      I have the same white butter dish as you have. I happened across a round black knob in my junk drawer, drilled a hole in the center of the wood lid and screwed on the knob. It was a game changer, making it simple to take lid off/on and I love it so much more.

      I agree about having the style you already love…but I also think there’s another option. If you use a “make do” dish that you already have at home for when your “loved dish” needs washing, it will cause the washing to happen at a quicker turn around, make sense? Just a thought. Always love your videos!

      Get the pretty one you keep thinking about. Especially if it’s gonna be sitting out on you open shelves in between uses if you are swapping between 2 of them. Sometimes it’s just best to spend the money on exactly what you want instead of a “make due” item.

    Thank you Dawn for this lesson today! I too, think using cash is HUGE for children! When my granddaughter was little, I took her shopping, she had birthday money to spend. She found something she wanted, I asked her if she had enough money, she did. When we went to checkout, the cashier told her the total cost and my granddaughter started pulling out money, the cashier kept telling her "more". Finally, when she realized it was going to be almost all of her money, my granddaughter told the cashier, "NO I don't want it anymore!" and started grabbing all her dollars and putting them back in her purse. The cashier looked at me and couldn't believe I wouldn't go ahead and pay for the toy. I know that experience was hard, but my granddaughter is now 19 years old and she has continued to be careful shopper.

    I have the same butter dish that you do and I love it! When it's getting low I use a rubber spatula and scoop all of it out and then put the dish in the sink and run hot water into it to melt the butter on the edges. I hand wash it right away, dry it, put 2 new sticks of butter in it and then plop the old butter from the spatula on top. I do the same thing with just hand washing real quick, because of all of Dawn’s great encouragement. I actually use a candy dish type thing that a relative gave us when we got married. The dish will be washed by tomorrow and I can put the new stick in then. In the past I have used a rubbermaid container to hold us over until the other is washed. But if you still want to get a 2nd one..: i’d get the same one you already have 😁

  • @elemke6392
    @elemke6392 Рік тому +1

    I love the dish style butter dish but I’m going to go against the grain and say don’t buy another butter dish. We have a regular one and when it’s empty I will just sit out a stick of butter in the wrapper and I’ll wash the butter dish and put the butter back in. That also gives it time to warm up on the counter.
    Also, I know the struggle of almost never having soft enough butter for toast (born and raise in WI and live in a Chicago suburb now) but what we do is slice it really thin when the bread is toasting. Then when you put the slices on the toast it just melts right on it and makes it easy to spread.
    I love your channel and energy! I’m not a minimalist but I’ve gotten rid of a ton of stuff! Your videos motivate me to declutter and live a simpler life. Thanks for that!!

I saw a lovely tiny pair of sterling silver ones shaped like little planets. They were £30. I loved them, but I thought it was waaaaay to expensive compared to all the others. I was shocked! I left them in the store and when I went back to the car I googled them only to find the same store had an online sale and they were 60% off so I got them for £12.99! I was so happy ☺️ it pays to shop around.

Most of my kids are grown but I had a late comer to our family and she's now 11 and usually parents ease up or get tired as the youngest come up but not me. I witnessed the mistakes I made and will not do that twice! We thrift much of what we buy too and she doesn't really care, and if she does SHE pays for it with money she had to earn! We did this a lot with our other kids but I'm even more into it now. I refuse to even support some stores now. Keep up the good work!

    Love the “shopping day” idea. When my kids were little used to shop only during out of season sales & found good deals. After my kids wore I would share with my sister-in-law for her kids & she would pass it on to her friends. That was also the time when video games started becoming popular, only bought used console & games. Now that they are older they remember to follow almost all what we practiced at that stage. Dawn thank you for sharing. 😊

Our local one is smaller and "less busy" and we are able to play with the toys, very reasonably priced and it helps our local people too. A lot of time, the will play with toys, but not ask to buy them. Sometimes we just go to look for something to do on a Saturday morning. I often use the “I’ll leave it here and if I can’t get it out of my head I’ll come back and see if it’s still here” strategy. I’ve only ever gone back a few times. Once I saw a lamp in an antique store that was made out of a copper tea pot. It was $20 and I was living in a tiny home so I just didn’t have space for it. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and a year later we moved into a larger space and I assumed it was gone so I looked for something similar online and couldn’t find anything. Well 6 months after that I went back to the antique store and the lamp was still there! It’s my favorite decor item in my house by far! I can’t believe it sat there for a year and a half after I first saw it!

    Our sons are in their 40's now and this is what we did with their money. They each had a savings account and 1/2 of the cash they received went into it, then they could spend the other half or save it if they wanted. We talked about the money in savings and they had great ideas on what they would use it for when they were older, car, school, sporting goods, etc. Two saved for college and one for a car. We also gave them a budget to spend for school start and they became very creative on how to get the most for their money. All three are very responsible spenders today. Its very easy to spend with a card or cash, just figure out what works best for you, everyone is different. I am definitely not a minimalist but I have used your tips to get my house under control. Thanks for this video. When you said that your kids enjoy finding things at the thrift store, I could totally relate, as I have five kids. My husband and I are huge thrifters, and our kids have followed suit, even learning how to use their money wisely when things are already cheaper. They love thrifted clothes, whether I find them or they do, and they love finding books as well. Because we have chosen this way of living, our kids would rather go thrifting rather than a big box store. So, I think a lot has to do with how you instill values into your kids, including how we spend our money and what we bring into our home. It’s fun for me to even see my eldest daughter, who is 16, enjoy finding items herself, knowing it could help her with budgeting when she is on her own.

During the winter months and the time when it's too cool in the house for the butter to be soft, I whip my one stick of butter (1/4 pound) with 2 to 3 tablespoons of cooking oil and 4 to 6 tbsp of coconut oil. Guiding your children in how to manage money is one of the most valuable life lessons you can give them. Give them the advice and accept that the final decision lies with them. It is also good for them to see that you find it tempting to but manage to summon the strength to walk away.
    One of my proudest moments was when my 18 year old son, called me to the computer screen to show me his bank was offering him a £3,000 loan at just the click of a button. He was horrified they would do such a thing. “ I’m 18 and get £30 a week collage support, I wouldn’t lend me three thousand pounds “ needless to say he didn’t take the loan.

As Dawn has said, we are so bombarded with advertising, marketing, and for most easy access to borrowing money. I am certain it is harder for the youth of today to hang on to their hard earned cash. They defiantly need help and practice from as young as you can.
      Give a child money and let them spend or save. Once it’s spent that’s it, it’s gone, no more. Feeling the pain of having spent all your money at age six, seven, eight. This was unheard of during my growing up years. While visiting cousins In Arkansas a few years back, she had her butter out and it was so easy to spread on toast! And my butter dish is just a regular butter dish, not a deep bottom one.
