Long's Peak is part of the front range of Colorado, which includes five other 14ers. Because of their close proximity to Denver they are very popular. I know all people bagging 14ers want to get these early, my advice would be go during the week and skip the weekends, if you can. If you don't enjoy being around hundreds of other people doing what you're attempting, find a different activity. There are a lot of challenging 13ers in the state that few people go to.

my ex-wife and i climbed long's peak back in 1997, but we backcountry camped like a mile from the trail, so it was much easier to get an early start. i think we started like 3am and summitted around 10am? lol, that boulder field on the way back was TOUGH AF. it seemed to take forever to get through walking on tired ankles and feet, plus i had a terrible headache from the altitude, and a nice sunburn. definitely the hardest hike i've ever done, but a great experience i'll never forget. 😫👍

Awhile back I was obese. I couldn't even walk around the block. I lost over a hundred pounds through diet and exercise. It took me almost 2 years to get myself into shape in order to climb this mountain, but that was my goal. I live near Denver and this was my first fourteener. I had many other afterwards

My father, brother and I are about to do the keyhole route and attempt the summit at the end of this month. I’m quite nervous but the excitement overpowers that feeling. We’re going to be taking it extremely slow. Hopefully the weather will hold for us!

nice short video. Be aware that the last part--from the Narrows onward faces to the east. Therefore, you are unable to see approaching weather. One of the two climbs I did of Longs Peak, had clouds that moved in suddenly. The clouds were so thick, I could not see the next bullseye on the route. Visibility was only about 5-6 feet. I was uncertain where to go, and actually wandered a bit off the route (which is in a very steep area). Fortunately, there was no wind or precipitation. But it took perhaps 30 minutes for things to clear up enough for me to find the trail again. It was a bit scary during that time and I was alone in that area. The scramble to the top is quite doable, but it is scary because you are quite exposed and do not want to slip. Otherwise, it is one of classic, and truly one of the most memorable of the 14ers in Colorado. It is also amazing that the top of Longs Peak is a relatively large, boulder plain.

They're constantly telling people its dangerous, risking their lives for recovery and then some douche comes along saying "Nah, they're wrong. It's easy " they're the fools who end up hurt, and who shouldn't be allowed on the mountain. I never see Natives downplaying Longs.

@@randil3208Agree. What’s challenging about Long’s is its nonstop concentration and boulder scrambling after the keyhole. Although you’re not on the edge of a cliff the whole time, you are close to the edge of a good slope that doesn’t stop for hundreds of feet. Nothing to stop you or slow you down. Proceed with great caution and you’ll make it. Don’t forget that it is a very long round trip and very taxing.

Many years ago a friend of mine climbed this mountain by himself and made it up to the keyhole before he got socked in with fog. He said he couldn't see more than ten or twenty feet in front of him, and that he basically had to crawl back down the mountain after becoming disoriented. This, after I told him to please always tell someone when he was going on a hike alone, which he didn't because he was 22 and an idiot.
Anyway he lived, but he's still dumb. I think I'll remind him of that the next time I see him.
