I had to live at 29 Palms (29 Stumps) back in the day, and Palm Desert / Palm Springs used to be my hang-out! Familiar with roads I watched on your video! If you were a former Marine…29 Stumps was a treat for the grunts to train in the heat! I don't miss it 3/7, 0311.

Thanks for the great video. I am a former owner of a 2010 Goldwing. It was a great motorcycle, but with all the advancements being made in the industry at that time, Honda was behind the curve. In 2013 I bought the BMW K1600 GTL. I owned the GTL for nine years with minimal service costs. The storage was superior to the wing and could be fully utilized. The GPS was better than the wings especially when programming for a trip. With Bluetooth, XM radio, abs standard, traction control, electric windscreen, etc. The $23.999 price tag in 2013 was awesome compared to my abs wing of nearly $29,000 in 2010. It would take Honda years to catch up while they only came out with new paint schemes instead of what customers were asking for. When the new wing finally came out, it had less storage, making it necessary to have to lock your helmet from the handlebars. It lacked the robustness of previous models. Many current and former wing riders consider the new wing a shadow of its former self. For me, it was far too little, and far too late!

Thank you for putting up with that heat for this report. I drove from So. California I-10 last Labor Day to visit my daughter in Brooklyn and well sympathize with you about the heat. I didn't really begin to enjoy the ride till I got to about St. Louis because of the heat. My 2012 K1600GS was flawless.
That box in the back will hold two full size helmets
I never saw you move the wing deflectors for more air.. They don't always help that much, but many times I am glad they are on the bike. If you don't know about the wing deflectors you are missing out.
I usually got between 42 - 45m.p.g. Twice in Colorado I got 50+ m.p.g. while on slower secondary roads with construction so I had to go slower.
In Manhatten and Brooklyn my bike was like a tank compared to the much smaller bikes they were using in that congested area.
As big as that bike is I have frequently 'white lined' or split lanes in heavy So. Cal traffic. I don't go fast splitting lanes generally and each driver gets a wave of thanks for me for sharing the lane.
    Safe travels to you.

Great to hear Hog. A very different animal. I am considering a 22 GSA. Going to test ride one this weekend. It definitely fits the Swiss Army knife description. Does many things very well and it’s got unique looks sitting amongst all the other touring rigs. I like to be different. Ride safe and often.

@@roadglide LOL you are all over UA-cam! I have a 22 GSA with factory low suspension - it is a great bike so far. Very different from my RGL, and I don't worry about it getting dirty or throwing my jacket and helmet on top of the bags (excuse me - PANNIERS lol). I now have 2 completely different bikes for different types of riding - I am a happy camper. Which BTW, I can do on the GSA with ease! Good luck with the test rides - while you are at it, ride a 1250RT too - they are sleek and sexy. And the 1250 engine is no slouch on either frame 👍

For me the FJR1300 was my best ever cruiser. Travelled all over Europe, wonderful bike. Zero problems. The K1600 is simply soooooo big and heavy I think, fine for USA freeways but too much for our roads and car parks. The Wing too. Great vids thanks!

    "Behemoth of a bike!"
    Respectfully a 2021 Goldwing is +- 800lbs, 2021 Gtl is 789 wet.

Fellow Texan here ( just West of DFW) and I have had a used 2018 K1600B Bagger for a little over 2 months now and really love it ! I have a bad back and bad arthritis and this bike makes it easy for me to burn 200-300 miles a day no problem. I can set it on "cruise" in the suspension settings and it just floats like an old Cadillac ! My buddy went from a 2019 CVO Street Glide to a 2022 Matte black Goldwing then after riding my bike bought a 2022 K1600GA Grand America. The only thing he liked about the Goldwing better was the stereo sound quality and the "notchiness" of the BMW's transmission if you try to shift using the quick shifter under 3000rpm shifts. I got him to just use the clutch at low RPM shifts when you want to just cruise and short shift this torque monster. Look forward to more vids !

Enjoyed the video. Really looking forward to your thoughts on comparing the two bikes. I was in the market for a Goldwing last year but ended up on a K1600 GTL primarily for one reason...price. I seldom buy new motorcycles but look for very lightly used ones of which there are usually plenty out there. I picked up a one owner K1600 GTL with 6000 miles for $9500. It had just been serviced and had new tires. It had a lot of aftermarket accessories and complete service history. A similar used Goldwing would have been close to twice that. So far I've put about 11,000 trouble free miles on it. I'm not sure why the used market is so soft on the K1600 but I think they're a bargain for anyone in the market for a touring bike. I know BMW service is expensive but I do most of my own maintenance. Keep the videos coming, very enjoyable!

The only advantage BMW has is more power and a tiny bit better handling. Goldwing has the upper hand in so many ways. Including… Reliability, 87 octane gas, no specialty tools or software, cheaper labor rates and not over engineered with plastic parts designed to fail. Heck if I had lots of expendable income I would probably add a BMW to my collection 😁

I'm a beemer guy who rides (and loves) a '19 R1250RT. I've often bounced between checking out a new 'Wing and the K1600 GTL as a next motorcycle, since I tend to lay down the highway miles. I REALLY liked test riding the GTL (BMW is very generous with their test rides, Honda, not so much). So I'm eager to hear from you as to your impressions from a die-hard Wing-rider of the GTL.

I was on the same position, purchased the BMW K1600GTL 2022, nice bike, but the seat is REALLY bad, so consider spending 900 Dollars for a replacement and make sure the K1600GTL does not have a engine know sound...many 2022 out there have this issue.
I also did not get the Wing because I couldn't get one to test ride...

I recently did a 1000+ mile road trip on a rented GTL through California with my wife. We did not like it. Tall, top heavy, and hard to come at a stop. The one we had did not have reverse nor a rider backrest. Fully loaded and two up it’s just way too top heavy. My wife complained the whole time that we should have rented a goldwing. She was really up high and had bad head buffeting. Just my perspective. Glad you are doing this

Had a 2018 K1600 Grand America. Performance, handling and features were great! I have a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT now and miss the power and performance greatly! However, the short/expensive tire life, ridiculous maintenance costs and top heavy feel are happily left behind! The DCT Tour is a totally different bike. It's like comparing a Honda Accord and the BMW 5 series. They'll both get you there, but will give you very different driving experiences. And, very different ownership experiences. Additionally, 3-4 years down the road, the Wing will have retained a far greater % of it's value.

I'm in the market for '18+ GW DCT but my dads neighbor has a 22 K1600 GTL and its made me consider it, but he does all his own maintenance and hates the dealership so much that even under warranty he does it all himself (valve check included). I think your comment is the best summarization I've seen

It took me a year to decide if I was buying a GL or a K1600. After analyzing and reviews the 2 bikes are Road kings but everybody in the end makes the GL a winner but, never buy much. To me, the K1600 as a much more sportier look than of the GL but Honda will never fail you and live for ever.

Many of us bought our 2018+ Goldwing’s coming from a different brand, myself included. (I had a BMW K1200LT prior). I fully appreciate your riding strategy in the heat from Palm Desert to Tempe! Anything over 96°F it's important to avoid heat stroke and stay cool so I use a cooling vest and neck cooler. Did you have anything beside warm water for the heat?

I'm really looking forward to the review of the BMW. Having owned two, a GS and a GSA one primary consideration for me was the cost of ownership of the BMW's. Living in rural southeastern Utah nothing is really very close, especially when it comes to a BMW dealer. 300 miles to the closest dealer, and any work you have done is quite pricey because of what it is. Honda on the other hand has a much larger dealer network, so even though the BMW, may be the ultimate riding machine, I can say that I am very happy with my 2019 DCT, and especially a Honda dealer that is only 20 miles away!

WOW, just think of all the fun you could have making repair videos for the K16!
I had put a deposit down on a '22 Wing last year and have been waiting. I was originally thinking of an Africa Twin but had owned Wings in the past so figured I'd go with that. With the lack of availability of the Wing (none have arrived here), I started looking around and thought I may like a BMW R1250GSA.
In doing my research on the BMW, it appears to be technologically superior to the Wing in a lot of ways including lighting, suspension, braking and overall electronics with the Wing only having Carplay as an option that the BMW doesn't have.
I just had a test ride of the GS and have to say it was very pleasurable. Nice enough that I had my Goldwing deposit refunded and put a deposit down on a GSA. I opted for the GSA as it has better wind management than the GS and I did notice a bit of wind action during my test ride. Although the GSA is a taller bike, they have a lowered GSA which I'll try. NOTE, they have one available - that's a step up on Honda.
So my summary is that, for me, the GSA is technologically superior, is less expensive to purchase and is available. Oh and I've owned the predecessor to what you are riding back 20 years ago or so! :)

    • @roadglide
      @roadglide 2 роки тому

Congrats on the GSA! Love the character and unique look. A super do-it-all pretty good motorcycle. Sometimes called the Swiss Army knife of bikes. In any event. You didn’t mentioned if you test rode the new generation Wing. With DCT transmission and backlit handlebar switches for night riding, 4 ride modes with the “Sport” mode making the Wing an absolute Hooligan like you may never have experienced. The GSA does have great engine performance numbers, no question, and the panniers can be purchased in a variety of sizes in either hard or soft versions. So storage is excellent. Ride safe and often.

@@roadglide Nope, didn't get a chance to ride a new Wing with DCT. The one I had on order was an Airbag model so I was opting for the DCT figuring I'd like it. But, they are just not available where I am. In fact I had a deposit on a new Wing since last November but the local dealer couldn't give me any kind of idea when they may get any in. I figured I wanted to ride this year so went for the GSA.

@@jela8815 IF you were familiar with Cruiseman you'd know that he makes repair / how to videos for the Goldwing. Shows you how to do stuff. It'd be great if that were available for the K1600 and other bikes. He shows shortcuts, how not to break off plastic tabs, how to do simple things. Sure, a number of these are available but all from different sources.
Again, if you were familiar with Cruisman's videos you'd know my comments have nothing to do with being close minded although it sounds like you are. I've ridden and owned pretty much all the major brands of motorcycles and I've taught beginner and advanced motorcycle courses. Can you say the same?

I have the K1600 for on-road sports touring. I also have a BMW GS Adventure for touring mixed on-road and off-road, as well as a Ninja ZX14r for ripping the twisties. I adore the Goldwing. However, I choose the K1600 because the lean angle is much better with the BMW so it’s faster in the twisties, and also has more horsepower and feels a lot faster. I think the Goldwing is more comfortable overall, but I few; like I’m giving up very little when I arrive at the twisties compared to the Goldwing. Choosing between the two is a very nice problem to have.

    Thank you for the video.
I purchased my 2022 K1600GTL 2 weeks ago, and I am already without my bike at 385 miles on the clock as there is a very loud engine knock sound, that is affecting the safety of the ride as it vibrates the handlebar.
After several call to the BMW dealer, finally they decided to take the bike away to check it...it has been a week now and I just heard today that they are opening the top of the engine to check on the valves as it seem that the horrible noise is from the valves being loose!
NOT GOOD...kinda regretted not buying a 2022 Gold Wing which I was aiming for.

Originally, I was going to ride my Wing, but began reconsidering my mode of transportation due to the length of my two week journey in that stifling heat. Watching this video cinched by decision. I am going to drive instead. Be careful out there.

I think the bottom line is, would you buy it or not, I mean money being no object with a BMW GTL and the GL1800 in the garage.

@@cruisemansgarage I’ve tried them all. I really don’t think you can beat the Kriega (I use a 3l). They’ve thought of everything so it’s the most durable, most comfortable, has the easiest to manage/clean/connect components and it’s built like it was designed for a 10 year use period at least. I had numerous packs and stopped using them all and standardized on Kriega after I got the first one. Worth checking out. Even the one I have that goes into my Rev’It Cayenne 2 jacket is 3.5l. For really long rides, I have a 3l hydration pack as a secondary, an in jacket system (if using the Cayenne 2 in summer, a Desert Fox 4l flexible cell for filling up, and a Mosko tank bag with 2l. Never need to stop for water. However, if I get stranded, I have a push filter.

I had the experience to own when it came out, 18 Grand America. Nothing but problems once I reached 12k on her. So …so much can go wrong, just crazy. I had enough. Dealer always far away cause not many around. Wait time for repair or warranty work is forever. My K1600 did not like too hot or too cold temps. Speed was limited and no wonder why, high speed and dirty air do not like each other between or behind large trucks. I did got tired of it and sold it. That is why I have the 20 GW Tour DCT. Compare to the K, you just can’t. I am at 10k on the Honda, never ever even one tiny issue….period, done! The ride is so insanely comfortable. I would rent the K and not own one.

I've owned a number of BMWs including among others the K1600GTL, R1200GSA, and the R1250RT (currently). I have a deposit paid on an incoming '22 GW Tour. I'd be very interested in your thoughts on handling at highway speeds, especially in windy conditions or around traffic. I traded my GTL early to go back to an RT, primarily because it never handled as well on the highway. My wife & I both loved the comfort of the GTL for riders and she misses it relative to the RT. I had the GTL checked several times and changed tires, but nothing would make it as stable at 60 mph+. Went back to an RT and it is as solid as a rock on the highway. I watched a video done in a UK winter with two riders on a K1600 and a Goldwing, and anytime the video was from the 1600 I saw that familiar buffeting in the wind vs. the stable Goldwind in the same conditions. VERY curious if you have a similar experience.
