In 1989 I was listening to this song when I was invited to record at Paisley Park studios. I had recorded my first song Loves a Two Way Street, my early mentor Brent Doener, the brother of this drummer was instrumental in teaching myself and teaching myself the ways of the music business. Anyways, I was a big fan of Refugee, between the Doener brothers mstly all Brent I came out of Prince's studio released our/tunes and hit top 10, 5 months later number one in most provinces in Canada, this band Refugee and there music was instrumental (pardon the pun), in helping myself learn to play and thus my global tours, and radio songs, thank you very much fellas, Doosie Ward, ie George Ward.
I could never understand why this band never took off...they were awesome. I have their album, which I STILL listen to, and I had an opportunity to see them live in Halifax back in the day...either at the Palace or the Misty Moon (not even sure if those clubs still exist)...can't remember now but they had a great live stage show too. Thanks for the upload!!
So underrated. I first heard Refugee when they opened a show in Charlottetown, PEI for Honeymoon Suite back in the late 80s. It was the "Exiles In The Dark" tour. Honeymoon Suite was good, but for me Myles and the band blew them off the stage. I got to see them again a few years later at an old bar in Dartmouth known as the Crazy Horse. Still amazing. Myles Hunter's solo albums are also well worth a listen.
OMG thank you for posting this. I had this cassette (!) like 25 years ago but it was lost long long ago. Thanks for blowing the dust off an old betamax tape and posting this. Brings back memories, it does.
what a blast from the past....I was at the warehouse the day the lads taped this song! What a great group of musicians and more importantly a great group of guys!! Father Myles is a brilliant song writer. Check out his most recent song with Ken Greer....Jackson Kevin Campbell on youtube
@JohnnyCharger1968 ---great catch! the drummer is actually Brian Doerner, Brent's identical twin brother. Seriously....he's currently playing with Saga. Look him up.
I had a note from Brian on the weekend. He's playing with a band called "Crisis, what Crisis" which is a Supertramp cover band. He's still pretty pissed about the whole Saga thing. Not sure what Myles is up to these days....
@unstabledavid no kidding.....I wonder who he'll hook onto now? He's a fantastic drummer and I think he's pretty well respected in the biz. Maybe he'll connect with his brother again.

Yeah, cool song, have the orig.vinyl
Any video recordings of "Beauty in Pain"?
Is the Bass player tapping? That would've been something relatively new at that time.
Sean Moloney nah, Billy Sheehan was doing it in Talas wayyy before 1987. It's cool here though

yes i have brian on my facebook friends list he seems upbeat and pretty happy
Good song, solid songwriting ! Is it just me, or does the drummer look a lot like Brent Doerner from Helix ??
