  • At 82 Rich Little, who has impersonated hundreds of celebrities and politicians over the years, shows no signs of letting up. Correspondent Tracy Smith sits down with the comedian and impressionist, now performing in Las Vegas, to talk about the presidents, movie stars and TV icons, like Johnny Carson, who have all been given the Rich Little treatment.

    My favorite Rich Little story is the one he told about calling up Jimmy Stewart to invite him and Mrs. Stewart over for dinner while using the voice of Jimmy Stewart. He said, "Imagine the confusion at the Stewart house when his wife asked who was on the phone. That was Jimmy Stewart inviting us over for dinner."

Problem was unexpectedly I found out I had cancer and was on my second chemotherapy treatment. That did not stop me. We drove out to Vegas for the weekend. All of my hair started to fall out the night before the show. We did make it to the show and Rich Little was excellent. Today we both still love finding any clips on You Tube to watch Rich Little and enjoy his performance.

    Never realized he too was banned by Carson. This is so nice to see he’s still performing. He’s so talented. No one nails voices as well.

    • @waldolydecker8118
      @waldolydecker8118 3 роки тому +7

      The way Carson permanently banned scores of people from his show is a dirty little secret that has never really been highlighted in all the discussions of his legacy. Ironically it was his ban of all Hip-Hop/Rap performers from his show that ended up being his Waterloo. When unknown Arsenio Hall stepped in and provided this most popular-selling, yet banned group late night bookings, it established a strong young viewership demographic for Hall and eroded critical portions of Carson's Tonight Show demographics.
      NBC and Carson had battled repeatedly in contract negotiations during his tenure, but due to Carson's success, NBC would lose every time (1 3/4 hr show reduced to 1 1/2 hr, then reduced to 1 hr; Carson moving the show from NYC to Los Angeles [it's now back in NYC]; 5 live shows a week reduced to 4 live and guest host, then reduced to 3 live and 2 reruns; Carson paid vacation expanded to 15 weeks/yr while his salary exploded to an unheard of $25 million/yr; total production ownership of 'Tonight' including all Carson episodes since his 1962 arrival transferred to Carson in his 1980 contract; etc, etc). Carson's drop in audience share from 40% to less than 20% and declining by 1990 gave NBC Executives their first solid opening to once and for all get rid of their thorny legal adversary Carson, and pivot to a more demographically younger and less legally formidable host.
      In 1990-91, NBC Executives accomplished the task by systematically leaking a series of clandestine rumors to major news outlets and trade papers (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter) that Johnny Carson was planning to retire soon. Carson (and Ed McMahon) would vehemently deny and mock the reports in nightly Tonight Show monologues, but NBC's drip...drip rumor campaign was steady and relentless. Carson's retirement rumors began to gained credibility - despite his denials - and the sheer avalanche of their growth eventually forced him to capitulate and establish a retirement date with NBC. It all played out before your eyes in nightly Tonight Show monologues during the 1990-92 period. Once Carson finally capitulated on air, NBC Executives made sure he was given the red carpet exit treatment - but none of Carson's team appreciated the way they were forced out before they wanted to leave. Ed McMahon made an appearance on Arsenio Hall's show within a week of leaving "Tonight" and Doc Severinsen followed shortly afterwards - neither had any love for NBC or new host Jay Leno. NBC Executives were so smooth in how they forced Carson out that even to this day, most Americans have no clue that it was even done; they would swear to you Carson "voluntarily retired" of his own volition. After decades of Carson using his grip over his 40% audience share to ring concession after concession from NBC, his dwindling 16% audience share of mostly older Americans by 1992 opened him to removal. NBC botched every negotiation with Carson over a 30 year stretch, except the final one - when they moved to force him out.
      The Carson downfall makes for an excellent Harvard case study. In "Pacific Overtures," Stephen Sondheim referenced a line from Haiku poetry that states "The blossom falls on the mountain; the mountain falls on the blossom; all things fall." Absolute power not only can corrupt, but it can often blind you to potential dangers. With a level of comfort from his total ownership and control over "Tonight," and no visible challenger for his Late Night crown, Carson became too intransigent with tastes outside his own personal palate, setting himself up for someone to come along and fill the void. Its a lesson learned that anybody can be brought down if they take their eye off the ball, even when their seemingly holding all the aces. It happened to a beloved national icon and institution like Carson, so it can happen anybody.

We didn't get alot of UK Comedians on TV back then, except for Benny Hill, but my parents wouldn't let us watch him, because they thought it was a dirty show. We were just kids back then and didn't know about sex, and I can remember asking my parents why he was chasing women around and trying to lift up their skirts? Looking back, that probably wasn't an appropriate show for children to be watching. It seems like most of the entertainers from the UK that were famous in the US back then, were singers.

    Rich Little is simply the greatest master of his craft there ever was.
    I caught his act in Vegas a couple years ago, and he certainly still has it. It was uproariously funny. He did acknowledge the age of his act by starting out with the line "If you're here and under 40, take a Valium!"
    However, he has stated that the relative lack of newer impressions in his act is at least partly due to recent actors using a natural style delivery that makes their voices less distinctive. "It’s much easier to do Humphrey Bogart than Tom Cruise, How do you imitate Brad Pitt? George Clooney? Wouldn’t mean anything."
    Even the very talented Frank Caliendo, who had come closest to Little's level of

    My parents took me to a show in Vegas in the early 70’s - Mel Torme was the main act, with Rich as the opener. I can still recall the amazement and laughter from my Dad, and the audience. Thanks for the memories Rich!

    I grew up watching Rich Little, & he's brought so much joy & laughter into the world, he deserves for this appearance to lead to the biggest comeback Hollywood has ever seen. May it be so. YES! P.S. I'd love to see a world where we are revered and become MORE valued as we age, as we should be.

    Watching Rich Little teach Jimmy Stewart how to speak correctly was a great moment. What a talent. The clip is available on UA-cam and Jimmy Stewart was a great man.

    I just saw him Nov 2021 at the Tropicana in Vegas. It's a "memory lane" show, which is a great vehicle for the voices he does and the back stories were entertaining.
