- Relax and drift off to sleep as I flip through a 1979 Radio Shack catalog and comment on the items within.
My videos are best enjoyed using headphones or earbuds.
This is video number 543 of this channel.
The videos on my UA-cam channel portray some of the typical day-to-day activities that I do for relaxation. This video was produced with relaxation in mind and hopefully has some ASMR qualities. Too much stress is harmful to your well-being and in today’s fast-paced world, stress management is more important than ever, and so I hope this ASMR video acts as a stress reliever for those watching and a sleep-aid for anyone having a difficult time falling asleep.

Hearing your voice makes me so happy. I’ve been going through a lot recently. My sister just passed from cancer and it’s really getting to me. Listening to you helps calm me. Like sitting next to a cozy fire. I hope to find a man with a voice like yours to fall asleep to someday. Edited: (I found one he’s very sweet his name is Chris.)
I can't tell you how much I love listening to your voice, both soothing and calming as well as stimulating at the same time don't ask me how, you definitely have a gift in your voice which would be perfect for an audiobook reader

I've noticed a old/expensive tech was just built way better. If you actually opened your devices up, they'd be so precisely, intricately and masterfully designed. People took pride in their inventions.

Thanks for the blast from the past. I remember ALWAYS stopping by the Radio Shack every time we were at the mall. I had forgotten about the room of speakers that each store had until you mentioned "pressing the buttons" at the store.
I watch many asmr channels on UA-cam. When I absolutely can not sleep I can always count on the relaxing asmr channel. This video was delightful. It deeply relaxed me and then I heard a kitty cat meow and a smile slowly spread across my face. The cat only improved the video sir. 😀
My mom had a Realistic system back in the early 80s... I made a LOT of mix tapes with it. The tape deck had a record level so you could get the saturation of the tape JUST right for the music you were recording (and also eliminate start and stop noise)... And I do miss those diamond lattice wood speakers. Crazy to think everything in here costs 4x as much in today's dollars! But yeah, this whole catalog brings back so many memories! Thanks, awesome video!

I have one of these in mint condition. It is a true pleasure to listen to. Something about the amplification/speakers playing the classical music channel feels almost healing

Kind of interesting to see that despite housing prices and car prices being so sky high nowadays, there *are* things that have gotten a LOT cheaper since then! 230 dollars gets you 100 watts per channel now, at 0.2 percent THD. That would've been only 55 dollars back then, wow.

We ALWAYS wore formals to listen to records at home.
My grandfather had one of these while setups next to his favorite armchair in the family room with all his cassettes and records organized next to the system.

I miss RadioShack especially finding electronic components and trying to build something
One of my brothers had a Pioneer receiver from 1976 or so up until 2020. It was replaced with an Echo Studio. Another brother had a 20 watt Pioneer and some RS speakers.
The nice part about the RS speakers is that they had real veneer cabinets so even if they sounded horrible they were nice furniture.
I remember Radio Shack, fun to watch your take on a vintage catalogue from them!
Great video going down memory lane, 79 was also the height of the Boombox Era, where Sanyo, panasonic and JVC ruled these electronics had character, class and power, again Great video

Arthur Fiedler actually passed away in July of 1979 the same year this magazine was released.
As a teenager in the 90's, I played around with my dad's stereo system and record player, which resembled some of these and played some of his records, the Beetles, Buffalo Springfield. In the digital age all of this bulky equipment seems a bit funny now to the average music listener, but in truth, the sound quality was far better than today's tinny sounding "airpods". You can actually feel the music on one of those systems and it's a much more "live" experience. That said, hard to beat blue tooth ear buds when you're on a hike or riding a bike for sheer portable convenience.
My dad has that exact stereo. It still works beautifully. Not sure how much he paid for it.
I still own a 1970's Radio Shack/Realistic stereo system. Realistic was actually made by Marantz.
Yes exactly, me too, I still have a Realistic stereo system (pg six of this catalogue "better" system) I bought with all the money I earned from a summer job back in 1980... and it keeps on sounding great. All the buttons work, even all the lighting. I didn't know they were made by Marantz.
That $599 receiver would be about $2200 now. Interesting how the prices for a ‘midfi’ system have stayed consistent despite all the new technology.

My older brother bought me those Nova pro headphone for $34.95 for christmas in '79. They sounded great. 20:50
First, your videos are amazing. I'm a big fan. Second, the sound quality on this video was lower that others. It wasn't balanced in my AirBuds and the volume was kind of low. I don't mean to criticize. Just giving feedback. And the issues could be on my end.

Absolutely lovely video. I think the format works very well. I have never understood what an 8-track is or how it works. Do they hold eight tracks? Are they solid or made with tape? Such a mystery lol. Thanks again for another fantastic video.
8 track has 4 channels. Each channel is stereo so 4x2=8 individual tracks on a continuous loop of magnetic tape much like a cassette uses except wider to accommodate all those tracks. It’s all encased in a cartridge that you just shove into the player and it begins playing which ever track is lined up with the play head. Punching the channel button repositions the play head to the next of 4 channels (makes a nice “ker-chunk” sound when it does that. Search for 8 track on my channel.

my grandpa was an east la gang member in the 60s-80s and would steal stereos from cars and from homes and other stuff . He regrets it now

$500 is about $2,072 in todays money. I couldn’t imagine spending that much on just a receiver 🤯🤯🤯🤯. Truly unbelievable. And I thought $150 on mine was expensive. Sheesh

Excellent speakers those 3s are. You probably already know that a new Dovedale model has been released that was inspired by the Dovedale III speakers that you have.

That $599 receiver would cost $2480.34 today. That $1329 system would cost $5494.40 today...
A 1979 $1 in 1979 would equal $4.13 in today's money... (23¢ today would've been worth a dollar back in '79)

I have a realistic sta-2000 from 1978 and worked great until it died a few months back
i have a unit that looks like what you showed in the thumbnail and used it as my main unit when i recorded an album probably a decade ago when the thing was probably 30 years old...
i found mine for free when someone was throwing it away.. i picked it up lickety split..
Reminds me of the kinds my grandpa always used to bring down and listen to the weather on 😊
