- BUILDING MY NEW IRONS!
I build a set of clubs that I’ll potentially use!
All stages of the build / construction shown! With an explanation of the reasons for each process!

A few tips from a master club builder of 30+ years. Don't ever crimp a shaft tip. If the fit isn't snug you can shim them or add glass micro beads to the epoxy as crimping the tip not only weakens it but also creates an ovaling widening the voids on two sides. Don't use excessive epoxy. It seems counterintuitive but more epoxy actually weakens the bond. Last but not least you swing weight during the dry fit before you epoxy. When you see tip weights in shafts from just about every OEM it's because they did a dry fit to dial in and match the swing weights for the set before they did the final build. If you don't do that you can end up all over the place and with heads that are too heavy or in need of excessive lead tape. On the plus side if the set doesn't work out you can easily sell those Nike sets for £300+ each and start over with some new irons.
I’m obviously aware the way I do some or most repairs isn’t how a master club fitter would do them and I do intend to go to a centre and film someone doing a series of repairs.
Take 4 😂;great insight Bernie how things are done keep these videos coming ⛳️
😂 take 5 and 6 Phil 😂
Very interesting!
Thanks my friend
Doctor Frankenstein and his new creation.
Cheers Ray 😂
great video -find this type of stuff fascinating - keep up the good work sir
Thanks for watching
Interesting. Miss Nike clubs- they made some good stuff.
Absolutely Michael!
If you are a bit of a gear head, getting comfortable pulling clubs apart and putting them back together is a game changer.
Mizuno are easy, Ping are hard, details matter and a cheap swing weight machine really, really helps with the end product.
Just a shame that loft and lie machines are so expensive!
You are right that loft and lie machines are so expensive Simon, I was looking at digital ones a few years ago and was shocked at the price. It’s hard to justify when they get so little use.
I’ve worked out how to measure at home… at least it lets you know if it is worth the trip to the club builder!
COYI 😊
Up the hammers!
Nice video lester. Just missed a shot of the finished product with dimmed lighting and music 😂
😂 😂 that can be arranged Ollie
Really interesting!. Could you do something on swing weights, and why it's so important?
I’ll definitely do that as a video soon
I like what I see and I have remembered to hit the subscribe button 😉
Cheers John you are a 🌟
I was already subscribed from the start of the channel to be fair and continue to enjoy the content. Just done my first re-grip, putter, using your vids as a reference point. Think it’s gone well 🤞
Love that John! Have you gamed it yet?
@@berniebarnesgolf gamed it today. All good. Putter face seemed to be pointing in the right direction in relation to the grip at address so I am considering it a success
Sounds good to me!
Captain Nudger’s new bats!! Excellent video Lester 👍
Cheers Craig! Like you I love tinkering!
Used to have a set of the Nike blades that preceeded the VR Forged. Loved em, but can't strike them anymore.
Enjoyed the video Lester, would've loved to see the part where you look/test/adjust the loft & lie. 👍🏻
I’m exactly the same mate! Would love to put the full set back in play but not good enough anymore unfortunately.
New subscriber Bernie after watching this video. I hope they irons perform for you after all your hard work
Cheers Paul
Thanks Paul and welcome to the channel!
When you lent in and said 'are you excited?' i thought you were going to say 'are you not entertained?' 😂
😂 😂 I missed a trick Tim! 😂 😂
Loved it - from someone who will never mess around with club building it had the right level of detail and interest to feed my golf nerdiness! Looking forward to the gapping session, but looks a good mix - keep up the great work.
Cheers John! Glad you enjoyed it, hope it inspires a few to give it a go!
Good Video Bernie.
Look forward to seeing the finished article 👍👍
Cheers Andrew and I’ll definitely do a follow up video.
I used to use those Nike VRs, bloody loved them
I’m not good enough to use them now Chris! 😂 beautiful looking though!
@@berniebarnesgolf me either, swing speed has decreased too much. As you say, things of beauty though
I gamed them from 2010-2014 I think. Absolutely loved them. Nothing better when you are swinging and striking it well.
@@berniebarnesgolf on the rare occasion they were caught flush they were incredible 💕
Those clubs will look amazing!!! Great insight on how it’s done with minimal tools. I would say paint the logos black or red or a combo.
Beautiful Mate!!!
I like that idea mate!
Nothing more fun than spending a day tinkering in a workshop! Hope the mixed set works well for you.
Thanks Andy! Find it quite therapeutic at times.
Enjoyed watching this, I recently listened to your podcast where you were Dan’s guest and it was good to hear you explain how some of your club fitting knowledge came about. Thanks David
Thanks David. Hopefully you see some dept to me 😂
Good video bernie when is part 2
I’ll get it filmed next week Bobby I promise.
looking forward to you building a new trophy cabinet with you winning more comps this year.
Unlikely Chris, but ever the optimist 😂
That look really interesting. Would love to do that stuff. The detail, the little thing would be awesome. What are you doing with the cobra heads?
I’ll probably end up reshafting the Cobra heads id imagine James, got a couple of sets of club heads I need to fix and potentially sell.
Along side the course vlogs club building videos are my favourite keep up the great work mate
Thanks Mike, got a few more of these style videos planned, hope you enjoy.
I enjoy tinkering with clubs from Time to time good luck with your Frankenstein set.
Cheers Max. I’ll definitely do a follow up video.
Love the video. Great content that I think fills a missing gap in UA-cam content
Cheers Shane! Hope you enjoy part 2.
Thanks for the look and see. Enjoyed it. Next step will be interesting. Cheers from Texas. 🤠⛳🏌️
Cheers for watching Michael! Will film part 2 this week.
I like the practicality and the presentation of the video Bernie, the cut aways help break it up. Nice one
Thanks my friend, hopefully you will notice improvements as the vlogs / videos progress.
Build all my own bats, it’s simple.
Love that Timmy!
I usually put a little epoxy at the tip of the shaft before installing the ferrule, that way it will not loosen in the future.
Good tip Robert.
Nicely done, Bernie! Hope the clubs help get you down to scratch soon!
Cheers Howie! Update on the progress or non progress soon!
When’s part 2 😂. Well done sir,you just taught me well
Glad you found it beneficial Jeremy
That's a cracking set of clubs Lester definitely something I'd be happy with
Thanks John! Hope you enjoy the follow to video too!
Looking good Lester.
First round for me today since November. Played OK.
Let's hope that the mighty Hammers turnup tonight!
Stay safe and thanks
Great that you’ve got on the course David! I’m not holding much hope for the hammers tonight! But watching it nevertheless 😂
Great video Lester, you’ve made the process look easy. Enjoyed the content my friend !!!
Thanks Jeff! More to come I promise. Thanks for watching.
Hi Lester. Good job. The only thing I would recommend is using glass shafting beads in the glue, to prevent the shaft from being "walled/cocked" in the hosel.
That’s interesting, I’ve not heard of or seen anyone do that. I’ll look into it, thanks mate.
@@berniebarnesgolf yeah..they are very fine glass beads... you add just a wee bit into the glue and it makes it so the shaft can't get a dry bond on one side of the hosel.. or tilted in the hosel. Then you don't have to squeeze a shaft if it is a bit loose when dry fitting... when the glue is applied it is a little gritty, and snugs the fit up and stays in place until dried. Cheers mate.
I do occasionally use wood chippings to thicken the glue.
Great video. Very interesting. I love the fact you are doing something completely different to everyone else.Great job!
Thanks Jonathan, always wanted to make different types of content to try and keep the channel interesting and watchable.
Very good Bernie well presented club repair video . Your very good at your job . Hope the clubs all play well and you have a great season with them .
Cheers Jeff! Hope you have a good golfing season too.
@berniebarnesgolf Bernie I'm just getting back playing after my knee replacement. Went up the range yesterday and just hit a few irons which was really good so hopefully will be able to start playing soon 😊
Nice and steady mate!
I really enjoyed that. Very creative approach.
Thanks my friend, there will be a follow up video to this one in the next few weeks.
Great video Bernie, really informative and interesting. I feel I could undertake this process myself now that you have explained it. Many thanks. Paul
No problem Paul. Maybe start on one old club and see what you can do. It is quite addictive.
@@berniebarnesgolf thanks for the advice Bernie. One question I have, can I re-glue a loose ferrule? I have one loose on an iron that is driving me mad!
Yeah. A little superglue around the bottom rim of the ferrule and push it down against the iron head.
A little glue around the bottom of the ferrule and push it down against the iron head.
Great video. Really interesting to see all the different steps involved.
Thanks my friend. Glad you enjoyed it.
Good video 👍. I’m still using my Nike Vapor Pro Combos and it nice to see Nike clubs still being used 👍
Think Tony Finea is still using some Nike clubs too John. We are in good company.
You must have a room full of clubs, love the Nike irons. The question is is the old Ping 2 iron back in the bag !
I do Patrick! 😂 I do have a clear out and sell some of my equipment every now and again. 😂 2 iron will probably come out in the summer when there’s a bit more run in the ball.
Love it 😊😊
Cheers Dave!
Nice job Lester, hope all is good with you. Hopefully, now the weather is now on the change, we'll see you out and about getting that HC down, have a good season buddy.
Cheers Colin! Had a few bad scoring rounds over the last month, but Wednesday was more promising. Hope you are well and getting plenty of golf in!
Well that's a waste of a great set of irons...Please stick those heads in the post up here Lester, they'll replace my 2008 King Cobra Pro MB's very nicely 😉
Love this content Lester, quick question on it though...why not rip the shafts out of the Sub70's?
😂 I can always put the clubs back to the way I found them Kent 😂 my sub70 clubs have graphite shafts in, so swing weight would be all wrong.
@@berniebarnesgolf You could have counter balanced them to get the swing weights to something that you could use...and also got content from that exercise 😉😉😉
Aside: I love the outtakes you run at the ends 👍
Yeah I could do that, maybe an idea for another video. I will do a video on the swing weight of these clubs and loft / lies etc soon.
Do you check the swing-weight of the clubs, Bernie?
I will show that in a future video Paul.
Enjoyed watching a master at work
You are too kind! 😂 wouldn’t call myself that 😂
Great how to Bernie, you make it look easy.
Been messing around with clubs for 30 years Dave, one of my passions.
Loved this video Bernie. Very well put together 👍
Thanks for watching Charlie.
Great video Lester.
Random but do you have time to book me in to check my lofts and possibly adjust for me sometime in May? I'm also open to shaft change so maybe a couple hours assessment perhaps. I live in Plymouth currently away until May 6th. Cheers, if you are too busy no worries, perhaps you or Dan can recommend someone with a loft and lie machine near me? Not currently a member anymore so I don't have the option of using a club pro etc....
I've edited this, it made no sense before. Sorry
I’m sure I do David. I’m away for a couple of weeks, but May should be good for me.
great video Lester, really interesting watching this. looking forward to the next episode plus also when you get to use them in vlogs or comps
Thanks Jason! I’ll film a round with them soon and need to do part 2 (and maybe part 3) with the clubs. Thanks for sharing the content on your instagram, means a lot.
👍
Random I know 😂
Really enjoyed the video great set of clubs Lester
Cheers Mick! Some follow up videos planned too!
Quality video, enjoyed it!
Cheers John
Really great insight. Looking forward to the paint fill video
Cheers David! There will be potentially several parts to this series!
Great job bud, nice choice of irons as well, well done video, kept em coming
Thanks for commenting and watching Dave. More to come I promise.
Great video and good content
Cheers Gary! More to come in part 2!
Lester you have to go claret & blue paint on them.. COYI ⚽️⚒️
I don’t want to ruin the clubs Duncan 😂
Evening Lester, keep up the good work and the instructive videos. 👍😀⚒⚒⚒
Good evening my friend! Thanks for watching.
@@berniebarnesgolf my pleasure, I enjoyed learning something new. 👍⚒️⚒️⚒️
Up the hammers!
Good job Bernie - I hope the irons work out for you.
Cheers Mark! I’ll game them next week and video some of it!
Great video Bernie while it looks easy there’s a few bits to remember and set lye and loft it that much harder with out certain bits of equipment, looking forward to the next video
Absolutely David! It was a project I wanted to do and share with you all. There’s a part two as well.
@@berniebarnesgolf excellent 👌 Bernie I will admit I love learning new things and then trying them out while I still can(hands not what they used to be),poxy arthritis it’s crap when you used your hands all your working life(certainly no pen pusher) lol
I’m sorry to hear that David. I know how you feel I have a similar issue with my feet
Wow. That was great to watch. To have the confidence to do that, incredible.
Me, I just thought, that’s a waste of 3 decent sets of irons. You did make it look easy, not showing the harder graft, 😂
I can always put them back together Andrew 😂 which I might 😂
Love the videos Bernie! Like the idea of building a set of irons for what you like giving that you have the knowledge...only concern is the swing weight...how will you go about getting the swing weight the same across the iron set?...
Keep up the good work pal. Love the vids
Thanks Luke. The swing weight element will be included in the next part of the video.
Great vlog. I play with a mixture of old ping g10 and Taylor made irons if they play well keep them.
Absolutely Phil! That’s an interesting mixture, but if it works as you say stick with it!
Great video mate really like the black shafts might be an option.keep up the good work mate looking forward to seeing how you play with them
Thanks Paul! Appreciate the comment and hope you enjoy part two.
Great vid, love seeing guys work on golf clubs. This is inspiring me to pull the shafts from my TaylorMade RSI 1s and put them in my Adams Idea 3 hybrid irons. I love the forgiveness of the Adams hybrids, but I have noodly R flex shafts. Hoping a stiff shaft from the RSI 1s will make the Adams more playable. Anyway, lots of work to do!
Glad you enjoy the videos Jarad. Always want to show how relatively easy it is to do some DIY without needing the most advanced tools and equipment! Good luck and like I say you can always put them back!
Looking forward to see how you hit them
I’ll get a gap test done next week Michael. Expecting an issue between the 7 and 8 iron.
@@berniebarnesgolf looking forward to it
Do you worry about swing weight? They could be all over the place?
Yeah I do and I’ll check the swing weight, plus the gapping and lofts / lies in part two of this series.
Great video Bernie. Let’s hope your Frankenstein irons don’t cause you to have Frankenstein rounds (LOL).
Keep up the good work.
Fairways & greens mate
😂 I hope they don’t Ian 😂 we will have to see.
I'm excited !!! Are you going to pick Joe the Pro's brains about swing weights etc ?
Possibly Dave, I am going to do a follow up video.
Looking forward to the gapping . I can see major tweaking going on with the lofts
You will have to wait and see Kev 😂 like a cliff hanger on neighbours 😂
Hi Bernie BNS as Dan name you I never thought you started your own channel good luck mate
Thanks mate, been creating content for about a year now, still a regular on Dans channel as well.
Informative stuff Lester just re-did my 1 iron shaft myself as it was getting a bit loose. I have done a couple of Frankenstein's in the past myself. Currently got a M1 3 wood with a five wood shaft was a easy one just unscrew 😅
That’s cool Nick! I’ve seen a couple of players with 5 wood shafts in their 3 woods, maybe worth a future video outlining the positives and negatives of the shorter shaft.
Enjoyed watching the build - will the shaft change/grip change have any effect on the swing weight (excuse my ignorance on such things😊) Looking forward to part 2!
Possibly Martyn 😂 wait til you see part 2 😂 should be out in a couple of weeks.
Really enjoyed the video looking forward to part 2, I have been interested in building my own clubs for a while. Quick question, if I was to build my iron set 5 degrees apart the whole way through losing possibly a 6 iron out of my set, would that work for gapping? I understand it’s not guaranteed to work perfect but would love to try it
That’s a good question Paul and from a fitting perspective most players have an area where they will hit two irons more or less the same distance as they don’t generate the strike or power. You would only know if you did it and then do a gap test.
Thsnks for the reply Lester appreciate it , yes will definitely do some gap testing, I just feel it has to help me personally, I always play well with a half set because of the commitment to one club. So slightly bigger gapping may give me that I’m hoping. Keep up the good work mate 👍🏻
Definitely worth a try Paul. Confidence is a massive thing in golf!
Hi Bernie. I find it enjoyable and rewarding to be able to work on my own clubs and your video was very interesting. Thanks. Are your nicely renovated set all the same swing weights or is that something you don't worry about? I will look forward to your gapping session of your new set of irons. Cheers!
The follow up video I will check the swing weights, do a gapping session and alter the lofts / lies if required Graeme. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Is that gorilla glue decent? Seen that but didnt think it would be strong enough so always used jb weld but its a nighmare to get off its that strong
It seems to be a decent glue mate, it’s the industrial strength and haven’t had a club head fly off yet 😂
Great video Bernie. knowing your a WHU fan I wouldn't let you near a Gas torch ether . Will we get a Bernie builds Franken Putter as well ?
Cheers Tom 😂 maybe although I’m happy with the putter at the moment as it’s behaving!
Good content but what was the reason for this 👍
Just fancied building set of clubs Garry.
Will all 3 sets swing weight different or is this something you don't notice
I’ll check swing weight in the next video in this series Robin. Didn’t want to make the video over an hour long.
Thankfully not the hammers grips!!!
I thought you would say that Tony 😂
Hi is white spirit ok to use on graphite ?
Yeah safe to use on graphite Paul. Never had an issue.
@@berniebarnesgolf👍🏻
What swing weight Bernie
Wait till I put out part 2 Ivan. I’ll do the lofts and lies as well.
Evening mate
Evening Kev!
