Steely Dan and Snarky Puppy delivered great performances under the stars at the Bowl. Anyone else miss Steve Winwood or Aimee Mann (both scheduled but removed from the bill?)
Good to see 'The Dan' crew back on the road and delivering the classic numbers, we are fortunate they are still with us, minus the great Walter Becker (RIP) love em!
Still having euphoric recall from seeing The Dan for two nights in St. Petersburg, FL. Sonic bliss beyond words. They played this both nights. The groove was amazing. It's good here and thanks for posting, but it doesn't really capture the essence of being in the room with the likes of these world class musicians. Freddie Washington and Keith Carlock are musical alchemists locked into this epic groove. Thank you Donald and Walter for everything all these years - Walter was surely in the room the entire time. It doesn't get much better than this!
Great days. Steely Dan play the Hollywood Bowl last night and I can sit and have my morning coffee in Australia and get a taste of the show. Donald looks to be in fine form. Thank you
sad that Walter couldn't be there but it still is the Dan when Donald puts such a full sweet band together for live shows!amazed he's still touring.we are so blessed!
I was at the concert and this tour is not to be missed. Donald Fagen has assembled a talented group of musicians and they sound terrific. If your a Steely Dan fan it’s worth traveling to another city to see this band live. They are really tight and the sound at the Hollywood Bowl was very good. Fagen is in his seventies so who knows when there will be another opportunity to see Steely Dan live? Did I mention the drummer is phenomenal?
My family and I were there last night. My kids (10, 12, & 14) loved it. Sadly, I think there were very few kids in the audience to witness this classic American culture that has no equal on today's stage. I'm doing my best to develop a new generation of Danfandom. Special kudos to 1) drummer Keith Carlock for his super-tight rhythm track throughout the show, 2) the guitar section composed of Jon Herington and Adam Rogers - the guitar solos in Steely Dan's catalogue are so complex and diverse no one guitarist could possibly learn and play them all and these guys did an amazing job, and finally 3) Donald Fagan, who doesn't know he's 74 years old - amazing performance. I missed Steve Winwood, but Snarky Puppy was a great opening act. Thanks for the post, ISIXOXISI.
I'm 28 and I bought tickets for my dad and I. I grew up listening to Steely Dan with him in the car all the time. When I was younger I didn't really appreciate them that much, but as I got older I fell in love with their music. We had such a great time and I had a lot of fun bonding with him. It definitely took my dad back to a great era!
I saw them in Fort Worth a few days ago. I'm 23 and have been listening to Steely Dan for about 4 years. At the show I saw TONS of young people, from kids to teens and young adults. It was a great show and I made some friends. Must be based on location because in Texas a ton of young people were enjoying it.
Yes sadly when I go to concerts for classic groups like this, it's all a bunch of old farts like me. Now I certainly have a great time, because we are all there just to enjoy the music and not get in a fight or anything - but it does concern me that younger generations will lose the chance to appreciate this.
Was there las nite with 2 of my best buds… Tight show with Snarky Puppy and of course the consummate top shelf of the DAN…. Killer show, thanks for the post!! Probably the 15th, 16th time of seen em.. Miss Becker though, but new jam fret man rocked most deliciously!!! Be well all!!🌊🐕🌊👀🎸👍👂❤️👀
In the studio version, on the third verse when Fagen sings the word "hole" Nichols throws a huge, messy echo/reverb on it as if you were yelling as you fall into a huge cavern. On the remix, maybe throw a heavy wind sound on the first verse as the grey men fall past you?,,,,,just sayin'!

The bizarrest part of this song is "I'll fly down to Mus-well-brook...(and) feed all the Kangaroos"....Muswellbrook (we say it like Muscle-brook) is a coal mining town in the Hunter Valley Australia.. about an hour from me ...Why would they write lyrics about it in the 1970S??? Walter and Donald loved to refer to esoteric places and cocktails. The reference is about leaving the U. S. and getting as far away from economic disaster as possible. Time would then be spent hanging out, watching the kangaroos. Witty sarcasm is the name of the game. Also, that small town in Australia fits in well with the rhythm of the song.
I heard that donald looked on a globe to find the furtherest place from where they were (preferably with three syllables :-)) and muswellbrook got the gig. I wish he'd chosen sing-le-ton (my home town 45km down the road) oh well

We had front row box seats, and every time someone raised their iPhone to take a photo or do a video the overly zealous security people jumped up and harassed them to stop taking a photo or video. At $800 a ticket, and after having my camera checked by the security people at the entrance, I assumed there would be no problem taking a few shots of what was a wonderful evening of two great groups. Did you get harassed for shooting this video? The security people need to be fired..
That happen to me yesterday in the last song, when everyone was already standing. I was confused But right now I uploaded "Peg" and someone commented that Steely Dan didn't want record footage..honestly I didn't hear that in the concert

Donald's voice sounds tired here. No disrespect because SD is my favourite all-time band but you can see him straining for the notes and he is almost a quarter tone flat. It's become more pronounced over the past five years. He is human, after all.
He's still got it if you ask me. I feel so fortunate to get to see him in about a week in Chicago! My expectation is not that he will sound like he did in the 70s.

Great to see Donald still going - needs some help with the voice nowadays understandably. Magic moment to see them finally in London in 2009.
Interesting to hear the Texas shuffle on this rendition
Isn't it a Porcaro-shuffle originally?

The song itself was inspired by the Black Friday gold scam of 1869. This scam was so big, it ruined the presidency of U.S. Grant.
