Dan's Linked Supercrew Gets a One of a Kind Dash!

  • Dan is one of my favorites, & his truck is as well! The 97-03 F-150 Supercrew is a timeless, sanitary design. Building this platform into a prerunner always makes for a beautiful machine. Here we talk about the build as a whole and some details on how we went about constructing the all steel dash/instrument panel. We go in depth & cover some serious ground with design & layout.
Stay tuned, as a future in depth, multipart episode on this dash will be released on The Fab Diaries.

Thank you! For 20 years, I have had an offroad and a road car bouncing around in my head. I have no fab skills, just some engineering basics. I'm 48 years old, but I'm going to take some welding and drafting classes. Just so I'm ready to build when I retire. Thanks for the motivation!

You are not a fabricator, you are an artist who happens to fabricate. Crazy to think that even with all the skill and knowledge you have, there is still more you want to learn. Sheet metal forming is definitely a lost art. I made a bowl from a flat piece of aluminum at the Fab School and was definitely a great experience learning how to do it.

Amazing as always. My boy said, "Dad, I'll never be at that level of welding and fabrication" No, not with that mindset, you won't...Stick with it and absorb EVERYTHING your teachers and other's tell you, without criticism.. Even other people's work that isn't, "that level". Because you learn from EVERYONE, even if their fab and welding skills aren't as "beautiful" their mind and ideas may be just as amazing. And it's ok if he never ends up being as amazing as some doing this work, he'll still have the knowledge of it and is amazing at so many other things.

What helped me in beginning metal forming is making "molds" out of wood to shape the metal around. It's easy to sand into complex shapes and then just start forming the metal around it. After a couple, it becomes almost an organic process. Like it was meant to have those curves and flow.
