    If your pet hesitates while going through the door and the flap closes before the tail is through, it can deglove the end of the pet's tail. That happened with my cat. So, I replaced the hard flap with a rubber one. Much safer.

    007 would be proud to have the shop tools you have. Hats off to you, my friend.

    Great job, I’ve had a dog door for my dogs for years of course the one I bought from the store originally and you have to replace the flap every year to 16 months as they always get a tear across the top, great idea to use a piece of aluminum, because it should never wear out. Now I just have to find a piece of aluminum and a few other accessories to get it working in the slot. Thanks

      That's why I made mine I got tired of replacing the plastic flap. Good luck with yours.

      go to home depot or lowes and grab a piece of 1/4" plexiglass and a glass cutter. my 3 dogs are destructive a$$holes and the plexi glass is 1 of 3 components of my custom dog door that they have not been able to break or render useless! im pretty sure its 1/4" thick, maybe 3/16. i have 3 germans all over 65 pounds and they are about as gentle as warthogs on the doggie door.

    You could do more given the metal frame and magnets, like a saloon-style double door that magnetically closes itself - if you get bored, and want to make something that works just fine unnecessarily complicated.

    Nice build. Would have liked to seen poochie coming through it.

    oh man i wish i had a welder! i have 3 large german dogs and these a$$holes destroy everything including a heavy duty custom doggie door! its a 3 flap system i made cause we live in cold maskachussetts and i wanted to minimize the large amount of cold air coming into their basement area. they blast through it anytime theres a freaking squirrel, rabbit , hawk , chicken , fly or breeeze outside and they have ripped the 1/2" thick screws out of the damn side of the house at least 5 times in 3 years. ive gone through countless cabinet magnets that secure the plexi flap to the outer 3/4 plywood flap. miracle that they have not ruined the plexi glass! today i am using 2x4 PT and building an entire new casing/frame on the outside of the existing nice white trim and will use freaking lag bolts to secure the hinges! if they manage to break this set up they will be living outside in one of my kids play houses LOL.

    Just one problem though, if for some reason the dog wants to reverse, half-way thru, gets stuck, panics, he might get hurt. So perhaps split the door and repeat the hinge in the middle of it.

    I saw mentioned before using a truck mud flap, those seem like they would be pretty solid and probably not warp too easy.

    Just what I need to do. I bought the petsmart door that has 3 flaps so it will be better insulated but my silly dog chewed it all up. So I need to build s doggy proph door.

    The door is aluminum? So what happens if he gets his tail stuck? Cuts it clean off? I’ll stick with plastics

    • @MintChip421

      My dog chews plastic and my dogs don’t have tails, this is perfect for me but good thinking

    • @rotfan77
      @rotfan77 3 роки тому

      I’m pretty sure it doesn’t close that tightly, if the dog did get it’s tail caught and they pulled it would come right out, And when I say come right out I mean the tail will come right out of the door. If you look you can easily push the aluminum door it’s not like a 50 pound steel safe door or something.

    Good idea but I think it would be better to use some rigid plastic material

    • @SoatMon
      @SoatMon  4 роки тому

      That's not a bad idea. A mud flap would work well also and not be a problem if they got their tail caught.
