About 45 years ago my family moved from Chicago,Illinois to Kentucky. I loved horses so much and read everything I could get my hands on. I had very little riding experience. One day a group of girls invited me to go riding with them and had an extra horse for me to ride. When everyone ran things were great then they all stopped but the horse I was riding would not stop. I did a one rein stop and stopped him (reading pays off). I looked at the other girls sitting there with there mouths gapped opened and eyes widened. I asked if they had trouble with this horse stopping. They said that he had been ridden in very harsh bits that never worked so they had been riding him with barbed wire wrapped around the mouthpiece!!!! I told them that was cruel. I loved riding that horse, I hope that I taught them something so that horse never was treated that way again. Problems are most definitely the fault of people not horses. Love your videos!

Omg!! Thank you for this so much! I've been watching a ton of your videos lately. I rescued a TWH mare from a TX kill pen and she is soooooo rushy (especially when alone cuz shes extremelybuddy sour). And we are struggling to get a flat foot walk. Takes us 15-45mins for her to loose rein walk. What you said at the beginning makes complete sense why she braces and "runs through" the bit. That 2nd horse, the grey is very much like mare and the bay that had his buddy removed...oh man that is my mare to a T with the hollering and very nervous jigging! It's going to be alot of retraining for sure but im in it for the long haul with her and she deserves to be ridden where she can relax! We are on waitlist for the Rocking S snaffle. I tried her in bitless the other day and it was a HUGE difference for the better! We do a ton of pressure release with the bit we have now and practice head down. This video and many others have been a God send! Thank you!!!

I am so glad the videos have helped! Keep working on head down and do lots of small circles (working on head down). You should be able to get relaxation in just a few minutes. Glad bitless made a difference! Some horses love it! I am a big proponent of it!

I know this was posted 2 years ago but I have a French trotter and he does exactly what you said more pressure faster. I’ve changed from a Pelham to a Wilkie bit and he’s gone so heavy and I can no longer stop when galloping it even just schooling in the arena

Got spotted saddle horse previously ridden in harsh shanks. I have ridden bitless but rode in snaffle … outside round pen he acts like last horse in video. High anxiety I got him at 18 … sweet horse been through many “trainers”

I have had a 13 year old Tennessee walker for about a year. I was using a snaffle(old owners used a shank bit) and I had issues with him rooting the bit. I sent him to a trainer with 50 years of experience for the past 60 days for this issue and a couple others. He said my horse had minimal training. I get him back Sunday and he recommended putting him in a dexter ring bit.

Watch these videos, especially #5. It talks about horses pulling down. Most gaited horses have very little training.

I don't think I'm in favor of that bit. What bit was the trainer using? How did he work with the horse to help with the rooting? Focus on training softness with a snaffle in a small area (so you stay safe).

Sooooo agree with this video. Gaited horses are such good horses but are “trained” on pain

Warwickschiller also has a video working with a hard mouthed shire, similar methods but at a way slower process.
The part starts a little later in his video at 10.45

He's also done a video on how to start a horse in a snaffle, and how to train em to be soft using it from the ground perfect for those who don't feel confident in riding their horse in a snaffle yet.

Ivy what do you think about the little s hackamore? It seems more in the bitless bridle category than a mechanical hackamore.

How about bitless? I did two years ago with three of mine, I didn't notice any difference and all the chomping and pulling has gone, I mean how would you feel about a lump of metal in your mouth you couldn't get rid of?

I've actually seen this quite alot, that gaited horses are seen more in shanks than snaffles. It just makes me curious why it's so common. Did it come from how the Spanish rode their horses? Is it the culture that's amplified by some gaited displines that require it? Why is it so nationalized?

    • @IvyS
      @IvyS  2 роки тому +1

I think it is "tradition". I don't think it has anything to do with Spanish tradition and more to do with this is the way they have always done it. And they want something quicker. Gaited horses are known for not being well trained. Lots of shortcuts!

@@IvyS yeh I definitely agree, when it's all you grow up with and see it becomes normalized. I also think media plays a huge factor in this aswell.

15 years ago, I was told by everyone that you COULDN'T train a gaited horse to gait on a snaffle.

  • @inedinevanderwesthuizen2292

Could u do this with another breed
