I’m an engineer in the field of aerospace and I really like the base design of the airframe, as a twin engine it would fly great and looks a lot like the OV-10 Bronco. Weapons placement and the back motors not so much but hey this is just fun.
Also curious if this game would allow you to make a modern combat airship and cargo airship. A modern combat design could be used as a massive air superiority Zeppelin. It parks over a desired objective area you wish to lock down and is covered in tons of CWIS, positions for shoulder fired MANPADs, and guided missile turrets. Automatic targeting systems and radar coverage will inform them the moment a target enters their AO.
Triple boom. A bold choice. Have to say though, It doesn't look like there is enough room for a long loiter time after ammo, turret mechanisms, avionics etc are installed, especially with the thin wings
I like it. A lot. It's funny that the maverick is so slow you can fire it, and fly the plane to the target, make your sweep, destroy target with guns before the maverick makes it there 😂 it gets there and sees a charred tank and wonders "what did I miss?"
I would think the C-146A would make a great 2 engine platform for an AC-146. It's already in inventory. It's based on the Dornier 328 turboprop, which means there are already parts out there for it. It can carry 10,000lbs of guns, ammo, fuel, and mission specific equipment. The wings and the propellers are mounted high, so it'll do okay in rough forward airbases.
I find using turrets in Flyout is a lot easier when their custom axis's are bound to the arrow keys. Aiming with mouse sliders alone is neigh impossible
The most intuitive problem is that the tail rudder is too small. Secondly, in the recent war, the reality shows that the threat of individual air defense to this direct anti-infantry aircraft is too great, and perhaps the future will be the era of patrolling missile projection platforms.
The niche this thing fits in (specialized ground-attack for low intensity or asymmetric warfare) is generally occupied by very many missiles harnessed to a dirt cheap subsonic aircraft, like an A-10, harrier, or Su-25.

OV-10 Bronco could totally be a loiter drone with a minigun and laser range-finder to ensure accurate fires. just saturating the area with top-down 20mm is plenty to keep insurgents down or cause them to consider retrograde operations.
I've been experimenting with a Harrier-type gunship for a while in Simpleplanes, and i am glad tbat you tried something like it in FlyOut. Good build 👍
You could use the original AC-47 targeting method of a 3-4-5 triangle. 4k ft radius orbit, 3k ft up, puts guns at 5k ft range. 53° angle of bank, maybe a little less for arc of fire and you'd beat the area at the centre of the orbit with fire.
Cool aircraft. You can really see the OV-10 influences here. A couple suggestions if you play with this some more? You could mount the engine exhaust ports on the INNER boom for better heat signature masking. Change the tail rudder surfaces from vertical to canting INWARD or OUTWARD for better radar dispersion. Choose ONE GUN and mount it on the bottom of the fuselage more towards the middle for better weight distribution and lower cost. Use the weight savings from paring down to one gun for more hard points under the wings for guided weapons, etc. With only one gun to control you may be able to drop the WSO and crew ship with one busy pilot. More weight savings. Maybe try out a wing with slightly swept back leading edge for better speed and increase wing span and surface area for more stable flying characteristics and more internal area for fuel storage = better range and loiter capability. Cheers!
I believe the rational is that the plane circles with a bank angle, and thus doesn't shoot "down" per se but more sideways; So it doesn't need to shoot down.
I loved this plane, I posted a similar crosssection vector in your server of a P2V which I names the P2V-8FH Super Neptune which had like a 20mm gatling on the belly that could be replace the 2x12.7mm turret in the rear. Could also carry either 2x50mm, 2x57mm, or a single 77mm for antishipping mission or for screwing the casual frigate or DD. Came with radar rangefinder, 1950’s-ish Night vision, Could bring 4 torpedoes and is faster than even the japanese P-2
Aside from the existential dread pooling in the bottom of the cockpit. I think this is a pretty good advertisement for a return to dorsal turrets. More specifically in a light aircraft. The AC-130 gives up some of its rough landing capability for its armament. A light aircraft capable of using unprepared runways could be pretty effective.
I imagine the dorsal turret being rearward facing usually as no pilot would like to have their own cannon pointing their own heads. Otherwise this is a really interesting take and a nice Spectre/Bronco mash-up.
Umm... if you put the biggest gun on the tail, wouldn't the recoil cause all kinds of yaw if fired out either side? If you put it at center mass and center lift, it mitigates that force.
In Your build, maybe instead of cal 50 gatling, might be more advantageous to use 3 barrel heavy machinegun. 3 barrels instead of more, bit smaller cadency, but still quite ammo guzzler, with redundant barrels in case of jamming, or failure. Another posibility is to use lightest "heavy" machinegun (like chineese QJZ-89) barrel integrated into the wing, with body of the gun inside the hull of the airplane, for bigger ammo rack to supply the gun.
Nice design thought experiment, but I believe if you used realistic weights for the amount of ordinance you have identified, plus a reasonable flight distance and loiter time, the plane has to grow in size. For the armament you have chosen, plus fuel load, you are likely looking at about 25,000+ pounds empty weight and 45,000 to 50,000 pounds max take-off weight depending on armament and fuel loadout. This is essentially an A-10. You will likely need an armored tub for the pilot and back seater, similar to the A-10, as this plane will have to fly at lower altitudes (probably 5,000 to 6,000 ft) than the AC-130 Spooky (10,000 to 12,000 ft) due to the smaller armament not having the range to loiter at higher altitudes. Would be interesting to see you take an A-10, remove the GAU-8, substitute the 25mm front gun and 32mm or 35mm rear autocannon, and add a back seat position.
"Awe, look at that thing up there! It's so TINY!" "Umm, sir....'tiny' just removed our right flank. And is now working on the left." "........Excuse me, what?"
The original AC130 proved successful in Viet Nam, but the production of transport versions had higher priority. So, the USAF converted mothballed twin engine C119s into AC119 which were superior to the AC47 and were used effectively by the US and South Vietnam until the very end of the war. The intended usage of these platforms was in orbit mode such that the firepower would be directed at a stationary point on the ground. However, with its thermal night vision, the AC119 proved effective in hunting moving targets, destroying vehicles moving along the Ho Chi Min trail.
I wonder how effective it'd be to use almost like a flying wing airframe, with the weaponry being able to be brought outside via doors on an underbelly of the aircraft. I'm guessing with the large wingspan it be able to loiter within the air altitude for longer periods of time

if turret autocannon was sticking out of rear under tail, perhaps help if tail raised up some? easier to hit targets on ground without needing to tilt and turn as much, wings not get in way, but it would be at risk on takeoff and landing
The massive flying cruise liner you made got me thinking. The observation area looks like an AWACS. It would be cool to see you make a converted version intended to act as a nuclear powered mobile command craft, with many CWIS style defensive turrets on it to protect from missiles. It would be always on the move, patrolling the airspace of its country, and most likely have the air to air refueling as well as docking for smaller aircraft. Kinda like taking airforce 1 and turning it into a mobile defended pentagon for high command.
The dorsal turret is hilarious 😂. I think maybe a mini gun or some dual, triple, quad .50cal would be more "practical". Back seater needs a helmet mounted sight.
Good idea, but a bit troublesome to get that into praxis. Im mostly thinking RECOIL. Recoil will dictate the biggest caliber aviable to use, to assure the main hull construction will hold it (i.e. NOT braking it in half when shooting to the side), AND recoil will not move the aircraft in the sky too much, to prevent piloted flight. Similarily like both on Warthog and Spooky, weight of the aircraft matter. I think, that heavy machineguns and/or smaller calibre of autocanon, WITH AMMO, being encapsuled inside (awacs similar) disc - like gunpods, being used instead of the "main body" of the old "Lighting" design (similar to yours aircraft). The shape should allow the gun to turn around and pitch up and down moving only the barrel up and down, with close to none effect on aerodynamics. If the disc is firmly connected into the frame, it could even be stabilized to mitigate recoil to a degree. For "harder" targets using Hellfires is the best solution, although having few suicade drones with warhead bigger than a handgranade sprinkled into the hellfire armament, would do a charm. Not to mention, the aircraft/drone can either have more "discs", or it could incorporate the "discs" into the wing, possibly even into the smaller wing, connecting the backsides of the engine hulls. Would LOVE to see that fire support drone with VTOL capability too. Another possibility to make the thing work more effectively, is the laser-guided bullets for the heavy machinegun/autocanon.
Was kinda hoping you would go the route of building a modernized/futuristic Grumman Tracker style of aircraft and equipping it for gunship duties. This design feels quite similiar to those you've already built as heavy fighters/interceptors in Prop Punk. I also feel that for flight efficiency and areodynamic reasons you should make some fairings that cover the cannons from the slipstream when they are not in use, on the current design that is, rather ruins the lines of the aircraft and despite their angular design, would likely create a lot of unwanted or unnecessary drag.
The C-17 and B-52 would also be interesting as they could be loaded up with more Cannons and Guns than AC-130 Plus more and larger stand off missiles on the wings!
Lol one last thing I'd love to see a couple retractable GAU-17 Cannon underneath the aircraft and CIWS mounted on the top both for defense against both ground fired and air-air missiles!

OH! And if you need a video idea, why not convert warbirds to jet aircraft! Like the P-38 "modernized".
Could you please do the same however in reverse, create a C-5 (AC-5) Galaxy Super Gunship!🙏👍
