I feel so justified that Chelsea also notices how awful Google is rn. It picks one word from your search now and just focuses on current events to show you instead of actually searching your entire prompt, SO frustrating to do research with and I thought I was going crazy

I love that Gus' entire fear of the demon is based on The Exorcist, not any kind of religious conviction. It's only appropriate that his head gets twisted around. I loved pretty much everything about the movie (save the AI and a few effects), but Carmichael Haig had to be my favorite part. Just a perfect depiction of a guy who starts out as amusing but becomes insufferable by the end.

Speaking of the Civil War posters, I find it so crazy that the biggest punishment A24 received for that was a slap on the wrist, while Late Night was getting review bombed on Letterboxd (To be fair, the movie currently has an average rating of 3.5), as well as people threatening to pirate it. It just goes to show that people will still have biases for certain things, regardless of the controversy.
Also, I found the reveal of Minnie through the frame-by-frame playback to be really creepy. There was just something about the way she stood out that made me uncomfortable.

    • @Cologram

That’s not entirely true. The issue with Late Night with the Devil’s generative AI usage is that it’s *in the goddamn movie* as opposed to Civil War’s usage which is only in the marketing (as far as we know). Not trying to start an argument! I could be wrong but that’s what appears to be happening with these movies.

    *Spoiler break*
Regarding the last question-'Why have the demon killed?'
It hadnt clicked for me until something yall mentioned earlier in the podcast; Lily was bred to be sacrificed at thirteen, and she is thirteen now. Also the 'greatest sacrifice is yet to come' is talking about the present, not when its flashbacked to-
Jack is a follower of Abraxas, using a ritual dagger to sacrifice Lily at the appointed time. That was Abraxas goal the whole time.

I think I read it as chelsea did, where Jack made this deal not really knowing what he was going to have to "pay" and then his wife suddenly/randomly gets lung cancer, suffers and dies, and he maybe thinks it is bc of him but maybe he's not entirely sure. Then all this stuff happens and it's back to back like he's convinced now and maybe he thinks hes going crazy with this conspiracy, but he has no real time to sit and think it through since it's all happening so fast with no real break for him to think about it, so he is getting suspicious/paranoid/etc. And then it escalates as the movie goes on. That was my take and I feel like that's kind of what chelsea is getting at, maybe slightly different interpretation but on the same lines I believe.

Just a little note on Ghostwatch. It wasnt actually presented as real as the interstitial announcer did say something along the lines of it being fictional but anyone who tuned once the show had already started had no idea, cos it looked real and of course the show itself played it straight. So viewers were genuinely terrifed when it all goes wrong and the BBC had to deal with the anger. Great show and it started my love for horror. Another British horror themed show I'd recommend is Inside No 9. Think you guys would dig it.

I think this movie was good. I really enjoyed it and I feel like James and Chelsea did too. But we can all agree there was no place for AI generated imagery in this setting. They saved no time and no money, these images wouldn't have existed in the time period the movie took place. Anyone on the team could have made a more appropriate title card for the movie. The creators of Late Night will have to try not to take the palpable frustration in the art industry personally. The people upset about the use of AI generated imagery in entertainment will have to keep speaking out as loud as possible. The entertainment industry is one of the few industries where public opinion matters, and if the studio heads that allow the people I admire to eat and pay rent decide that AI generated imagery is more lucrative than lovingly rendered art, there will be less and less opportunities for people with personality and ideas. I hope you guys understand where the problem lies. With the companies becoming fabulously wealthy selling the ability to make "just good enough" pictures with an instantaneous turnover, not with this indie studio that used them one time for a couple of title cards.

This AI conversation was great and I'm glad that Chelsea also mentioned the Civil War posters cause I didn't see those and they look so silly to be coming from a company like A24. They also look so dead and dull so I'm glad that there are people who are approaching these companies with some disregard cause the use of these generated AI tools should have no place in film and stuff. It's lazy, it's ugly most of the time, and if we start settling for our films our pieces of art to have less than the utmost value in making the film than why make it at all? Why go through like 9/10 the effort and take a shortcut to get through the last 1/10?

  • @Flipperz74
    @Flipperz74 3 місяці тому +45

The movie itself is more than decent, I would even say great, so it's a damn shame that they included ANY AI imagery at all.
It frustrates me deeply that people are claiming the disdian for AI use in this movie is being blown out of proportion. People will say "it's ONLY three frames", or "it's such a small part that it doesn’t matter" but that's the exact point!
If it was such a miniscule detail, they could have easily removed those transition cards! If it was such a small section of the movie that contributed nothing to the story, why include them at all? In fact, the directors added those AI images AFTER the fact (a statement substantiated by the directors themselves), so it makes the inclusion of these images even more baffling.
I'm glad you guys addressed this issue and I definitely feel more in line with Chelsea's view. We shouldn’t let any filmmakers get away with AI "art" use, full stop. AI "art" is an affront to artists around the world. On top of depriving people in the film industry of job opportunities, it robs artists of the opportunity to contribute a piece of their mind and soul to a body of work.

Flo and Eddie rules! I always thought "Keep it Warm" would be the perfect track for a 70's period movie. The whole song is basically a status check on where culture was post 1960s, with references to the Beatles' Legal battles, Grace Slick's substance abuse, the Beach Boys experience with Transcendental meditation, and even the 1966 University of Texas Tower Shootings. I would classify Flo and Eddie as less a parody group, but more like Pop Savants, putting them closer to TMBG than Tenacious D. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the album "Keep it Warm" is on, Moving Targets. They also did the Skeet Surfing song from Top Secret, if you're familiar with that movie.

I’m so glad you’re actually covering this because I’ve seen so many people just decide to never talk about it anymore because of the AI thing.
With the AI thing, I fully agree that this conversation has to be done. But I think that we need to hold every single thing that blatantly uses AI to task, even if you think it’s thematically appropriate like Secret Invasion.
I will say that if the people behind the movie were telling the truth about the images being worked on post generation meaning it was used more as a tool, I can kind of appreciate what they were trying to do. Because of the nature of the movie, so many tools in the horror toolbox couldn’t be used. As we all know, AI imagery is just bizarre and often has a very uncanny feel to it. Maybe that weird feeling was what they wanted, an extra bit of unease to make the end land just that much more.
That said, I’m with Chelsea, just George Lucas this thing.
And I’m so glad you mentioned the production logo credit parade. It made me laugh so hard and I agree that Good Fiend was the best one.

I think the boycotting issue is rough because the principal behind it is important, but at the cost of a lot of hard work, time, and effort. Coming off of Chelsea's point, not everyone is as "online" like you guys and tbh, may not have really noticed or paid attention to those AI aspects or cared to the point that makes the "regular" person question it. Even consumers like myself who may be more tuned in than the average person...I feel like the use of AI in this instance is small fry compared to the larger conversation and talking about it to this level in this instance is like making a mole hill into a mountain that ultimately hurts those we're trying to protect.
