Man a couple hired me to build a sturdy dog door for their two Great Pyrenees funny enough. I'm basically trying to follow your model only make it pretty lol. Thanks for posting this because before I took the job I was like oh yeah no big deal. And then I was like oh s*** this is a pretty complex thing
The outer part of the door needs to be metal. And if they are new to dog doors only put one in until they get good at using it. Then do the double setup.
How appropriate that I went out looking for a sturdy DIY dog door, and find a video made by a neighbor, who also deals with the high winds of eastern Colorado! Looking at the Ponderosas and grassland outside tells me you might be a very close neighbor, FARM DUDE! Thankfully, we haven't seen 50 below zero near Elizabeth lately!
Thank you for making this video!!!! I have been trying to figure out how to make something like this. I have tried using carpets and rubber and they all have failed pretty quickly. I could not understand how to get the two-way hinge system to work. This is a fabulous idea and I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video!
Thanks for the comment. So far it’s holding up pretty good. The magnet system has worked its way apart so the next one will have the magnets with a hole in the middle that screw into the wood.
Nice,Design i am also living in an area with snow and was thinking about a solution, but just found the flaps on amazon,i will also build a wood frame, thanks for the inspiration.😊
That is a nice setup! Well done. You might consider a patent (not joking at all)! You could also spice it up with an RFID sensor and controlled magnets.
I’ll tell ya that the outside wood parts broke so I would advise building them out of lightweight metal or aluminum. I’m doing a few big projects at the moment. New videos coming asap.
Cute puppy. I'm trying to find a good one for my paralyzed pig. She lives in a rubbermaid bldg which is inside a barn. She has heat lamps. I like her to be able to come inand out as she wants so she can walk around barn. She has a traditional xl dog door from home depot which she has used for 9 years. She does not like the flap blocking her view. She wants to see what she is walking into. So it always takes her a minut3 of headbutting the flap. I am not good with building things so I'm browsing around.
If there a video on the buildup? we just lost our 150 lb Great pyrenees Bolt, but now we have Nyla a 90 lb female.. Those Petcare doors arent that durable in our climates!!! ( way to go dog door engineers!!!))would love to know the dimensions and see the fab!!! Great idea!!
Hay FarmDude. Same situation with my PetSafe door is failing and I want to make something like what you got. Do you have a list of the parts you used to make it?
My pet safe door only made 3 months, first cold day(-36) it was done. The outside flap shattered like a crossword puzzle, plus the frame shattered that the flap was mounted to.
Hi Farm Dude! I live up in northern colorado😅 we get raging winds too! I’m not too handy but need to build a dog door similar to ur design. Would u be able to share the plans for ur door?
It’s a pretty handy one. I think I’m going to make a few changes to it here in about a month. However I don’t really have any legitimate plans. Because every dog is a different size and you want to make sure your dog will fit through the smaller door before anything.
Greta idea. Maybe beads of silicone on each side, around the edges, and once dried, put back together , so each piece would have 2 tracks of silicone to fill any gaps of drafts, but allow doors to still move freely?
There is no need for flaps on inside and outside. One door is all you need. The key is making that one dog door air tight. Plywood? If you have more than one dog, that is a collision/disaster waiting to happen. Here is a link to the video you tried to improve on. This video has step by step instructions on how to build. ua-cam.com/video/hjzbGHcqbdc/v-deo.html
Great idea. The best advice I got was to block the wind. Changed my life.
This is awesome.. we live in Alberta and between the Cold and the wind… this is wicked.. going to build it now!!

when you opened that door and the snowstorm was outside... i finally realized why we have different building codes everywhere.
You are absolutely right
The flaps suck! Thanks so much for sharing, I’ve been looking for diy solutions like this, cool design!
Thanks. It is kinda noisy with all the doors.

Great job. I’d like to see if you updated it and like it.

Dog doors save so much time. Good luck let me know how it goes.
This is an amazing idea, thank you for sharing
Looks awesome, I'm going to build one. Thanks for sharing!
My dog loves mine. Be sure to round the edges. Or sand em down good. Just encase a foot gets stuck.
@@farmdude suppose that could happen. Thanks for the advice
That is a nice setup! Well done. You might consider a patent (not joking at all)! You could also spice it up with an RFID sensor and controlled magnets.
Absolutely. I’ll make a another one after about a year of trouble shooting this concept. I like your idea of a sensor controlling the magnets.
@FARM DUDE I've got a bit of experience with sensors and microcontrollers. Let me know if you'd like to collaborate!
Hey! This is exactly what im looking for. Did you ever make the plan by chance? 😩
No I did just redo it. The wood square part broke. I should have a video coming shortly explaining what happened.
Hi! Thanks for sharing this. Any updates on how well it’s worked the past year? Looking to build something like this for my foster dogs 😊
I’ll tell ya that the outside wood parts broke so I would advise building them out of lightweight metal or aluminum. I’m doing a few big projects at the moment. New videos coming asap.
Nice door. Any updates? Plans? Links?

Your poor pig, I would not advise system like I have made for a pig. Their lakes are so short that they could get hung up on the swinging door

That's a great idea! I'm doing it on my house, thank you!
It works pretty good. I’m going to be revising it again. One of the boards broke and the magnets keep popping out. But the wind doesn’t get in.
What do you call those double swing hinges? Where did you find them? Thanks for the video!
I made them out of a piano hinge
Oh wait, that's the name of a kind of hinge! Ha! Just looked it up. Thanks.@@farmdude
You better patent that!
Its been over a year that you posted this wind proof dog door. Did you make a video on how to make this yet?
Dude this is perfect
It’s really easy to make. Just be sure the inner door is big enough.
Hay FarmDude. Same situation with my PetSafe door is failing and I want to make something like what you got. Do you have a list of the parts you used to make it?
A couple piano hinges and some old pallets with a 1/4 piece sheet of plywood.
Excuse me Sir, we need an update on this with building plans. Even if it's not a finished product.
My pet safe door only made 3 months, first cold day(-36) it was done. The outside flap shattered like a crossword puzzle, plus the frame shattered that the flap was mounted to.
Sounds like one of the few I went through.

That’s a good idea. The wood has started to warp from the weather. I’d definitely advise painting them.
Your hand pressure to open the door is much less than 40 to 50 MPH wind. I'm playing the BS card here. Still a great idea!!
Any follow up on this? How has the dog door held up?
Well so far one of the outer flaps developed a crack and broke. So I would advise using thicker outer squares. But all in all it’s been pretty good.
@@farmdude Thanks!
So...how's the final product looking?
Well I think I should have done some painting or maybe some weather sealer on the wood. That’s for sure.
How about a how-to video? I realize that one would have to taylor the size to their pet, but just the basics would be good.
Yea I’ll have one coming up sometime. There are a few other videos in line first. But it’s in the lineup
What hinges did you use?
Piano hinges.
How’s it working now?
Well the outer frame broke. But it’s still kinda functional.
Do u make these for people?
No, but I should.
That's badass
Dog doors are a must. I just don’t like how they let the cold in.
How does a dog's tail feel?
Well old Sam’s tail is still straight. But I do see where your coming from. The 2 flaps could make a pinch point.
Brilliant

Would like step by step on how to make
Damn i pay a lot for cat doors, for dogs are more expensive and mine dogs destroy everything. I copy your idea
Let me know how it turns out
