I’ve often said that Chester was the voice of those who felt they didn’t have one, and his words were the words that couldn’t be spoken. I always listen to them when I have a lot of pent up emotion, like I’m channeling my emotion to that “voice of the voiceless” as a way of releasing it without having my own outburst.
Hearing this song after he passed really resonates that much more, hearing those words and his vocal delivery of them hits harder knowing how real those words were to him.

I swear I cry every time I hear his voice. I was a diehard Linkin Park fan when I was younger. I still kept up with them but I didn’t listen as avidly as I did when I was younger. The day Chester died I felt like I’d lost a best friend that I didn’t know was struggling. It’s sad that that had to happen for me to revisit their music but it’s like a sharp knife knowing that my children will never get to enjoy them performing like I have. Love all of you that read this. If you need help or someone to talk to I’ll be here. Stay safe everybody!

Hearing Chester sing always brings mixed emotions for me. Linkin Park was supposed to be coming to Boston, and I was planning to go see them...unfortunately we lost Chester not long before that. It would have been my first concert ever, as I had been saving my first concert experience for Linkin Park. Whether it was Hybrid Theory, Meteora, Minutes to Midnight, I enjoyed all of it. I also enjoyed Chesters work with Grey Daze and Dead by Sunrise. Same goes for Mike Shinoda with Fort Minor, and what he has produced under his own name.
Chester felt like he was speaking to us. He helped many of us through tough times Thank you Chester, we miss you.

When I heard this. I thought. Awesome, a new LP song with Chester.. So cool.
But when the moment came and he started to sing, it just hit so differently than I expected.
I can listen to there old music just fine. But for some reason a new song with him just hit so differently than I thought.
His voice just made me shiver right away, I did not expect it to hit in that way.. And the fact it was so unexpected make it so much more.
And the moment he sings. " I am tired " there is a break in his voice, its like its pulled out. its just.
Amazing song. and I can't put words on it, but what ever I am feeling, I really did not think I would feel listening to this song when I heard it the first time.
An other things after hearing it many times now.
When the " I tried to keep this pain inside, but I will never be alright "
Looking back there are many of the things he sung where people say, well he was telling us.
But those lines are not like that, it was more a. He feared this, and it turned out to be true.
Suffering from chronical mental illness is something you fight your entire life, and the best you can do is fight so it does not effect others. But you know inside you will never get to be alright.
All the things others live for, is something you can never have, and there is not anything you can do about it. When you live it, that thought is the most heavy thing you carry. No matter what, your life will always be that, I will never be alright. Nothing can change it, no amount of love, wealth, power.
I can have everything I ever desired, and I will still not be alright.
Linkin Park always meant a lot to me, I was a teenager when they made it big. And they made so many amazing songs. And the influence they had on music is almost unrivaled, so many modern bands was and is influences by LP..
I do have an emotional favorite song though.
I have "some" tattoos, and I have designed them myself, with the old Norse way of being used to tell my own story with them.
So I do not have things from songs, or poems, or pictures whatever.
Other than one thing. LP have a song called " This is my December " Not one of there most known, but I listened to it a lot.
And I have in my tattoo the " This is my December " as a ode to LP. the only connection I have to any lyrics or band, so it means something.
It also made sense because I am born in December, so it still tells that story. plus other connections to December.
But for that reason I would say that is the most important LP song for me, can't say if its my favorite.

I saw Linkin Park at the USF Sundome in 2004. It was a great show!
The setup was unique. The security barrier was formed in a triangle. The audience couldn't crowd directly in front of the stage. Instead, two mosh pits formed, one to stage left, one to stage right.
It made for a calmer show.;)

During their heyday I was not tuned into most contemporary music. I had heard of Linkin Park but had never heard any of their recordings until now. First I listened to the music first sans video (but of course with Beth's observations), then watched the video, and only then read about the song, the band, and the backstory. The song, lyrics, and delivery stand up well on their own. The video adds another layer of depth to the experience. Knowing the backstory furthers colors one's perception.
A somewhat analagous situation: I bought and listened to Bowie's Blackstar before I watched the companion videos and before his death just 2 or days thereafter. The videos and a review of the lyrics in the light of his unexpected and premature passing made the songs all the more impactful. In both cases one can only wonder what more each have done in the years ahead. Let's be thankful that their music will live on.

I do enjoy your insights into vocal music, both the technical and emotional aspects of it.
I don't know if you will, but I'd really like to hear your take on The Wellermen singing Misty Mountain (from The Hobbit movie trilogy): ua-cam.com/video/f1Vkh1Iy5IA/v-deo.html

Wow talk about a crap place to pause the song; right on the most heartbreaking intonation for "But I'm tired"

When I listen to ballads like this I can't help but compare them with the ballads of the '50s-'60s-'70s and find today's ballads sadly lacking in melody. In the past the lyrics expressed the sadness and pain but the beautiful melodies offered healing and redemption. "Jealous Guy" by John Lennon is a perfect example. The melody gives you a safe place to experience the pain and deal with it. That is the hallmark of most of the greatest ballads of the past.
