Ok so it seems I've conflated lead distance and gun velocity again. The Harrier GR.7 additional guns are HIGH VELOCITY (up to 1400m/s) but their positioning under the fuselage makes leading them a little more difficult than nose mounted guns. Apologies for the confusion and I will try not to make the mistake a third time.
hi spit flyer i was the a-5 at 11:42, i remember in the moment thinking you were a early harrier at 10.0 (why i tried to dogfight and turn instead of running away) until i realized i was totally screwed and was shocked to see it was you when i died. very fun fight i see you quite often in my games and im glad i finally made it into one of the videos
There is a basic rule when assuming enemy jets especially in Spit Flyer’s “How to Dogfight” video, always assume the version of the enemy jet you’re fighting is the best version.
Tip for the GR.7, I believe Ground Target belts get the high velocity rounds which travel a good deal faster (~1400m/s) and make the no tracers a bit more tolerable. EDIT: as has been pointed out the HVAP no longer have higher velocity and all belts sit at around 1100m/s, so this entire comment can be disregarded.
They do noticable less damage than the air target rounds though, which still have fantastic velocity especially for someone used to the ADEN 30's. You're likely to lose out on more kills because the rounds just hit without damaging anything.
I like the Gr.7, had a lot of kills with it.. and the amount of flares. You look like a Chinese Firework Sale, if you spam all of them at once. Plus, the Aim-9L behave now much better.
Your way of flying it, it's the polar opposite of what I do in it, and I'm pretty consistently getting 3/4 kills with it every game. Go straight from the runway till you're at about 600mph, then climb and 35° till about 5-6k, if not higher. The good thing about the flares, if an f14 does lock you, you can turn slightly to the left or right and periodically use them to make it lose lock. Then one you're over people fire from top down onto them with the missiles, and they rarely notice. Plus that have a better range of about 5k when doing so. Saying that, everyone's got their styles and yours seems to work.
@@zenitu6914 In an open game the same applies for any aircraft, hence you need to pick your fights and not just jump into the middle melee if you want to actually survive, however due to it's excellent TWR it can actually maintain it's speed surprisingly well in a sustained dogfight, and I believe it's the only jet currently in game that can retain nose authority indefinitely whilst in a full turn. It also regains speed faster than anything else in the disengage and can hold a climb with any other jet, even being able to accelerate in a vertical climb at low altitude. Add to that 700 flares and it's less vulnerable than pretty much any other aircraft at low speed. The only thing I've had any issues dogfighting is the mirage 2k due to its insane initial turn, but if you can survive that you can even rate fight the mirage.
Its funny how planes like these end up being more competitive in the current meta than planes like the f4e that have no pulse doppler or all aspects, even though it was super good in previous metas.
The 25mm guns actually have the same velocity as the M60 Vulcan, and have even higher velocity with the Ground betls. You don't need to lead your shots as much as your instincts tell you.
Thanks for the review, I currently only have a few mods and 2 x 9L's but it's still an enjoyable plane; I find getting altitude 4-6K after a bit of early low-level flight is a good way to get kills.
Thanks for the advice man just got it last night and I wasn’t doing to good I think I was trying to play it like a Jaguar to much I think this will really help thanks
You're more likely to be seen flying low when everyone looks DOWN for you while flying around and high outside of scan angles of whom looking down Also, your 9L are going to be more effective in a top-down approach because they'll lead soooo much that they wont "see" any flares trailed behind a jet ! But play as you want..
I wish ai were only bombers, I'm tired of seeing an attacker behind me on the map and I look expecting to fight something dangerous only to see a yak 38 below me
So they way I've been running it was mostly quick climb to 8-9000m get on top of the radars as they are flying toward my team. Then I look for the melee, and just dive in there launching my aim9L on top of them. Funny enought in a dive I do go supersonic with the harrier. Doing so I usually get 3-4 kill with the aim9 then I go full gun and try to engage the slower one. Also with that many flare I'm always going periodic flare, I can jsut let them go and forget about them for a while, and because harrier isnt using AB it make it basicly imune to IR missile
You have so many countermeasures that you can just turn on periodic deply every in a 2-1 squence and it will keep you safe from missiles 99% of the time.

Otherwise this thing eats those "OP" Tomcats for breakfast. Do i still want Tornado? Yes..But this will do for some time :D
the fact that you say that "you only have so many flares" kinda irks me, considering you literally have enough flares and chaff to counter every single one of the enemy teams missiles combined, with over 600 countermeasures....
Thrust vector to 30% and you can outdogfight f-14s and f5s it's beautiful, only plane other then the fg 1 I've got a positive k/d in got like 50 more kills then deaths and I go out with the mavericks every match and pop pillboxes first 🤯
Also quick bonus tip: unequip flares after you unlock the CM pods it only takes 60 flares off you but saves 1.2k in repair costs, nvds are the same once it's unlocked you can always use thermal even unequipped and it saves 500+ iirc
Not to mention you can sustain a climb with pretty much anything, and maintain nose authority in a stall. In a dogfight it's best move for the sharpest turn is bringing the nose over vertical using 100° vectoring. Nice tip on the flares, didn't realise you could still use the pods. To add to that, turn off NVD to save an additional 879sl, as they fixed it recently so you can still use the cameras thermals (which by the way can spot planes over 12km away), meaning all it adds is a green tint mode for the rare night battles (and currently you still get it in third person anyway). I'd even be tempted to remove the EFS, as I don't think I've died once from fire in over 100 games and hours of custom.

The velocity was nerfed to ~1100m/s as the 1400m/s would be for APFSDS rounds that the gun did not ever use.
Also they secretly lowered hunter f1/f6 br by 0.3, and revamped a lot or airplanes autonanons damage models, if you're interested
