- Hi.
If you have seen my motovlog #10 you would know that I fucked up my clutch plates. So, a brand new tutorial on how to change clutch plates on your Honda CBR 954rr became obvious.
In this tutorial I will be changing the clutch plates, springs and gasket. Below you'll find info on working order, tools and torque settings.
Enjoy!
Working order:
1. Make sure you have all the replacement parts ready (show the parts)
2. Place new clutch plates in engine oil for one night.
3. Place two pieces of wood under the front and rear tire (so that the angle is sharp enough and you do not have to drain the engine oil)
4. Disassemble right fairing panel
5. Disassemble clutch bracket and cable
6. Remove cover
7. Disassemble clutch plates (friction plates and plain plates)
8. (optional: measure thickness of friction plates, warpage of plainplates and the free length of the clutch springs)
9. Replace old for new (note the right order and last friction plate has green marker so be sure to place it in right way!)
10. Install new clutch springs
11. Replace new gasket (I used Loctite 574)
12. Install cover
13. Install right fairing panel.
Torque settings:
• Clutch spring bolts: 12Nm
• Bolt cover: max. 10 Nm
Tools you will be needing are the following:
• Allen key: 5 (metric)
• Ratchet: 8 & 10 (metric)
• Torque wrench: 8 & 10 (metric)
• Vernier caliper
A workplace manual would come in handy.

Dude, sick video. You described everything so well, I think I'm going to have to service my clutch soon and I was gonna take it to have someone to do it because I thought it was gonna be too hard. I'm so glad I found your video because I will order the parts and do it myself. Thanks!!!
+shadowchemos , Thanx mate. I'm glad you liked it and that it made you decide to change them yourself! Regarding the 'steel plates' I did some experimenting. I believe it's my vlog#11 where I explain what I did. Perhaps interesting for you; It can lead to cost savings. Good luck with the job!
Perfect tutorial 10/10, I might do this to my 954 since there is a noise coming from the clutch, maybe it's the springs... Cheers from Spain
Great video! Was wondering how difficult it was going to be to do this. Will watch again when I need to do my 954rr.
Holieocorneious Gerhart Thanx! It is not that difficult as long as you take the right steps in the right order. Good luck with it!
Great video so helpful!
👍great job thank you for the full video , this is my first time , and I feel confident I can do this with ease.
Thanx mate and good luck with the job!
Just some experienced advice. Put a small amount of loc tight on you clutch plate bolts . They will back off and destroy a engine. 2nd don't put grease on your bolts for the cover because lubricating a bolt with allow it to stretch when tighten. Glad your work went well. Not picking at you. Good job. But that's some tips from a 15 yr tech.
barry rose Thanx for the tips! They are useful to u's all.
Hello Dutchie,
Nice video, very detailed and useful.
R.I.P. ( Ride in peace )
Thnx mate! Took me some time to make this video, but glad you like it.
Very good video sir. saving me a ton of money and the hassle of waiting on a over priced shop ,,, thanks
TX_COWBOY_FPV thanks mate. great that the video is useful! good luck!
Awesome video
top vid. Enjoyed watching, just about to change mine
MegaGaz66 Thnx for that and good luck with it!
De beste en schoonste monteur die ik heb gezien😚❤️
Thanx. Ik doe mijn best ;-)
Great video, I plan on changing mine this coming weekend. After this I feel confident I can do it myself (even though I have never change a clutch on a bike).
Thank you
You're welcome buddy. Good luck with job!
So, how did it go?
Well I would have done it this weekend but.....the spring did not show up till today. So tomorrow then.
Well I should of added to my comments earlier But it went very well and very simple. only comment I would add to the written description is the order of the clutch plates. Will say the info is in your video but I screen shot it so I could refer back to it. All in all though any simplton (like myself) can change a clutch with your excellent video.
Super Dave70 thnx for your feedback mate!
Riding over 10yrs, never felt the need to learn how to wheelie, I must be a right boring bastard!
any idea if you can just use a regular paper/cork/ rubber gasket with some silicone sealant? or does it HAVE to be just silicone sealant? because you can order clutch cover gaskets from like anywhere and im just now finding this out after i already ordered it...
What measurement did u use for torque inches, pounds, or nueton meters
isto ao lado do velocimentro e um marcado de mudanças??
Hey bro did you feel much difference with response and feel? And is your front headlight tinted? Thanks
Good morning my friend can tell me if the part cod honda 22000 MCJ 305,Outer Comp, Clutch fits in our CBR954 2003 I'm from Brazil
Hey, how should a motorcycle behave after a clutch change? I just did the change, but the new clutch slips on all the shift
You don’t have to soak them overnight... I’ve never done so and have been changing clutches for a long time. And if you think about it no shop is keeping your bike over night just for clutches.... let them soak for sure but overnight is over kill... just saying also good oil is great for your clutches also
Thanks Men !
Thanks for watching and you're welcome!
nice work
thnx mate!
goeie video man!
Bedankt kerel. Hopelijk heb/had je er iets aan!
Is it dry or wet clutch ???
I would recommend draining oil and changing filter. Old, clutch may have left debris behind when it failed.
New clutch, new oil.
Hi Bob. Thanx for your input. I agree. It is better to replace oil and filter; whether it's necessary I wonder. However, in my case, oil and filter were recently replaced.
Does your manual show actual wire diagrams? I've downloaded a pdf version for my 929rr but it does not have any schematics for wiring. Anyone know where I can get it?
Yes it does. You could try a 954rr dedicated forum. Thnx for watching mate and Hopefully useful for you.
Bro i have one question for you about 954. When I hold clutch and put in 1 gear bike go very slowly forward but very very slowly and i very hard find a neutral if you can understand me ... So my question is, do i have to change CLUTCH or PLATES ? Sorry for my english .. Thanks.
This can have various causes and is difficult to determine remotely. When the engine is running and you increase the rpm's but you hardly have any power available, then the clutch plates could be worn out, but that does not necessarily have to be the case. It might just as well have to do with the adjustment of the clutch. Depending on your technical knowledge I would advise you to go to a dealer for a check up. Good luck!
Liked the video.
One thing I did not like the use of WD40 on casing bolts.
Wd40 great for freeing up bolts and the likes. But has No long term greasing or protection property's.
Which may come to bite you in the future. With bolt/s being seized with corrosion.
Would of been far better of dipping the thread in the bowl of oil you had sitting under the bike. And using correct torq value.
Still good video. Keep them coming.
I watched it as a quick recap, before doing my first clutch replacement on a Bike in many years.
A 1997 Honda BlackBird
Forever Cornish Thank you for the critical remark. With the knowledge of today I would certainly not do it anymore. Thank you for giving a tip for improvement!
@@DutchieDoes Thank you Sir for kind reply.
good day to you
Great video - may need to do this sometime. Have to say I'm impressed by the condition of your bike. Looks very tidy for 90K. I'm assuming that's kilometres and not 90k miles on the clock?
Hi Tim. Nice to hear man. The better I take care of it, the longer I can enjoy this great bike! And you're right: it's km's. Thnx for watching (I guess it's a long video, but I tried to show as much as possible of the whole process ;-) ) BTW: I did some experimenting with the steel plates and it worked (if you like, you can watch my vlog #11 to see what I did)
Cool. Will check it out. Just out of interest, did you install the gear indicator and if so what make is it? Easy to install?
The brand is Starlane Engear and I installed it myself (in 2009). I remember it wasn't very difficult. For the electrical part I just followed the instructions that came with the product.
Yes yes i can do it. Thank u.
Rich Gleason Well done! Thanks for using the video ;-)
put on the first gear and block back wheel to avoid destroy something in the engine
thnx for your tip
I think it is easiest way to loosen and tighten clutch basket.
wd-40 isnt a grease... its a Water Dissapant.. hence wd.. a drop of oil would be fine too.. for the rest nice vid..
what does the cable do btw what enters the cover..? is it a sensor build inside.. ?
Thnx. And you're right, it is. My mistake. I guess you're referring to the 'pulse generator coil' wiring that's enters the cover from above...?
yeah... i got a clear clear clutch cover.. doing pre mech stuff.. wondering what it was ... manual says crankshaft positioning sensor.. . does not physically interact with anything i think.. ?
what part number are the springs of the clutch ....?
I do not have the numbers of the clutch springs at hand, but you can easily find out through a motorcycle dealer. Good luck!
where did you order your clutch plates?
Hi Jarrod. I ordered mine via my motorcycle dealer. He told me that it was not possible to order original Honda clutch plates directly as a private individual (in any case in the Netherlands). I suppose non-Honda clutch plates can easily be ordered online. (make sure you replace the plates in the right order). Good luck with it!
The last clutch plate went to the wrong hole, It should not be placed in the same hole as the others. But it looks like it works?
I believe this is what you're referring to so for clarity: the last color-marked 'friction plate' should be located into the shallow slots in the housing.
@@DutchieDoes yea. Looked like that you put the last one in the same slot as the others.
do you still have the bike? Is it reliable?
I have this motorcycle since 2008 and since then I rode almost 70k with it (road, vacation and circuit). The Blade has never let me down. My experience is that it is very reliable bike. However, just like with a woman, you have to take good care of it ;-)
@@DutchieDoes thats some good info man. I sold my 2017 Aprilia Tuono because of the annoying on off throttle. I have seen a 954cc with 14000km. Have you ridden modern bikes with electronic throttle? If yes how is the deceleration fuel cut of the cbr?
if carlsberg made videos
nice vid!
bit too much ASMR but nice anyway!
Oef, that is a long long video.
Kinda skipped through it ;)
Well, it's a tutorial regarding replacement of clutch plates for a 954rr. You're probably not the right audience for this video ;-)
Probably not ;)
Wait no one here is bothered by his mouth smacking!?!?
Dude I went to the comments just to check for someone else !!!!
4 years later and same thing lol. Helpful video but it was killing me
Nowadays they call that ASMR🤷🏻♂️
@@MainstreetMechanics ahahahha true
would be a better tutorial if you actually showed what your doing. You dont even show yourself installing the plates. You cut the basket completely off
TRAITOR!!!!!!!! Yamaha watch, lololol
No. It's a Honda watch. They've just misspelled!
