I know I posted this before but we playing this song when my son (24) was dying from cancer. The words of thirst and growing old hit us hard but the song somehow makes me think of Heaven. For me Sweet Thing is my boy who will never grow old like me and you.

Spent years going to school in PA and passed through Allentown many times traveling to and from my home in NJ. Now my son, who grew up in CA, is returning to PA where I learned so much. Going to make this video one of my favorites, Ed. I'll listen to it and think of my son and yours. As well as you and Monica.

That's so sweet Rochelle, I am sure it is so. Edward was o outgoing and funny. He made friends very easily and loved life. It is so very sad for us both. God bless you and your family. We just had his stone blessed on All Souls. We recalled Christ's promise of everlasting life.

Eamon Mcdonagh+ Would you please, please, please be so kind as to post a reply to me with the link for the video of this performance you speak of with high praise, where the Waterboys cover 'Sweet Thing' on the Late Late Show? I searched and was unable to find it. Am very eager to hear it. Thank you.

somewhere between the time I first heard those opening chords and now I became an old man. When I enter into the pearly gates it will not surprise me to hear the words "and I shall never grow so old again, and I will walk in sweet gardens all wet with rain.

25 was good for me. Young strong, hair and all the girls!!! Now at 69 shit hurts and it's more difficult to move. Less worry as most goals are behind me. Some regrets from mistakes too. Both ages have benefits. Savor it and don't waste time.

any of the people who criticise the style of this version know nothing about van morrison, the very joy of his live performances are the enhancements, differences and variations to the song. perfect renditions of the album version is not what van fans want to here. his life stuff is so much better hence why people travel the world and pay fotunes to see the man

GENIUS!! Van Morrison rarely plays the same song, the same way, TWICE!! That is what makes him an artist. It isn't just about the lyrics, its about the whole "creation" and how it takes you away. There is a reason he has been around for 40 years, and he is still selling out shows. I dare you to find another artist who can do what he does, without being HIGH, at almost 70 years old.

This show used to be on UA-cam in its entirety, not each song separately. One night I wanted to listen to Astral Weeks CD and couldn't find it so I looked on UA-cam and watched this whole show - Astral Weeks live!!! I was totally blown away by how great a show this is...have since purchased the CD from Amazon, but DVD of it is unavailable and resale it costs a small fortune. Wish the whole show was still available on YT...just not the same watching it all chopped up. So happy I got to see it before it was removed! The crowd was freaking out it was so incredible! Can't imagine how amazing it must have been for those lucky enough to be present...WOW!

@@vanmorrison4516 If you really are Van Morrison, which would be incredible, God bless you, I love you! You were the last "live" music I saw in person before this tragedy began (at Jazz Fest). It is the only time I ever saw you "live" although you've been one of my favorites for many decades, so I suppose it was a good bookend to hundreds of concerts I attended over many years. If you are not really Van Morrison, I still love you and wish you all the best! I still believe, as President Trump says, the best is yet to come!

If you're listening to Van for his enunciation, you shouldn't be listening to Van. He moves you or he doesn't. It isn't about the words.

I sort of agree--if you already know the song, this version is fine. But part of what makes Astral Weeks so extraordinary is lyrical content. Every song is a gem, lyrically. So this version of sweet thing is lovely, but I miss the beautiful beautiful poetry of the words.

I know it's a cliché to compare this kind of music with 'artists' like Justin Bieber, One Direction, etc. but isn't it such a shame that talented, genius artists like Van Morrison only get 100,000+ views on their videos while people like One Direction, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber get millions upon millions of views when they've barely even had any input into their own music? They don't even write their own songs. It's all about promoting popularity and looks over the actual beauty of music these days. Such a shame.

Look at it another way. Astral Weeks is 46 years old this year, can you imagine Justin Beiber and 1D being listened to in 2060? I very much doubt it, and sadly I won't be around then to prove it.

it is only preference. "pop culture" has a great influence on preference, and vice versa so they feed each other. however, preference can and does mature in a lot of people. and I'm thankful I prefer this music. so now off I go to listen to joni Mitchell's "both sides now" live.

All Van fans know the history of Astral Weeks. For more than 40 years I have listened but never truly understood. I find that the most powerful reason for acclaiming the album as one of the very best ever compiled. If you want a literal understanding of this art, then I believe you are to remain forever unsatisfied and dissatisfied. Let the music and lyric take you and absorb you and some time shine a clear light but often leave you in the dark. Not everything can be explained and not everything understood. As in life so in art.
