  • We got a close-up look at the biggest upgrade to Seattle's iconic Space Needle since it opened in 1962. The renovations started last September, and 150 construction workers have been working 20 hours a day, six days a week, to give the structure some new vertigo-inducing features. "CBS Sunday Morning's" Lee Cowan got a tour at the top of the site before its re-opening.

I'll do your job for you CBS. In 1961 a $5 million project would cost $41 million in today's inflation-adjusted amount. But that accurate comparison isn't as flashy is it?

If it was built today from scratch, I can't even see it being constructed for $41 million. That would probably only get a mega-stripped down version. $41 million might get you a 605 foot television transmission tower these days, not a whole space needle. Construction costs for all the things one would want in a space needle, have skyrocketed, much more than average inflation (that the government under-reports). $41 million can't even buy you a decent house in Beverly Hills. :)

Moist Girth I went on the space needle for my 5th grade field trip and it was really awesome. It was not really scary, just on the elevator because there is a huge window where you can see everything as you are going up. Once you are up there, you wont be that scared, it will just be a normal feeling.

Moist Girth, i went to Seattle in April and didn't go up the needle, just took pix from the ground, I didn't think it was all that much, they were still doing renovations. But let me tell you, I went back last week and decided to go up. It was really amazing! The glass panels around 360° view of the city was nice! I'd recommend it. I'm also afraid of heights, but you have to get on one of the benches, lean against the glass and take a picture!

His original hand drawn drafts? I love how he’s standing there, “just looking up, I remember creating those.” Gosh that’s so cool! Makes me think of my father, we’ll drive around town and he’ll point at all sorts of buildings and parks that he’s done electrical work in or for. Entire buildings like the brand new trampoline park in town. Making something is so exciting. Being apart of something like this is really special.

I've thought about that more than once where it relates to my dad's career as a developer in SoCal and seeing all of his plans that came to fruition and are still occupied, lived in, and enjoyed three generations later -- including the spec house he built for us in Long Beach. Still standing and still stands out for its exterior architecture. And he's still alive to look back and say yeah, I made that.

$5,000,000?... Umm that was $5M in 1961. So it's incomparable to $100,000,000 in 2018. $5M in 1961 adjusted for inflation is $42M today.

I was in Bellingham, Washington last week and met a couple of people in their 80's that looked 60. I think people might just be a bit happier and healthier here letting them be healthier longer perhaps. Aging also happens rapidly once your body quits working or accidents happen. The difference between someone looking 75 or 80 is often just a matter of sickness and injury/bed rest.

In 1961 it cost $5,000,000 and we are then led to believe that the upgrades will cost an order of magnitude more. But 5 million in 1961 is equivalent to 41 million today, so 100 million is just doubling the cost. Not as ridiculous I’d say, considering architects have had 50 years to figure out ways to build more profit into their costs.

Not anymore. The opioid and homeless epidemic are totally out of control. The disintegrating streets are getting worse too. Hope a new more moderate council gets voted in later this year.

I'm with John Dickerson. It's unnerving to be sitting at dinner in such a "precarious" situation high above the ground. I have a feeling that in the future they will cover areas of that restaurant area with a carpet (that you cannot see through). By customer request.

Regardless of which side's politics you're siding with, and whether or not you enjoy free views or being a tourist, I will say that the updates are interesting if not fascinating. The time before last that I went up there was when the restaurant was still there. I was a kid then. This more recent time that I went up, I went to see the sunset. Just barely missed it but the tail end of it was still beautiful. What was interesting however, were the nighttime views. On both upper and lower floors, you can either look out towards the dark abyss of the water in the west or to the east, the glittering cityscape. However, when you're looking through the glass floor in the middle of the night, the scene looks like something out of an old DARK sci-fi film. The spotlights are so bright that all you can see are the foundations and the "legs" of the structure, while your peripheral vision is totally drowned out by the visual stimulation of what's front and center. It's like seeing something cut from Blade Runner, or a Stanley Kubrick film, perhaps something in the vein of Alien. You're looking down the side of some mid-sized spacecraft, maybe some sort of equivalent to our current-day airliners, or perhaps only a lounge section of a bigger ship. The glare shines off of the support legs and their crossbeams lower down, and behind it are the fainter lights of the park below; glowing beacons, and lights from windows on the hull... and it's all slowly rotating. Your mind just wanders and you feel like you're in some other universe with someone else's memories. My advice would be, regardless of whether or not you're a local or a tourist, to go on a fairly clear evening and just take in the view. It really is something else. I ran into some guy up there who even admitted to skipping out on work early so he could see the sunset and get in some night views.

I see your evening view and I will raise you one. Walk across the Aurora Bridge at sunset on a nice evening.

Seattle is one of only two cities in the world known for its tower: the other obviously is Paris. The Space Needle is one of the greatest structures ever made!

It's nice to see the Space Needle get a face lift, but honestly I hate to see what the new ticket prices are going to be. I lived in Renton from 1996 to 2004. I use to go up to the Space Needle with my family all the time because it was cheap and we all loved walking around the Seattle Center. I came back to Seattle in 2011 and everything was priced so much more expensive. It's like Seattle doesn't want any one there but rich people living in or visiting the city.

My dad was an ironworker on the original building project putting in the sash and windows. So the Needle is like a younger sibling... Only much taller than the rest of the kids.

I don't know if I could stomach eating at the rotating restaurant with a view 300 ft. down. I might lose my meal. I've been to the Space Needle just recently and the new glass panels actually tilt outward so if you lean on them, it feels like you're about to fall over. But the view is still amazing. Love this city!

Misha Melissa The restaurant is actually about 500 feet high. So no need to feel uneasy about looking 300 feet down.

janosKern I’ve actually eaten up there with my family but it was cloudy and gray. We went in November. What I was saying is if they added the glass panels on the floor and you look down as you’re eating would make me a little queasy.
