  • This bird-tail version of the Crossbow RC ornithopter was an early experimental prototype. It should not be confused with the Crossbow 2 ornithopter kit that is currently available from BirdKit.com.
The prototype in this video uses the wings for steering, and it does that by adjusting the tension on the left and right wings. The tail is a lifting surface in this model. The Crossbow 2, on the other hand, uses a downforce tail for roll and pitch control.
Which method is better? The experimental prototype made more efficient use of the tail surface, and it functioned more like a real bird. But using the wing tension for steering meant that the overall tension could not be optimized. It was hard to get this to work properly, whereas the kit version with the downforce tail is easier to set up. The prototype had gyroscopic stabilization, which is not needed in the kit version. Both methods provide effective steering.
The prototype in this video had a balsa wood body, whereas the new kit is fiberglass.
