    You shouldn't feel too bad. It's a great learning experience, you got to see your sister which is more important than a black typewriter.

    You thrift adventures are my favourite videos. Your thrift and vintage stores look amazing, and soooo cheap compared to prices in Australia.

    Hey i just got to this video and just wanted to add that I think it's awesome you like to go for public transportation. Figuring out public transport on my travels is another "hobby" of mine... I think this could be a new series - travels with typewriter!

    I love this! I just bought a 1958 Smith-Corona Sterling that is almost the same color, a little darker, with green keys and a green logo. Cool thing is, it came with the EXACT SAME Holiday Case!! I am in love with it and couldn't be happier with my purchase! Bonus, it only had one owner and she kept all the original manuals, brochures, case key, and brushes!

    The carriage on the Olympia SM series often rub on the frame because the rubber mounts that hold the mechanism up (above the feet) squash down. They are easy to replace, even with tap washers. You should have got that Olympia AND the Noiseless AND the Smith -Corona! Yes. ALL three!! Haha. At least you got one, and it is a good one. Oh well, next time?!

    Hate to tell you, but that Hammond Multiplex for $200 was the deal. They go for 4 to 5 times that on ebay and are worth it. Still, getting a good S-C is never a bad thing, especially in a holiday case. I think the idea of that case is that the locking mechanism can be removed so the case can be used an an overnight suitcase.

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  3 роки тому

      I know that that is probably a good deal on that piece, but it's not really within my wheelhouse of knowledge. I'd rather leave it for someone who knows what they're doing!
      As for the case- I thought so!

    • @DLTellet
      @DLTellet 3 роки тому

      @@JustMyTypewriter I guess the idea was to carry the typewriter to your destination hotel and park it there, then use the case for side trips. I have a really nice S-C Sterling in a black and white tweed holiday case - very retro cool. Too many typewriters, not enough space!

    Thanks for taking us along! The Model 7 Noiseless was nice but the Olympia was nicer! I have a 39 Deluxe Noiseless with the chrome keys and spool covers and folding handle. It's my favourite of machine in my collection; just a work of art in design and mechanics!

    There is a serious lack of typewriters in charity shops in the UK - those that are about are either in need of serious repair or they $200 + .
    Antique stores here again can be so hit and miss - many Royal Rotalites, or Adlers with a QWERTZ and AZERTY.
    You’ve got a beautiful machine the colour is really beautiful and the case is very cute.
    Is this the machine that Tom Hank prefers?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  3 роки тому

      I think a lot of it is up to chance and patience- my local shops sometimes have two or three really cheap machines all at once followed by a drought for months- I just happened to hit at the right time!

    I need to get out of western Washington to look for typewriters, the prices here are insane compared to these! Saw a filthy & rusted Olivetti last weekend for $125, what are they smoking??

  • @scottwigton7667
    @scottwigton7667 3 роки тому +1

    Wow. Looks like those thrift stores are a mecca for typewriters, and some good ones, too. In my area, I must have visited or called 30 thrift/antique stores in December. Saw only about 6 machines and of those 4 were rusted out hulks suitable only as boat anchors (and still asking $40 and up!). The other useable ones were priced $100 and up (Thrift store???). FB Marketplace is no better, with people asking hundreds for fairly common, average shape machines ('50s QDLs and SC Silents, etc.). I suspect there are 2-3 "ultra" collectors here who get first dibs on the decent machines. I know of one with well over 100 typewriters in his collection. Makes it hard to add a machine without spending a boat load!

    Hi ! For 10$ your Smith Corona with case is a real bargain. For a collector, buying the black Olympia makes sense but as a typewriter user...45$ is a bit too high (unless you really love this model of course).👍

  • @johntapp7232
    @johntapp7232 3 роки тому +1

    A-ha!! It happened to you just as it used to happen to me!! I tell you, typewriters hitch rides!! I couldn’t even go out to eat without it happening. I would go someplace with, oh, maybe three or four machines. I’d be away from the pickup maybe 15 minutes. Come back, and find that six more hopped into the bed!!

  • @KRAFTWERK2K6
    @KRAFTWERK2K6 Рік тому

    Don't beat yourself over the black Olympia. If your gut feeling didn't tell you "all clear" when trying it, maybe it would have been a bad decision in the long run with probably even more expensive hidden construction sites. ESPECIALLY if it was almost double over your budget limit. Black color or not, maybe it was not supposed to be.

  • @vincentaurelius2390

    I routinely overpay for machines because I know that if buyer’s remorse settles in I can turn around and sell it for at least half what I paid and I’m ok with taking a loss. In the meantime I got to try out a new brand or model and compare it to others in my collection. And yes, I would have jumped hard and fast on that Olympia.

      I didn't get it because of my self inflicted price cap- it can be difficult sometimes, but I'm so out of room for more machines, the only way I can accept getting a new one is if it's so cheap I can't say no!
