ready to play?
I will be sharing a poll after each episode over on Instagram. If you think I made the wrong decision on the pieces, come over and vote. I may bring something back if you vote for it back!

That pitcher is the bee's knees! It looks like part of an old washstand set -- there would be a big matching bowl with it that the pitcher sits in when you're not using the set. When you want to wash up, the pitcher gets filled with fresh water and then you pour the water in the bowl and wash your face and hands. Of course the pitcher would also be beautiful on its own to water plants or make lemonade or hold flowers! I would have passed the teacup on, but only because it's such a classic shape and could be multi-use. If you already have enough cup molds, I can see why it would be a smash for you. Also, I love your whole outfit, but especially that dress/pinafore. So sweet and vibrant! Thanks for another wonderful Friday morning video for me to wake up to!

That pitcher/jug would look stunning with your native florals, and the honeypot lid is beyond precious. I'm sure you've seen the news story floating around the internet, but at one point here in the USA, we had a hive of bees that were producing multicolored honey because they'd found some discarded candies that they'd started sipping the food coloring from, so if you even wanted to do a little rainbow-hive, you could!

I've seen lots of folks giving suggestions on how to make the "smash" pieces work throughout the series, but I generally agree when you choose to smash. Sometimes it's just not worth it to make adjustments on a piece that's 'just okay' when there's likely a piece on the shelf that would work better, or when you know exactly what does work for you and you can make it just they way you want from scratch. I'm excited to see what you'll do with the vase/pitcher. Keep doing what brings you joy.

The large jug is probably from an old-fashioned wash basin set. The jug and a large wash bowl would sit on a wooden stand. The jug held the clean water for washing yourself in your room before the advent of washrooms/bathrooms in old houses that generally didn't have indoor plumbing.
You may find a large basin/bowl that matches the jug. I've always liked these sets. Very nice to have in historic styled homes. You could paint them in any style you liked from elegant Delpht ware to kitchy 70s style flowers and country style flowers. Lots of room to express yourself. Would look gorgeous in your wattle flowers. I'm in Canada so I love seeing your Australian designs.

I also thought just taking the handle off the first one would work because the shape of the cup is so nice, but because it's so simple it really wouldn't be worth the extra effort. There's loads of cups and mug molds, and you probably have several more in your mystery mold stash anyway! The bee lid is adorable and if it was able to fit on the koala it would be like an adorable little hat. I'm sure you'll find a match eventually. The real winner for me is the jug, the detail at the top is really nice and makes it special but the base is perfect for decorating however you feel at the moment. It would be equally stunning in a plain color (or gradient) or a really detailed embellished design!

    Re: the comically small handle
not that it would help your preference at all, but for handles like that the idea is you pinch your first finger and thumb together between the loop and lift it up that way, usually using your middle finger placed below the curve of the handle to rest most of the weight of the cup on it. Nowadays we all (reasonably so) want huge handles to firmly hold up a cup with multiple fingers, but that teacup's is still a holdover from when "high tea" was an event, and there were some assumed impracticalitys done in the name of being ~elegant~

I've never done slip casting but I do a lot of hand building details (as much as someone who only occasionally works with clay can do a lot of something) and that looks fun to build off of. BTW I haven't said it yet, but I like this series. It is a little insight into how you choose pieces and designs. 😊

I love the last jug and would love to see contrasting styles of decoration. It could be fun to do one with a tradtional style, perhaps with a floral design on the side and one with bright almost pop art colours.

Your outfits are always so cute! Im always amazed by your ability to do these videos with your outfits virtually unscathed. You have such control over your movements with the clay, just amazed

I agree on your choices. Even though the cup is a fantastic shape, you can always use what you have. On the honey jar lid, quite possibly it could fit canning jars, commonly called ‘Mason’ or ‘Ball’ jars for preserving and jams.

I think the wood grain S/P shakers, along with the toothpick crate would be so cute in a backyard BBQ :)

The first one looked like it would make a nice plant pot once the handle was removed. I totaly agree on the tiny handle thing though.

The jug looks like a washing jug, that would come with a basin. Definitely seen these in various period dramas.

For the pitcher, it reminds me of some pieces that have really delicate but intricate floral designs on the more flat area and on the fluting and scroll parts just a sweeping line that follows the path of the design. I wish I could add a picture but is is a lovely piece

Teacup idea! I've seen people get a single cup and saucer from a thrift store, and glue the cup on its side to the saucer, and hang from the handle outside, putting birdseed in the cup/saucer so it looks like it spilled as a bird feeder! I can only imagine how cute it would be with your style of painting and maybe a little clay bee or butterfly attached!

I think the tea cup fits with the style of the jug quite well. Dainty tea cup handles are often held not by sticking your finger through

There is likely a basin (large bowl) that matches that pitcher. They were used for washing before inside plumbing. I’ve seen a dozen different styles. It’s a lovely one!

I believe you're not supposed to fit your fingers in that small handle. 😇 In Victorian times the handles were also that small and meant to be pinced between your fingers to be held, not fit your fingers through. 😉

I definitely prefer holding my teacups and touching all the crevices 😅 but maybe that’s just because I like appreciating all parts of the clay on my fingertips 💕

Your dress fabric is great inspo for the regency vase, birds and or bees with some greenery. This vase was super popular in the 1990s where I live, either alone or with a basin, and almost always had soft romantic antique roses as decor (not my taste).

My gut reaction to the pitcher:
Her: "I could make itnso dainty and elegant...:
Me: *no hesitation to fill in the pause* and *covered* in bee's.
