Reminder, if you have Pro Tools "First" this will look a little different as there is not a proper "Playback Engine" window (to my knowledge). Additionally if you are on a PC there are other factors like a ASIO driver that will need to be installed.
@Aysha Luzia Penha I'm not as familiar with Pro Tool first, but it looks like there is still a Playback Engine menu. A scarlet should be "plug and play" so presumably just plugging it in and selecting it in the Playback Engine would be the first step. After that check back in with the video to troubleshoot. I've got a Behringer UMC 22, an MPK mini 3, a Yeti mic and some Sony headphones(as well as electro-acoustic and electric guitars) so you can see I've at least got a(very cheap) setup. I'm interested in making music that is experimental and probably a bit different, although not necessarily very complex, but I do love as much sonic variety as possible. I like hearing instruments and effects that sound dramatically different.
Right now I can't even get pro tools to be audible, but once I do what am I going to be missing without the full version of Pro tools? As a songwriter who likes variety, but who isn't ever going to be particularly competent at the more complex side of production, is it worth getting full fat pro tools?

Thanks Chris, this saved me a lot of troubleshooting time! I went from the studio to my home studio and couldn't figure out why I couldn't hear anything. Fixing the I/O settings did the trick.

I’m having this problem but I am not getting a signal for my playback as well as the fact I can’t hear it. However, I can record and hear myself in the mic just fine. Only once I try to play it back I get no signal or sound. Any help?
Are you trying to playback in the same track you are recording in? If so, maybe try moving it to a new track.
How come my computer doesn't have an io setting
I got a M audio M track solo audio interface And I can only hear the track from one year on playback in ProTools?
Under Setup > I/O do you have a mono (1 channel) output instead of stereo (2 channel)? Is this a brand new interface? Might be a hardware problem.

I use a Focusrite for my input and my monitors just use an aux cable from my computer's out. Whenever I change the playback engine to Built-in output, I get sound just fine, but trying to re arm the track it gives me a message saying that it doesn't have both an input and output assigned. When I go to relink my Focusrite, it isn't available as an option.
Ok well I think I see the issue. Right now you are trying to input from your Focusrite and output via your computer (that aux cable), which you cannot do. Simply get some speaker cables and go OUT of your Focusrite and IN to your monitor speakers. This will cause your Focusrite to be both your Input (microphone plugged in for example) and Output (monitor speakers) and from there you will just need to make sure your I/O settings and track settings are proper, like in the video. Make sense?

Yes, did you try to engage Input Monitor by clicking the "I" near the Solo / Mute buttons on the track you are recording on?
Also if you’re getting an error such as 6117…shut Pro Tools down, reconnect your interface, open a new session with a different bitrate (ex. If it’s set at “48kHz” switch it to “44.1kHz”) then try opening your session again

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you check I/O, Playback Engine and the output of the track? All seem good?
I’m having the same issue, my input and outputs say input 1-2 output 1-2 for my audio track that I imported my beat on. Then on my vocal track it says input 1 output 1-2. I’m thinking it’s something with my input on my vocal track, but I looked on my I/o setup and did everything you said and still nothing. It even says the correct input in there “input 1-2” but for some reason I’m only getting input 1 and input 2 as a interface option

Just going to highlight another solution (If you simply hear nothing after fixing a 6117 error) Check the output list in asio4all and there should be some more boxes to check, mix and match untill it works.

hi, i cant hear plugins like sound paint and (i have m audio i manged to record but (cannot hear anything on the lap but i was recording but now it doesnt make a sound ,went everywhere and set up right bits channels everything and yet nothing but with revalver the plug it does work and i can hear even

I need to create a new path in the input tap but the “New Path” button is in highlighted. How can I enable it to do what I need to do to have an input for an audio track?

I still can't get any sound to come out from plugins. Once I exit pro tools and open a plugin on its own I get audio, bit weird...
What do you mean "sound to come out from plugins" are you adding a plug in on a track and effecting an audio clip? Or do you mean some kind of plug in that is creating sound itself?
Dude! I really need your help, I can’t hear my audio no matter what I do. The beat plays fine but I can’t hear audio I recorded. Or my mic now for that matter, literally didn’t do anything between my last session & this one.
It isn’t I/O, nothing is solo & nothing is muted. The track with my vocal & mic has the same audio output as my beat & I hear the beat fine. Protools actually isn’t even recognizing any other track other than the beat. Like there’s no sound being registered into the DAW. I have no clue what’s going on & it’s killing my inspiration / creativity. This is bs. Please help if you can.

Are you using a template in Pro Tools? Audio Interface? Sound card?
really didnt help. everyone always says it is the playback engine. Well my output and input are correct, the audio drivers on my shoddy UM2 are updated.. I cannot even record and I have a project due in like 6 days and I have 2 guitar tracks and a bass track to record. between 3 other courses work. ASIO4ALL really doesnt help me either as it seems to reduce my sample rate to 64 or 0 which is not what the device says it is at.
(and yea, I am not on apple computers, a W10 based device mainly for gaming).

PLEASE HELP I have two options on my PC when it comes to playback engine. Realtek Digital Output and Speakers. Only speakers produce sound out of any application, yet PRO TOOLS playback engine defaults to Realtek Digital Output and no matter how many times i try and change it to my speakers IT WONT CHANGE! How do i fix this its so stupid i change the playback engine to speakers, click ok, pro tools restart and when it boots back up the playback engine is still Realtek Digital Output?!
Unfortunately I think that might be beyond my pay grade, I think the Realtek Digital Output is a sound card? That might be causing the problem. If you have the ability to get an audio interface that might be easier. Apologies, this sounds like a hardware/sound card issue.

Im currently using a scarlet solo on my pro tools - krks - and a baby blue bottle - everything has been fine the past week since acquiring everything. My friend came over gave me a template and it enhanced my experience; and now as I’m getting good at everything, I can’t hear ANY vocals from any of my previous recordings or the new one I was doing when the error occurred. I tried all three methods and none of those have worked for me.
I’ve restarted my MacBook and everything - nothing works. Please help at your earliest convenience! Thanks in advance

Nice video, question... I have 12 tracks and they are all playing good except for 2 of them. For some odd reason out of tha blue, tha bass line sounds like a ( zapping ) sound if that makes sense. It's only those 2 tracks, any idea why ? Thanks

I’m using NCH MixPad and I don’t have playback of recorded tracks. I have a Line 6 HD500X Pedalboard hooked up but my outputs are grayed out. What do I need to do?
Are you trying to used the pedalboard as an audio interface? Or do you have another interface that you are plugging the pedalboard into, like a Focusrite for example? What version of Pro Tools do you have, Pro Tools First by chance?
After these steps didn't work for me I opened Pro Tools as an administrator and that fixed my issue.
I have a question, I am having a problem hearing sound. I have my interface linked up to my protools and have krk monitors plugged in and I can hear everthing fine when I watch videos or listen to beats ive made in MPC beats. But I am trying to record some guitar in pro tools and I cant get anything to come out. I can play the guitar and I see it show up on the levels but after I try to record something I dont hear it. I cant even hear the click track but I see them all on the levels like they are playing. Do you know what I can do to fix this?

Is this only happening when you are in the middle of recording? Meaning, when you hit record you see waveforms but cannot hear? If so you can turn on "input monitor" which is the "I" next to record and it will turn green. This will allow you to hear what you are recording, while you are recording. You can also try to have a "record" only track, then after the recording drag the clip into a "non-record-enabled-track" for playback. Are you on a PC? Sometimes the ASIO driver monopolizes the sound output of your machine and cannot output from multiple sources. Lastly, does anything output properly in Pro Tools at all? Can you bring in another sound and get it to work? Double check your playback engine and let me know, happy to keep trouble shooting.

I really need help with something... I am having issues getting a signal
to come directly from any track to my main 1-2 output. I have reset all
settings multiple times, but I can only get audio after routing it
through an AUX track, then to the 1-2 Output. If i go directly from one
audio track to the 1-2 Output the master fader shows no signal
whatsoever.
SO STUPID! So i fixed this issue by switching the master fader to another output and then switching it back to the original. wasted so much time lol

when I open pro tools it kills ALL sound on my computer, no wavs, no videos, no sound on anything. and of course the program itself is completely silent. tried setting the sound thing and the choices were windows sound and realtek asio but neither of them work either. it should work fine as soon as it is opened but it does not.
Yea Windows is a slightly different setup, I hear that Flex ASIO or ASIO 4 ALL will work but that should be true, that driver will take over your machine meaning only Pro Tools will be able to playback sound and not the rest of your machine.

I have signal through to my apollo from protools but my sound preferences volume bar is greyed out still and my play back engine is set universal audio and still theres no sound what would be the issue?
You mean the volume bar on your computer? That sounds normal for it to be greyed out as the audio interface (in your case the Apollo) should now take over control of master volume. Playback engine sounds good, what about the output of your track and I/O settings, is that setup properly to get to your Apollo? Sounds like you are getting sound meters to hit the Apollo. Just a Hail Mary here, do you have a mute button on the Apollo or is the volume turned down? Lastly, where does the sound go after the Apollo? Speakers? Headphones?
