On this day in 1963 {June 10th} Ray Stevens performed "Harry the Hairy Ape" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand', he also also the guest host for this episode of 'Bandstand'...
At the time "Harry the Hairy Ape" was in it's first week on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, it was at position #70, four weeks later it would peak at #17 {for 2 weeks} and it spent nine weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #14 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
Between 1961 and 1979 the Georgia native had twenty seven records on the Hot Top 100 chart, four made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Everything Is Beautiful" for 2 weeks in 1970 and "The Streak" for 3 weeks in 1974
Besides his two #1 records, his two other Top 10 records were "Ahab, the Arab" {#5 in 1962} and "Gitarzan" {#8 in 1974}...
Mr. Stevens, born Harold Ray Ragsdale, will celebrate his 81st birthday this coming January 24th, 2020...

The first time I've ever heard this song. I LOVE IT !!!!

The song first appeared in 1963 as a single. It was also on the This Is Ray Stevens album for Mercury. He recut the song and Ahab the Arab for his 1969 Gitarzan album for Monument. This sounds like that version. He recut both songs again for his Encyclopedia of Recorded Comedy Music.
