- The current church situation in Ukraine has a long history. Millions of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians were excommunicated from the church. In response, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has today restored them to communion and granted their church autocephaly.

The issue isn't only territorial and jurisdictional. The issue is that the EP recognized a schismatic group that doesn't have Apostolic Succession and isn't canonical. Also, all the independent Orthodox Jurisdictions, including the EP, recognized that the schismatic Ukrainian sect is a schismatic sect that is void of grace and Apostolic Succession. The EP's decision to grant Tomos to these schismatics is to go against the consensus of the Orthodox world and to go against Canon Law.
All Autocephalous churches were schismatic before they received their autocephaly, apart from Serbia, which asked under the canonical way autonomy and autocephaly. Nobody said that Greek, or Romanian or even more Russian.or Bulgarian Churches were schismatic, when they were accepted bach to communion, their autocephaly being recognised after 70 or 100 years or more. Schism is a dynamic situation, not a permanenrt one, and its resolution rests on its cause, and on the schismatics wish to restore communion, and of course, their orthodoxy under the schismatic situation. In Ukraine, schismatics had been forced to the schism by Moscow, who defrocked them without serious reason, but they always wanted to restore communion with the Orthodox Church, not under Moscow of course, and they were fully orthodox. Just like every autocephaly before. So, they were received bacj after they asked for it on the third grade of church judge, the EP, and then the EP, having been asked to give autocephaly to Ukraine by the ukrainian government, just like every autocephaly before, called all the bishops to resolve the jurisdictional issues and organise themselves into one church, that would be granted autocephaly. That's all. It is the same situation like any autocephaly before, no difference. The only difference is that some bishops did not come back to their original Mother Church, after the cancellation of the 1686 act by the EP, but prefered to stay under Moscow. No problem with that, although they should be punished under canon law. But the EP prefered not to give rise to a new schism by itself. It still recognises every bishop in Ukraine, although Moscow does not, because now the last one has to take permission by the autocephalous Ukrainian Church so as to keep any bishop in Ukraine. But every other aspect is just the same. Nobody protested for the recogniton of Schismatic Greeks in 1851, Romanians in 1885, Bulgarians in 1948, Russians in 1589. It is all the same.

Nonsense. Do you deny that Bartholomew has no jurisdiction over any church in Ukraine. That belongs to Moscow. You ignore this. How about the fact that this new schismatic church was founded where a canonical orthodox church already existed for hundreds of years. How about the fact that the canonical church is larger by a multiple of 3 to 5 with s much higher and frankly incomparable attendance. Is it creating unity when you make a autonomous decision supporting a church split in a foreign country you have no jurisdiction over. How about not getting approval from any other EP. Recognizing them was part of its jurisdictional power (right of appeal) so they cannot be considered as schismatic anymore. Of course Constantinople cannot take all decisions alone as far as Faith is concerned. But as far as appeal and organization is concerned yes Constantinople has some powers from eucumenical conciles (4th councile). Otherwise it would be chaos. And the fact this jurisdictional power is denied is what creates chaos.

Why does the EP interfere in schismatics in Ukraine but not the old calendarist groups and others who have been affected by the bad decisions of the EP? Instead they rejected the local Church in Ukraine which has actual autonomous freedom rather than the slavery to the EP that it is now proposing for the schismatics.
And despite the EP's insistence that all can go to communion there, the entirety of the Ukrainian Church as well as the Russian Church and the ROCOR CANNOT commune with them at this point despite the EP repeating they can.
If the EP cared about Ukrainians he would care about the millions of Orthodox Christians under Met. Onufry and the entirety of their hierarchy which has NOT asked for autocephaly. The ones who asked in the 90s was the same Filaret nowadays who is a schismatic due to his pride and other many offenses. He wanted to be patriarch then and still does now, but the EP decides to accept them WITHOUT any repentance which is NOT pastoral, but an outrageous attack to the faithful sons and daughters of the Ukrainian Church under Metropolitan Onufry.

Millions of excommunicated Ukrainians can't be a minor issue. In the end, the curent Patriarch of Kiev is neither Filaret nor Makariy, so order has been restored by the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Russians shouldn't have left communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the situation may have been similar with the one in Moldova, where both The Mitropoly of Bessarabia and the Church of Moldova coexisted, without any schism between The Russian and Romanian Patriarchates. There, Romanians have the canonical right, but most people rather go to the Russian affiliated churches most of the time, maybe due to the fact that they own most churches in the country.
Politics and The Body of Christ shouldn't interfere with each other, as we know very well what happened with the Crusades, when the Pope played politics.
The EP himself has excommunicated Ukrainians de facto even if he won't admit it when he says the UOC under Met. Onufry isn't canonical and is no longer the Metropolitan of Kiev and Ukraine. And Filaret STILL wears the patriarchal garb, STILL says he's the patriarch, and is STILL running the show in the words of "Met." Epiphany himself even. No order has been restored. The two schismatic groups are still not joined together in anything but on paper. They are still persecuting the Orthodox Church in stealing churches and vandalizing and as of late, throwing explosives into their narthex! That's no order. That's not peace. It's insane for MP to remain in communion with THAT. The situation with the MP and the Romanians is nothing similar to two schismatic groups and a uniate president asking to be recognized as the 'real church' over the actual Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Concercing Ukrainian nationalists, they really are violent, they may be right in their claims for a Church without Russian-aligned priests, but they went too far when they started vandalizing churches.
Romanians are more tempered, and won't try to disturb peace, especially when it comes to Church affairs, and maybe that's the reason that the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Russian one coexist peacefully in Bessarabia, unlike in Ukraine.
In the end, I still don't know if Russians are currently in schism with all Orthodox Patriarchates, or only with the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The next time a Council is held let's invite instead all the keyboard warriors and trolls on social media to preside over it.
Everyone has an opinion, everyone is an expert, and everyone seems to be able to declare what is right and what is heresy.
I doubt everyone has the full facts, these high level issues are to be resolved between the Patriarchs. If either are in error then it is not for us to judge. Things will sort themselves out over time and relationships between family can be fractious at times.
If you have concerns speak to your Spiritual Father (if you dont have one I suggest you find one) and look for guidance.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the only legitimate orthodox church in Ukraine.
The Orthodox Church needs to address the situation in North America where there are overlapping jurisdictions often worshipping in a langauge foreign to the country... The Ukrainians, especially, have been in Canada for 3 generations and use English for everything but the liturgy of the Church...That is why they have lost so many of their children and grandchildren...

Even if the EP had the right to hear appeals from other local Churches (which it doesn't), the canons do not allow an appeal to be heard without hearing from the bishops from the region the appeal is from. Even the Pope would not dream of hearing an appeal without hearing all the parties.

The separate church set up in Ukraine may be in violation of canon law, specifically that there cannot be two bishops overseeing the same area. Much is made of this, with charges of schism, among others. However, it is time to be consistent, and not selective. There is a glaring example of overlapping jurisdictions, not only of two, but often more bishops in North America. These Orthodox churches are set up on nationalistic lines. In addition to violating canon law, North American churches risk the sin of phyletism - conflating the church with an ethnicity or nationality. Yes, the heritage of immigrant communities is valuable. Let's celebrate it! But Jesus Christ and His church comes first. Why can't there be an "Orthodox Church of the United States of America, Russian or Greek, Serbian, etc. section?
Take the example of the new Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in the U.S.A. I have no doubt that he is fine man, and he is well-spoken of. However, he has spent a total of one semester living in America as a teacher at Holy Cross Seminary. Is this country of 330 million people, the most powerful economic and military force on the planet, bereft of a single citizen who can lead the American church?
Jesus speaks of turning the other cheek, and walking the extra mile with those who offend us. St. Paul says it is sometimes better to be wronged bring matters to the outside. It is time for those making much of the Ukrainian church to apply the same standards in North America.

In Orthodoxy, autocephaly is tied to territory, and specifically a related state/nation. Ukraine became independent about 30 years ago. The Metropolis (seat of a senior bishop) of Kyiv is the mother of Moscow, not the opposite. But Kyiv has been beset by various invaders for literally a 1,000 years and more. In the interim, the Ukrainians sought to have their own church as they could see how deep their Faith was and is. This has led to the Greek Catholics (Ukrainians following the Roman Pope) and multiple "jurisdictions" of Orthodox in Ukraine - all wanting no part of Moscow. When Moscow refused to act, the EP revoked the privileges of Moscow with respect to Kyiv (circa 18th century) which Moscow had violated, and issued the Tomos (rights and limitations) to a unification council choice for Kyiv Primate, Epiphanios. The only canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine is that of the Primate of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanios.
So, it is more than the EP being first among equals. It is the EP applying good stewardship within Orthodox Christendom, when all other measures failed. And the EP recognizing that Moscow isn't worthy to control Kyiv which it never had the right to do.
The churches of Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria and many others gained autocephaly from Constantinople.
Why shouldn't Ukraine get it's autocephaly too?
Question of autocephaly is ecclesiastical and not political. It does happen in it's time and not by "I want it now" principle.
And all of those churches were initially shunned by churches that had previously been granted autocephaly (independence). Give it time.
And hold De. Chryssavgis’ horses. His exposition of history leaves out the reinstatement of the Moscow Patriarchate under Saint Tikhon of Moscow in 1818. So we just forget about a canonised saint of the church to fit our narrative?

The pastoral argument is the most important, but should also be the case with the Exarchate of Churches of the Russian Tradition in Western Europe, otherwise the decisions of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate seem less than consistent. Why in that second case does the Ecumenical Patriarch not see any need to meet his own flock's pastoral needs?

A reminder to all the churches now autocephalous, and that we’re not among the pentarchy, that there existence came to be because of a national will and demand, breaking away from the governance of a far away authority! Back in the days the entire Balkan was under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Do not stand with Russia by fear of it or of a schism, but stand by the right of the Ukrainians to determine their will, as the day the Church of Constantinople understood you and granted you autocephalous status, the day you wanted to distance yourself and govern yourself, as Ukraine is currently doing!

Honestly you seem to be the only one who really understand the situation of the Ukrainian Church. Unfortunately many of our Orthodox believers are mislead by the Russian propaganda. The Russian Patriarch acuse EP for not respecting the "canons" but the Russian Patriarch himself do not respect the canons, by having an illegal Metropolity in a teritory in which normally the Romanian Patriarchate should had all the authority.

They break the rules of the canons for more than 28-29 (or 72 after some specialists) years, when they sould go back in Russia. PS: You should remember which Patriarch blessed the tanks which after, went at war against our ukrainian orthodox brothers. You also must remeber who wanted the title of the "third Rome" and for this (for their pride) did not even received the Tomos until our days. Neither of you understand the problems between Russia and Ukraine. It is not simply a matter of "listen Russian opinion", nor is it true that Ukraine should have Autocephaly just because they are a separate nation now.
No, the problem now is that the Ecumenical Patriarch ignored the real history, used the question of Autocephaly as an excuse to act like the Roman Popes, and made the schism worse instead of better, even encouraging the Ukrainian government to persecute the only canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The persecution has already started.
As for "listen RUssian opinion", we do not have to do that when so many other Autocephalous Churches have already gone on record criticizing the Ecumenical Patriarch's action, agreeing with Patriarch Kyrill that it was not only uncanonical, but it has already done a great deal of harm.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople because of its historical location as the capital of the former Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire and its role as the Mother Church of most modern Orthodox churches, Constantinople holds a special place of honor within Orthodoxy and serves as the seat for the Ecumenical Patriarch, who enjoys the status of Primus inter pares (first among equals) among the world's Eastern Orthodox prelates and is regarded as the representative and spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians. Αlso the Ecumenical Patriarchate has the right to establish a Church and this right has been taken from the Ecumenical Synods. On the eve of the Ecumenical Synods, it has been decided that each country should have its own self-centered church! So the Ukrainian autocephalus is normal and theologically permissible! The Patriarch Cyril, who orders the Russians all over the world not to enter the Temples you mention the Ecumenical Patriarch, is irreconcilable. The Russians who live in Constantinople or Greece have Shepherd of the Constantinople Patriarch and the Αrchbishop of Athens! The Ecumenical Patriarchate ceased to exist in Florence 1439, after the signature of it's Emperor, Patriarch and hierarchs of the Union with the heretical Pope. Constantinople became a muslim Ottoman capital city, with an Ottoman Orthodox Church at it's Phanar (Lighthouse) neighborhood, and since Attaturk it became a provincial city named Istanbul. Besides the heresy of Ecumenism that infested the Phanariot centre it's patriarch became now ,according to the Apostolic canons 10 until 16 and all confirmed by Ecumenical Councils) also a schismatic. The Russian Church has now all rights to build Orthodox Churches in Turkey and organize Orthodox services in all of Turkey, since communion is severed with the Phanariots and their Structures.

Yannis your comment honestly is the most correct one from all. You are right the, EP always had the right to grant autonomy. He did that with all the existent Churches. Let`s remember that in the 16th centruy the Patriarch of Moscow tried to make himself an EP by taking with his own will the title of third Rome (a gesture which shows only proudness). In that time The EP heard about this fact and "punished" him by postponing the autocephaly of the Russian Church. They do not have a document which states that they are autocephaly until now. We also must remember that the Moscow Patriarchate took with force the teritory of Bessarabia under his juridstiction, when the commnists camed. A teritory which always was under the Romanian Patriarchate. In this teritory now there exists 2 Metropolities, one under Moscow and one under the Romanian Patriarchate, and the attitude of the Moscow Metropolity is still hostile. He (the Moscow Patriarchate) speaks about "canonical rights" but he is the only who do not want to respect them. The canons say that he must leave from that teritory but he just ignore the canons. Plus let`s rmeber the Patriarch who "blessed" the tanks which fighted against their orthodox brothers in Ukraine. IT WAS HIM! Unfrotunately many of our Orthodox brothers are deceived by the Russian propaganda because they do not know the history of the Church.

They are doing just the same with the popes of the crusaders era, they depose or break communio with the rightful orthodox bishops and they install alterntive russian hierarchy, so as to become the Popes of the Orthodoxy.
