So , little old grandma here. Got an 80 series Landcruiser 4 weeks ago. Newbie at all this 4x4 stuff. Changed the starter motor a couple of weeks ago. Soooo easy. Recondition the original one and keep it as spare. That V8 is terrifying.
The starter location inside the engine valley and the Alternator at the bottom of the motor was two factors that influenced my decision to get a 2.8 Troop carrier
Did almost the same job on my 76, bar the replacing of the starter motor, a few weeks back. Soooo many pipes and stuff needs to come out to get the inatkes off for a clean. A tip, and just for a second, a old dishwasher makes a great parts washer. They are cheap to pickup second hand and 65-70C temps and some dishwasher soap do a excellent job cleaning off grease and grime.
You disassemble with the little rattle gun. Then to reassemble you switch to the drill with the adjustable clutch. Basically an automated toque wrench.
Best bet is to go to Toyota. I threw out the packaging so can't give part numbers unfortunately. But use genuine and a torque wrench. Do it right do it once and all that crap
I learned long ago it was far easier to take the extra twenty minutes to remove the bullbar and take the front wheels completely off and sit it on the disc rotors when doing major engine surgery on a lifted 4x4.
Yeah this was the original plan but I opted not to for the sake of coolant retention. But we all saw how that turned out 🥺 it was all held in until the EGR was removed, then the air got sucked in and the coolant went everywhere
Toyota states 5x reuse provided you torque them correctly. Do not overtighten them. As for moving the fart inhaler, it's plumbed into the cooling system, so I left it for simplicity. The only reason to remove it would be saving a couple of kg, so would be a bit pointless.
I've ordered a new 2.8L 79, should be arriving in a couple of months. Couldn't believe how good the little 2.8 drove, way better than my Troopy V8. Hopefully it'll last a couple of hundred thousand KMs, and after that I don't care because I'll probably be dead!
I'd probably be most keen to see a comparison between an auto converted V8 vs a 2.8. or manual vs manual. Although it does sound like an impressive engine so far, hopefully there isn't a catch.
hahaha have fun with that! i not long ago did my 76 series starter and helped a mate with hes 200 as well. not fun! make sure ya cut some of that foamy shit away so the water actually has a chance to drain away. bloody toyota 🙄
Another good reason to avoid these vehicles. What a joke of engineering, plus the bonus alternator placement, then there's the narrow rear dif and the 1970s interior and leaf springs etc etc. But they are so tough, aren't they?
I've had this car for about 100,000km and this is the only issue it's ever had. It took a while, sure, but any V8 by nature will have either the starter or the alternator in there by design.
Haven't used 'ugga dugga' since high school lol. Such a good slang word.
Hahaha, I completely accept your footwear for the pressure washer, love it.
im a 1st year auto electrician, ive just done one of these on an ex mine spec 79. im getting joy out of watching other people suffer doing it
If you used ugga duggas on the reassembly. You're fired
Top video as always Matt & full of laughs
See you in the next one 👍

It's not so bad since you can combine it with general maintenance like an intake clean

Better than the other way around I guess. At least bump start is an option with an easy alternator swap
@@ridiculousthings4x4 I like the starter motor where I can hit it with a big hammer if needed has saved me walking in the past
I don't own a VDJ, I don't plan on owning one any time soon but found this video entertaining.
Patience is a virtue!!

This. But why buy an old one when you have one at home? The whining only happens if you're found out
1:36 hAhaha

I like how this guy can change a vdj starter motor in 10 minutes, but toyota wants a days labour....
You know that scene in the matrix where Trinity gets shot and neo enables noclip mode to get it out? Yep...
Hey man what are the seals called that need replacing please, starter motor has just gone on my 79

Awesome video thanks 😂❤️
Have dreaded the day my starter fails in my 76 but now I feel better (maybe) because I'll pay someone else to replace it.
Thanks

Makes changing a fuel filter on a Jeep look simple.
How many times during this process did you contemplate taste testing 3phase?
All of the times. Especially my spine and inverted knees
Any drama's with re-using the injection lines?
Thoughts on mystery plates in controversial pipes versus removing the cooler entirely?

Good video
Bare foot pressure washing, living on the wild side 😊
Toenails grow back
It would've been good if you explained and described what you were doing.
Generally I'd say if someone needs more help than I'm showing, they should take a step back
I want the video now goddamnit!
I distinctly noticed the blanking of the blanking..........
You must be mistaken, sir.
Pls bully more UA-camrs ❤
Open to suggestions
It's gunna be a bit easier with the new 2.8L...
That'll rile up the fan boys 😂

The design of the VDJ is a ridiculous thing.
If the shoe fits

I thought I was the only one with 70 series Land Cruiser and a TJ Jeep. difference being I luv my little Jeep
You know what would be cooler? Swapping your 70 series for my jeep 😏
Wow what fun

How much would this cost if you had a good mechanic do it ? 😢
Does such a thing exist?
@@ridiculousthings4x4yes cost does exist
Wait, what!! You hang shit on jeeps all the time for being poorly engineered and you have to do what to change a starter on a Toyota? Maaaate 😂😂
A once in 250k item vs general service items is a very different comparison. Jeeps still suck 😏
