I have a 2009 Ford Escape LTD. I got the Safety Recall 14S05 notice dated July 1, 2014 about the potential power steering problem. Unfortunately, checking with Ford indicated my car was not covered. BTW, after I bought my car in 2011 I found the original window sticker in the glove box. It did indicate that the car was manufactured in Kansas City. Ford argued that the defective was only covered by cars made during certain shifts at Kansas City. On August 15, 2017 I took my car to Sam's Club to get four new tires. As I pulled into the Sam's club parking lot the power steering started getting intermittent and failed totally by the time I pulled up to the service bay. They still agreed to change out the tires even though the steering was defective. On August 18 2017 I took my car to the nearest Ford dealer to get the power steering checked out. They said they had to replace the whole steering column. They charged me $1467.57. I tried to appeal to Ford corporate about this charge. They sympathized about this but said said it had been too long. I wonder if this was just an excuse since they wouldn't even consider it three years earlier.
There are multiple issues with the system. Initial issues were clicking and grinding. The universal was a problem. Then several years later I have the power issue part of a recall. Unfortunately National SafetyHighway Safety Board allowed ford to clear the recall with 3 procedures Software upgrade, sensor replacement or power steering replacement. Mine had software done when I took it in for oil change 10 years ago so I refiled claim with NHSB and if enough people file and injury occurs there may be a 2nd recall however I replaced the sensor in the column out of pocket. The sensor is about $300 at dealer or half at parts store if you find one. Amazon has some under $100
My 2012 has been doing the same thing. It was also produced in the Kansas City Assembly Plant. I'm pissed. It helps to make sure your tires are all the same kind, air pressure, and there are no problems with stuff like ball joints, control arms, that type of thing. It seems that problems with those cause it. However, it's been doing it again for none of those reasons now. Regardless, this can definitely cause an accident!!! Very dangerous!!!
File a claim with NHSB
For needs to be sued out their ass this is b******* they do this was a problem when they released these cars from the factory but as usual Ford is junk they need to be sued extensively that's why I f****** hate Fords
My car did the same while I was turning I got scared i thought I was going to hit the car next to me but now when I drive n turn I hear a click noise n that never happened again but again that clicking noise is there wt every turn :/ single mom of 5 here so im hoping i can afford to just get a new car 🤞🏽Que diosito me oiga ☺️🙏🏽
Mine does this . Used to fix itself after turn car off then back on but now I need to do that a few times. I noticed when I open door then close door and try to start it kicks in. Super annoying
I just replaced my tie rods and sway bars and definitely the alignments off. Could this cause the power steering assist fault issue?
Having same issue. They should be all called back, obviously Ford problem
If your battery light came on just before this happens it is the battery, charge it or replace and issue will be resolved. Bad battery messes up electric power steering, google it
This is a summation of all these useful comments: 1- if you drive over potholes or rough road 2- if it's cold or freezing outside, the ford escape will fail.. Power steering goes out, happened to me yesterday and will keep happening. 3-You will get cheated and taken advantage of by mechanics. What do we do other than complain or help each other? We don't buy Ford. You folks realize that with all these electrical issues that Ford is going FULL EV BY 2025? Talk about delusional.....
I have the same issue took to Ford dealership they had it for three days told they MIGHT be able to fix it for three thousand dollars no guarantee
Alot of these issues are actually the Gauge cluster solder connections. The can bus messages have to go through the cluster. If they are delayed or distorted, the epas will error out. To know if it's your cluster, push on the upper right of the cluster while starting the vehicle and see if the power steering returns. If so, then you just need the cluster repaired.
It happened to me today that's why I'm watching this
Have an issue with my 09 mariner premier. Loud clunking/clicking noise while driving and making a turn. Replaced rack and pinion, cv shafts, stem joint, that sensor you shown and still cannot figure out what the issue is.
When the vehicles moving it's nothing like that to turn the only difficult when you're trying to park and s*** yeah it sucks people actually buy manual rack and pinions and install them in their vehicle and drive them around daily without electric or without fluid those not end of the world or dangerous
Great illustrations well done..
Ford should replace them all if there's a recall. No matter what plant, city it was manufactured
This happened to my 2011 Ford Escape a few weeks ago and I'm going thru the same exact issue. I checked my vin to see if I qualify for the recall but unfortunately it's not. But it's doing the same issue in this video
does it not qualify cause the year or what? Because I want to see If I can take mine in.
2009 ford escape same problem
I have a 2012 ford escape xlt and i went to start it last night and out the blue this started happening. It just out the blue the wheel was hard to turn
Were you able to solve it? Did you replace any parts?
My 2012 escape has the same problem.
Did anything work for you?
my 2012 escape did that today. ive only had it 3 months. Im gonna raise some hell
Were you able to solve it?
I have 2009 ford escape how replace the rack pinion?
How replace the rack pinion
2014 same problem.
My daughter and grand daughter almost died and took out another family going 59 mph down hiway and powersteering cut out and crossed center line into oncoming traffic at rush hour. This is bullshit that they never recalled all these tributes. This a 2008 with 100k on it
I did brake’s on my 2011 escape jacked up one side at a time and now it has to much power steering to the left and none to the right 😂
My 2012 Ford Escape has been doing this off and on for at least a year. When it locks up, it will not budge an inch!! Very scary!!! I turn it off and back on and it usually works, but lately, one time, it took 5 minutes to get it to work. Mechanics said whole column needs replaced quoting me almost $2,000. Other videos and person said it's a torque sensor. There are videos on how to replace those. Much cheaper.
I have the same issue with my 2012 Ford Escape limited. It’s a very dangerous issue. You never know when it’s going to lock up.
Were you able to solve it?
Sorry, I didn't see your message til now. It resolved for awhile and has been doing it again lately. It helps to make sure tires match, have equal air pressure and there are no issues with ball joints, control arms, etc. I got those things fixed and that worked for awhile. Now, it's doing it again. @@ReasonShrestha
I have a 2012 Ford escape and I'm having this issue but I turn it off and it comes back on just once but I had my windshield replaced that had the sticker for which plant it was assembled at but could it be this issue or something else?
I believe so as it can't be much of anything else in there.
Did you try changing any parts?
I have a 2013 escape and power steering is out. I like no power steering is this OK?
I bought a 2008 Ford Escape with no power steering. I took it to the Ford dealership knowing I might pay for for a whole column or atleast the same sensor shown in this video. The tech updated the codes in the car and that's all it took for it to work correctly. I've had no problems with it since.
How much did it cost ya?
They probably just charged your battery
@teeemoni how much was the update
What codes did they update???
Mr IBARRA, ****I thought you had a video on how to change the power steering motor. It was the best & easiest installation I've seen. It now shows its a hidden private video. Could you PLEASE send me that video?******(
No. I don't have a video of that kind. Must be mistaken for someone else. Good luck.
I had this problem fixed by my Mechanic, he did it, and it was very difficult to align properly. He had to get another sensor. Big question: Will this be permanently aligned? I am afraid that when I drive the car, it will suddenly freeze or turn to full left or right when I am driving, especially during high speed.
2009 Ford escape limited not in Kansas plant but does this exact same thing.
It’s probably just that sensor you showed on the paper. It’s super common on these and can happen on other cars with electric power steering. It’s the problem when you add sensors to everything
The sensor has ro be replaced regardless becuase it can't be removed from thr column so you have to replace the column which includes the sensor which is permanently attached to column.
@@harveyib114 dude there’s like 20 videos on how you can change just the sensor. I just ordered the part to do it. All I need is to go buy a steering wheel remover although I’m thinking I might just take it to my mechanic and get him to do it since it’s cold out lol. Just search Ford Escape steering sensor replacement on here. You can do it
@@harveyib114 ua-cam.com/video/h6KGTfZLTsU/v-deo.html He’s prolly the best guy to follow but there’s lots of good videos on it as well
dang, my 2011 escape was built in kansas but the isn't egilible for the recall. thanks for the video tho! was worth a shot
The odd thing is the tool icon did not illuminate.
I have this issue with my 2011 Ford Fusion SEL! In 2015, there was a recall for 2011-2012 Ford Fusions for Power Steering Assist Failure, however, according to Ford, my particular 2011 Fusion has no recall because my car was built in June 2010 and the recall only involved Fusions build from September 2010 to February 2012! Well, I think this is BS because my power steering failure issue is identical to the recalls of the Fusions that were under recall! Ford doesn't want to fix my defect and wants me to pay over $2K for the replacement of the steering problems! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER AGAIN WOULD I EVER BUY A FORD, PERIOD!!! I actually inherited this Ford Fusion from my mom who was too disabled to drive it any longer.
My customer has the same problem but the other mechanic bought her the whole steering rack...I hope that’s the problem if not I’ll try n find the problem Myself!
I have that same power steering fault issue happened on Christmas day. It was recalled in 2014 and repaired by the previous owner. They refuse to fix a recall twice and is charging over two grands for repairs
My 2008 escape having the same problem
I have this same issue with my 2011. Now happening frequently. Thank you for this info. I hope you were able to get your vehicle fixed. I will definitely go to my local dealer to inquire about service and make a stink if not addressed. This is ridiculous. It has happened in my car a few times through the last few years but is now a big issue. Happening more and more. It is a real danger. You are driving along and the power steering just stops working. Be careful.
Following up on this, what did they end up changing and how much was the cost? Having the same issues.
I to have this issue' did you get any info ? price ? etc. ?
Mine just started if I shut off set alarm unlock and start will free up... terrible
This just happened to me today and realized it’s all electric power steering
I have been working on a friend's escape. I replaced the EPAS, but nothing changed. I checked the codes and the it doesn't show any codes to clear. All it says in the dash read out the power assist failure. I try to reset it and nothing. That snap ring took me about 4 hours to get off. I had to use a wood clamp to get the snap ring pliers to close far enough to get the snap ring to break free. I am working on a 2010 Escape with 340,000 miles on it. I'm sure Ford won't do anything about it.
Reset it sometimes that work
It happened to me, was scary. I have to stop and restart the vehicle
Thank you! That just happened to me on the way home. I ran for the fluid.... No power steering fluid reservoir in my Escape. Now I know it's electrical.
$4,000+ to get fixed. Dump it if you can.
My friend has a Ford Focus and it has this same problem. The shop wants $2900 to fix it. Ford has apparently put in this new system saving them money on the build side but screwing the customers later on. They must fix this problem. I wonder how many people have died as a result of losing power steering while driving. This is why lawyers are needed to make them accountable for their actions.
This is what happened to my 2013 Ford escape right now
Did this part fix the issue? I’m looking to fix it man cause it happened on the way to work . Definitely don’t have the budget for a new car so I’m kinda stuck having to fix it
