  • In this video I review the KLOS Grand Cutaway Mini. This is one of their full carbon acoustic guitars. I compare the KLOS Grand Cutaway Mini to the Ovation Elite 1778T and the Martin GPC13E Zircote. Thanks to Sono Tone and Martin for the strings used in this review.

wonderful! It's 24 3/4 scale length for the mini ..

I sense that the mic is also great, what are your thoughts on it? I hear more "air" than usual, like I can almost breath it.

Yes, I'm happy with the mics. I experimented with several before I settled on the Lauten Audio LA-320 on the body below the bridge and the MXL 603S aiming at the 12th fret. My room is pretty good - not too dead or too lively. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video, Mike. I'm impressed with the Klos. For me, it held it's own against the others, if it was perhaps a tad thinner sounding than the Ovation especially, but with its smaller body size one would expect that. But I didn't hear a glaring difference in the overall sound in terms of carbon fiber vs. wood. I'm curious whether your earlier opinion that the "Carbon Timber" model of this guitar was better balanced still holds and if so, can you expand on that a bit more? Is it that the mids are more present than the high stings or something else. Thanks.

Hey Bill, thanks for watching and for your kind words. I was able to briefly compare the timber to the carbon at NAMM. The condition of the strings on the carbon was horrible, but even so I felt the timber was more lively and balanced with better definition on the low E. Ian at KLOS says there is a slight variation in the timber construction that makes the top a little more rigid. In the real world all 3 guitars in the video were pretty equal in loudness. You may have also noticed that the pickup only sound of the KLOS was most consistent with the miked sound. I really like all 3 guitars - different flavors. If I had to choose only one of the 3 to buy today it would be the KLOS timber. I may have some of their other models to review in the near future.

@@mikesgigtv Thanks for the additional info. I'd love to hear a side by side. I was not caring for the look of the Carbon Timber model quite as much but would have to consider it if the sound is superior. I'm done with wood guitars for the most part. I'm just tired of humidifying!

I liked the Martin the best overall. It just sounds more open to me, if that makes sense. To me, all 3 sounded better miked.

Thanks for watching! I like that Martin a lot. Even though one of their most affordable, and made in Mexico mostly by robots, I like it better than many of their more expensive guitars. The 1.75 inch nut fits my hand.

agreed, the Martin sounds fantastic, but I'm still pretty impressed with both carbons as well, and I think for someone like me who doesn't take great care of things, they seem like a compelling option for durability
