Left AIC Pattern versus Pelvic Orientation: They Aren't the Same Thing

  • One of the greatest confusions among viewers of this channel is understanding the difference between a left AIC patterned pelvis as defined by the Postural Restoration Institute and pelvis orientation.
    A left AIC patterned pelvis has a left side of the pelvis, the left ilium, positioned anteriorly compared to the right ilium. So the left side is in an anterior pelvic tilt and the right side is in a posterior pelvic tilt.
    This is not the same thing as pelvic orientation. Orientation refers to the relative position of something. The vast majority of humans have a preference for orienting their body to the right. In fact, the preference for rightward orientation and dominance is built into the human body.
    Many people who feel like they have a right AIC patterned pelvis, which they don't, are likely confused by the perceived orientation of their pelvis.
    Hey there, my name is Neal Hallinan.

    My pelvis twists to the left. I put more weight on my left leg. My right hip is forward and tilted anteriorly. If I put more weight on my right leg, my right hip is even more forward. I have more external rotation in my right hip. There is no position in which my right hip is not forward. My left ribs sit lower and are tight. My right shoulder is up and back. When I lie on my left side I feel all of the intercostal muscles on the left stretching because they are contracted all day. I have left shoulder and neck pain with extremely limited external rotation of my left shoulder. When I lie down, my neck leans to the right and turns to the left. I have nerve compression in my neck and mid-back on the left side.

    LEFT AIC/LEFT ORIENTATION. You cleared up alot for me with this video. I keep my left leg straight and right leg slightly bent. Does my left orientation mean that I should do anything differently to fix my left AIC as compared to someone who is Left AIC and Rigjt oriented? Thanks bro your videos are legit and uniquely helpful

      Hello. Without examining you I can't say for certain, but in general I don't suspect you should do anything differently. If you "lock out" your left knee, it means you are compensating for the inability to "shift" into your left hip appropriately during left stance phase of walking.
      Classic left AIC pattern and compensation.
      If you can't shift into your left hip (which means the hip has to move to the left and back) with the appropriate muscles, you'll move your knee backwards instead (knee extension) or your lower back (low back extension) and probably both. At some point the compensation will break you down and cause pain.

    i have as you said Left AIC Pattern and that caused me condromalacia on the left knee and quad tendinopathy on both knees so i wanted to ask if there are any exercises to do to not have those problems on the knees, i also have a bit of valgus legs and flat feet

    I but what about the sacrum and the piriformis, in my case the sacrum is pointing towards the right and the right piriformis its contracted, isnt that a solid sign?

    Hi Neal,
    But what if yes I’m a left aic and yes my pelvic is oriented to the right but my right side is the more forward one? And the one that is more downward..
    And yes not only while standing but also at rest when I’m completely in supine resting.
    Ps: I’m also suffering from a taller left leg currently.
    And I also have a history of right side hemiparesis, I lost sensation on so many areas on my right side including the trunk and the abdominal area.
    Only due to an emotional trauma..
    I’m only 26.
    I guess after this the patterns started kicking in.
    My sensation has recovered but it definitely affected the muscle mass
    So could that be the cause of the forward pelvic on the right side?
    I would really appreciate a reply,
    I really want to reach out for a pri specialist and get this all of my chest but I don’t live in the US.

    I think that people confuse this because in left AIC pattern right pelvis internal rotated and right ASIS look more forward compare left Asis. Left Asis in left AIC patter Left Asis look away.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      Well, the right ASIS moves backwards when the right ilium is in internal rotation (adduction, extension, and internal rotation). How it "looks" when someone is standing upright can be deceiving.

    very useful explanation, that also means there is no creature because of this big Bug of humans, but my question is why do we get pain and majority of people Not,
    i have checked my hamstring during walking and the right side has much much bigger contact in compare to the left side, i slowly understand the concept after watching almost all your videos.

    Hi Neil,
    I have a question and I’m not sure if PRI talks about this or any of the exercises help this but I have navel displacement which is a condition more commonly known in Ayurvedic beliefs. Basically my bellybutton is pretty much shifted to the right. Do you know if this is a common symptom of Left AIC pattern (I have been diagnosed with jt) or else will have to seek help from another professional. I haven’t had any kids by the way which tends to also happen with mothers I’m just wondering because if the PRI exercises do not help with this it’s pretty discouraging seeing as I’ve been trying to correct my LEFT AIC pattern for months now

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      If the belly button is oriented to the right because of the pelvis and lumbar spine being oriented to the right, then I suppose it could be corrected through restoring neutrality of the pelvis. Quite honestly there are so many potential contributors to all this that without having more knowledge about your situation, I really can't give any good information. Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like.

    So if I am truly left aic I am absolutely oriented to the left so how can I fix that

  • @wealth1ness

    Could you talk about what PRI means when they say being a "pusher" vs a "puller"?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      I guess it depends on the context, but perhaps you could say that people use hip flexors to pull them forward instead of glutes/hamstrings to push them forward.

    I stood on a dr schols machine at Walmart yesterday. I had high pressure on my right heel. I’m thinking that’s prob the reason for having it band syndrome in my right knee. I’m also like a half inch shorter on my right. My right hip is lower then my left. And my right shoulder is lower then left.
    Does this sound like L aic?

      RumTyme, I'm a PRI client and I have those same symptoms - I stand heavily on my right foot, my R hip is visually lower, and my R shoulder is visually lower. I have a L AIC pattern but my pelvis is rotated to the left. My therapist calls this "Right oriented (due the L AIC pattern) and left rotated".

    Please help Neal. So is it normal for someone with Left AIC to have a lot of pain on the right side? I have chronic tightness in my right hip, lots of pain on the bottom of my right foot, hamstring and lower right abdomen when standing. As well as chronic pelvic pain. My left hip is higher then my right

  • @Silentpartner2176

    Thanks for this video. This does explain more for me. Since we will always be left AIC as humans, how much can we expect PRI to correct?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      Because it restores our body to a normal asymmetry. We will always be right dominant, but when our normal asymmetry becomes to asymmetrical, that's the problem. We just need to restore ourselves to normal asymmetry.

    • @Silentpartner2176
      @Silentpartner2176 4 роки тому

      Neal Hallinan I’m guessing normal asymmetry should get us out of pain correct?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      @@Silentpartner2176 yes. But that implies that appropriate strength is created in the pelvic musculature so that we can maintain perfect asymmetry.

    • @Silentpartner2176
      @Silentpartner2176 4 роки тому

      Neal Hallinan I see. So we should never expect to get to full symmetry correct?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому +1

      @@Silentpartner2176 I don't think so. Humans simply aren't symmetrical. Especially as we get older and have more insults and injuries upon our body.

  • @shakilhaque1822

    So breaking out of the left aic pattern and allowing the pelvis to shift will have a domino effect in "fixing" orientation?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  Рік тому

      It has to be the first domino to all, but there is certainly more that usually has to be worked on.
