The really fun part of this is that the government demands the old, romantic, nostalgic and scenic roads to be upheld so people can choose if they want to go fast, or enjoy the scenery and culture along the coast.
Thank god for this. The majority of the "tourist" roads are in great shape. You dont have to go near a major route if you dont want to. Though sometimes there is only on option, but you still have the scenery most of the time anyway.

Many years ago, I rented a car and drove it from Oslo to Trondheim, I wanted to see what Norway was like after skiing at Oslo, and I did! I'd love to drive their new super Coastal Highway but probably never will. What a beautiful country Norway is, and the people are just as beautiful as their country! Back then, as I stopped at a little store or some interesting spot along the way, the older people didn't speak English so they'd call their children to talk to me, because they did! I enjoyed every minute of that trip, about 50 years ago!

Where I'm at, our former Mayor's neglected (some extreme, some minimal) our roads for the past 50 years. Our current Mayor, and God Bless her for this, has put an emphasis on our city roads, trying to make up for that. Since this has happened, more jobs have been created and better roads have been made for a lot better local economy. People have realizing this, and during this COVID-19 crisis, our people keep on voting yes for road bonds because they've seen the results. Last 10 years has been growing pains for construction, but instead of being 50 years behind, we're now more like 10 years behind. So worth the cost!

My personal opinion as a norwegian myself, is that the norwegian people are not as nice as people think, we treat tourist with alot of respect, but treat our own people like shit, people dont talk to each other, everyone is alcoholics and are obsessed with their phone. There are few good people but they are few in comparison. We are truly brainwashed to some point, but im happy tourist looks at us as good people
smokedupgaming You paint a picture of Norway and Norwegians I just can't get behind. "Everyone is alcoholics"? Where do you live? That's just not true. I'll give you the phone, you are right about that one, but that is true for the whole western world! And just for the record, I'm from Norway a town called Rjukan Stalin1909 Glad you liked it here and welcome back!
Sounds like one of those projects that will end up having multiple unexpected costs and extra needed years, each of them being almost as big as the initial budget, in this case resulting in over 200+ billion in total costs and like 15 extra years to finish it, give or take.
Heh believe me, they might finish in time but they sure as hell go over the budget. There are too many unpredictables in these unique, mega projects that even the most sound design and management may not cover all possibilities. The numbers are just that, numbers. You have to pray to the engineering gods for the rest.
On Statens vegvesen website (Norwegian Public Road Administration) you can follow the status of all the projects (click interaktive kart): www.vegvesen.no/vegprosjekter/ferjefriE39/delprosjekt/fjordkryssing Some of the crossings are already completed, some under construction and some under design
The great thing about this project is that you don’t need to complete all the stages for it to greatly improve the E39. There will continue to be a ferry across Sognefjorden for a long time, but that doesn’t mean that most of the other crossings can’t get a fixed link. That said, it will be decades until the link from Stavanger to Bergen is finished, and that has the highest priority.
@Iam Notafan You'd be more likely to die outside the tube than inside the tube, so your worries are futile. There's less to distract you while in a tube than there is on the open road, so less chance of crashing. They're also obviously going to make it water tight in the parts exposed to water, so you won't drown. It's deep under stone, which has been pressed solid by the pressure at that depth, and the tectonics that created those ridges in the first place, so the rock won't give way and collapse. And finally, it's a reinforced concrete tube, and it'd be meters thick. In theory, it's better than normal highways in every way.
In Canada (at least in Toronto), all drivers drive on the leftmost lane regardless if they are passing or not. This leads to a weird situation where the rightmost lane is faster than the leftmost and you would use the right lane to pass.
Many people point out that investing 47 Billion $ in Highways is a waste of money esp. for a country with merely 5.3 million inhabitants and only medium to small sized cities (small population density) . I would like to offer another view on the subject: 1) Norway is self reliant on funding these projects (no foreign loans, no debt money) - Thanks to Oil 2) They surely know that eventually their oil will run out in the future. So they are investing in a way that could benefit their economy by diversifying their resources and strengthening the connections of their major cities.- Trade and Commerce Needs Roads. 3) Because of Climate Change and Sea Ice Melting, the Arctic Sea Route Between Asia and Europe will increasingly be more accessible to Navigation and Shipping. So Norway's strategic location may play a crucial role in the not so distant future. By Having a Good and Modern Highway System accessing all Major Ports and facilities (Industry, Logistics, Fishing, Shipbuilding, Agriculture etc.) is vital for their Future. 4) Norway is Blessed by its Geographic location: Having no economic or military rivals neighboring only friendly countries like Sweden and Finland (and a very small border with not so friendly Russia way up north). It has a Huge Exclusive Economic Zone: The Norwegian Sea, Rich in Fisheries and oil and gas. So the Highway infrastructure is a Vital artery not only for them but neighboring countries and Western Europe as well. So in Conclusion : Well Done Norway ! Wishing you success in these projects! Love and Respect for your Beautiful Country from Greece !!
MeqanichHD well, we have no problems with Russians, but Russia as a country is another story. It's not too long ago since they told us they might have to point their nuclear warheads towards us. Hardly a friendly thing to say.
With Norway having the largest Sovereign Fund in the world and being the biggest investor per capita globally its returns and interest alone provides the funding for this impressive project, besides if you view google maps you can see its progress.

Nice to see Norway actually uses their oil money to improve the countries infrastructure rather than give it to Royalty to spend on expensive yachts and cars (Saudi Arabia), or spend it on weapons (USA).
A a Norwegian myself I can say that this project is no less than pure insanity. Many of Norway's existing roads and railways are in a very poor state and in great need of improvement and maintenance, but the politicians can't seem to find the money to do it. How can they then find money for this? A lot of the cost is also supposed to be paid by road tolls. I fear the tolls will be so high that people and businesses will not afford to use the road. If it becomes reality, it will drain the countrys infrastructure budget for decades to come. The Existing portions of E39 is in great need for improvement so it would be better to use the money for that. Ferries are no great hindrance if they have frequent departures. Also, many of the construction methods proposed for this project are untested and chances are that they will encounter unforeseen difficulties, making it much more expensive than projected.
+Hallvard Wie You are clearly an idiot. Not blaming you, I have seen many in this comment section. Fixing the old road is more expensive than building the new one. The old road is longer because it's less straight, and material costs would be higher. Wage cost goes back into circulation so that part is irrelevant. Time distance on the new road will be a fraction of the time distance on the old one, making it cheaper and more effective for people to use, saving time, gas, tear on vehicles, etc. It's not prestige, it's a new and cheaper way to build a road with current technology. An Iphone is cheaper to make than an analogue phone with 1000miles of phone line, but I guess cell phones are too prestige for you too huh? Herrejesus, har du noen gang åpnet en bok?

Men hvis du hater infrastruktur så kan vi jo bare rive E6 i samme slengen så kan dere bruke gamleveien?

It's like just not even $10k per citizen. Take into consideration the huge time savings. Also this motorway covers like 80% of the population when it's done.
$47B seems a reasonable price tag. For 25 years here in New South Wales we've been building a 800km upgrade to dual carriageway which to date has cost $16B AUD with a "few billion" to go by 2020 (Pacific Highway Upgrade). Our geology is mountainous with many river crossings but nothing compared to this project. Also our cost to date is historical and does not include inflation. This Norwegian project is current and future cost, and likely to exceed the current estimate. The return on investment would be considerable, 21 hours down to (in my estimate) 8-10 hours depending on the speed limit. This would attract secondary investment in the towns and cities and attract more people to live in this country. Norway's economy will boom.

Just came from a video showcasing Dubai's future projects, gotta say this coastal highway is more impressive than whatever Dubai has ever built! Good job Norway!
Been there last year and drove North from Kristiansand to Bergen along the shoreline and on to Trondheim through the Eastern mountains. It was a stunning experience and of course especially as a tourist, the bridges and ferries are the most memorable experience. I was amazed by the efficiency of the ferries and they are a nice break after you have been driving for some time, letting you focus even more on the lovely landscapes as opposed to sitting in the car whilst still moving. For tourists the tunnels are of course not the best experience, since you miss out on quite a bit of landscape on lands while already in the tunnel and despite many EVs there (driving one myself) the air is quite bad because of the steepness and therefore lots of exhaust gasses. Also for the most of the tunnels, there understandably is no more ferry service alongside. For the amount of people living there, especially north of Bergen, you certainly could argue if all that crazyness is really necessary. I mean in Trondheim they are even struggling to keep a regular tram line up and running because of too little usage.

Bjørn V and why do you think that exactly? (Talking about the Rogfast part of it here) 1. It's not a political promise, it's a plan. A plan that Veivesenet (who are in charge of the Norwegian roads) have already started preperations for constructing. 2. The next election is in 2021, no one has started givng out promises like this yet. 3. How is it a good thing that this would not happen? Scared that water levels could somehow rise because of the large tunnel? 4. The idea of this project has been around since around 1990. Do you seriusly think someone planned this just to try and trick voters 30 years later?
A lot of things being "considered" here as of the release of this video; as a Norwegian I can safely say that none of this has been built in 2021, it's still being "considered". Some of the minor projects may have been started, and the budget has also doubled, which will lead to downscaling of the project. Norwegian politicians obsession with connecting tiny islands to the mainland continues, and tax payers continue to pay for it.

I'm very satisfied that my tax money is going to an ambitious project for once. Norway is a nation of practically minded people, without too much ambition, (efficiency above all else). This is why we don't have sky-scrapers, (we might have one or two small ones in Oslo), because thinking in grand scales is far beyond the normal for the average Norwegian. This will be expensive, but it will improve the infrastructure-efficiency by an order of magnitude, which is cheaper than patch-work maintenance of existing infrastructure. (there's also plans for upgrading all main railways to high-speed-capable double tracks.
I've always thought that the Norwegians were a bit intimidated by the natural architecture around them and thus refrained from futile gestures trying to outdo the fjords and mountains. However, these plans are certainly ambitious enough to rival some of the fjords and mountains.
I don't agree with your sentiment. I agree with being practical (why build upwards when you have the room to build outwards?) - but the "grand scales" bit? Nah. Barcode, tunnellprosjekter, etisk statsinvestering - hva legger du egentlig i "grand scales"?
am i the only one who thinks this is dumb? if they are spending that much money they should not make it a road for cars and they should look for a faster way maybe ultra fast metro

That’s beautiful, looking forward to future updates and that floating tunnel idea looks promising. But I wonder how it will react to rising water levels
Norway got extensive engineering expertise in off-shore (oil) rigs and deep sea installations. This area is also subject to many fierce storms - so I'm pretty sure they have accounted for many worst case scenarios.
Jarl S Deep sea installations aren't really affected by fierce storms....at least as far as swells are concerned. Off-shore rigs are rigid and boxy in shape, while floating tunnels are long, thin, and because of that would have to be able to bend, expand and contract. I imagine driving through one during a storm would be unnerving, due to the tunnel moving up and down. I honestly fail to see how floating tunnels could be rendered safe in any swells over 3 meters in height.
2Bn USD in Norway: a crap ton of inovative infrastructure. 2Bn USD in America: 1/6 a aircraft carrier. Definitely says something about government contracts

Sounds like one of those projects that will end up having multiple unexpected costs and extra needed years, each of them being almost as big as the initial budget, in this case resulting in over 200+ billion in total costs and like 15 extra years to finish it, give or take.
blaaa... we can take it... and we're used to it by now, so no surprise if that happends...
I doubt it. Norway have had decades of experience with these kind of projects.
Lots of things can be done with money, and Norway got tons of it
Norway use so much time on anything at all so this road wont probably be finished until 2999
Heh believe me, they might finish in time but they sure as hell go over the budget. There are too many unpredictables in these unique, mega projects that even the most sound design and management may not cover all possibilities. The numbers are just that, numbers. You have to pray to the engineering gods for the rest.

In theory, it's better than normal highways in every way.

the 3D models are so realistic! They even have realistic Norwegian drivers, two people in the passing lane overtaking NO ONE! 2:16 amazing

I would like to offer another view on the subject:
1) Norway is self reliant on funding these projects (no foreign loans, no debt money) - Thanks to Oil
2) They surely know that eventually their oil will run out in the future.

As a norwegian I love it. But the toll road fee. Holy moly. I think tourists too will take note of it.

TOLL TOLL TOLL
That is the thing, the state is more a guarantor for loans, or some such, and then people will have to pay it all back and then some, the tollroad tickets are sold by private companies who wants to make money on this, and this is in addition to the high fees and taxes on everything, including cars and their use.
Dont say that! The plan was to fool the tourist into them all paying up the toll, so we can go free...!!

Imagine breaking down in that tunnel
Imagine needing to pee and being stuck in that long ass tunnel without any stops.
very long tunnels typically have places to pull over, id assume this tunnel would be the same but who knows.

The word "structural" should NEVER be used as a replacement for "Engineering". There is more engineering in this planned transport infrastructure than "structural plans".
Probably because engineering solutions are addicting. Those Norwegians are masters at the craft, especially submerged solutions. Ask the Russians about Kursk, better yet. Go check out the video of how they finally raised it.

Bjørn V and why do you think that exactly?
(Talking about the Rogfast part of it here)
They've already started it, imbecile
A lot of things being "considered" here as of the release of this video; as a Norwegian I can safely say that none of this has been built in 2021, it's still being "considered". Some of the minor projects may have been started, and the budget has also doubled, which will lead to downscaling of the project.
Norwegian politicians obsession with connecting tiny islands to the mainland continues, and tax payers continue to pay for it.
I haven’t been paying attention much (norwegian too) but haven’t they started a bit on the road? Or maybe I’m thinking of something else
Thanks for the update
@@user-uw1id6je1n Eiganestunnelen through Stavanger was a part of the Rogfast project, and have been opened. But the Rogfast tunnel itself haven't started yet. Statens Vegvesen is set to sign the first contract for the Rogfast tunnel in the next month. And they hope construction starts this fall.
Oh. I was googling and couldn't find any answers for what was actually built. Apparently nothing. Lame video.
(there's also plans for upgrading all main railways to high-speed-capable double tracks.
yeah they will use all the tax money to pay for it then not let you use it unless you pay for it yet again each time you want to use it
I've always thought that the Norwegians were a bit intimidated by the natural architecture around them and thus refrained from futile gestures trying to outdo the fjords and mountains.
Your population density is too low for sky scrapers
am i the only one who thinks this is dumb?

That’s beautiful, looking forward to future updates and that floating tunnel idea looks promising. But I wonder how it will react to rising water levels
I'm more concerned about potential storms that are sure to hit the area sooner or later. How would the floating tunnel react to swells?
Instakardo I suppose the connections from the floats and tunnels would be made so they can be extended to keep up with rising sea levels.
And the fact that it is tidal
