- How to overnight hike and camp in Romero Canyon near Tucson, AZ.
Note that the $5 overnight parking fee in Catalina State Park is in addition to any entrance fees you might need to pay. I always get an annual State Park permit, so the only charge is $5, but if you do not have an annual permit you'll have to pay the entry fee as well.

I camped at the spot 5 miles in last weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!
I didn’t think that trail was open. I had heard some hikers tried to hike it from the top down, I.e. from Romero Pass but the trail was non-existent.
Very informative and awesome video!
Rodrigo Mendez thanks! I still go
There a couple of times/year, it’s such a great spot.
Thank You for the tour and hike, I am processing all the hikes in the Tucson area as this is all new to Me. I am retiring from Maine to Tucson, to take advantage of the great outdoors, climate weather an d desert. Hiking and biking in the wilds is reward enough and I can't wait...Tim
If you want to get serious join one of the Tucson hiking clubs, there are quite a few of them. I got introduced to hiking in the area via the Tucson backpacking meetup group (see meetup.com).
Thank You Kurt, We have a park model in the Rincon West 55 plus community and They have a hiking club and bike club within the park, so this will be a good start to get to know the area. Happy trails Tim
I hear the cougars have a name for a hiker wrapped in a hammock. It's "burrito".
I'm too old and arthritic to make the hike to Romero Pass. I have to be satisfied with the Canyon Loop. Thanks for the guided tour.
+Dangerous Bill My hammock doesn't have a top, so the mountain lions consider it a taco...
Very nicely done ... looks like a great place!
Wow, that's high praise coming from you - your special effects video is way beyond me!
Kurt Papke Well thank ya kindly ... but just an old man with software and a weird sense of humor!
Just got back from camping at the site just past the pools. Thanks for the video, gave me a little preview before I left. Total cost was $12 for the one night.
Yep, if you don't have an annual state park pass, they hit you for the extra $7. Glad it worked out for you!!
music after your hike in the camp nearly got my cat stuck on the ceiling it was so loud I thought I rolled over the volume button.
+Vincent Stones Sorry :-( Can't change it now, but new videos all have a bit less "twangy" music, hopefully your cat stays off the ceiling!
Florence arizona female mtn lion & 2 Cubs had to be put down as they were eating a backpacker.fish & wildlife did it.
Huh. Haven't been able to verify the Mtn lion incident.
I just did a day hike to "high camp" 4 weeks ago (I have a video of that too) - so much water this year!!! I had planned to go to Romero Pass but turned around just past this campsite. Definitely a spot I'd like to come back to :) thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I was up there just over a month ago and the amount of water coming over the falls was incredible!
Thanks for posting the video. We're both lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Love Romero pools, never went past that pools, but maybe someday... scared of the mountain lions though.
Never seen a mountain lion in 10 years of hiking the area. The Romero Pools hike was my first Tucson hike.
We just did this hike yesterday to scout out the campsites... found the first one past the pools, but never came across the other two. Are they off to the right, along the creek? We went all the way up the side of the canyon on the left... are they beyond that? Nevertheless, a beautiful hike on a gorgeous day! Any hints you can provide would be appreciated.
The best way to find them is to record your mileage with a GPS. The pools are 2.5 miles, Old Camp is 5.0 miles, and the 3rd at 6.0 miles. Old camp is tough to miss because you literally walk right through the campsite. The last one is just off to the right.
Thanks so much!
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing
+littlebuddyFilms Glad you found it useful!
+littlebuddyFilms BTW, now would be a good time to go. We've had pretty good precip and the stream & waterfall is running well.
Hey Kurt Looking to do this hike and camp after this whole pandemic is over with. Do you know of any full digital and printable maps to get to each of the campsites? Thanks
It's a great hike! Unfortunately, they are not on any maps that I know of. There are no side trails in the canyon, so it's pretty hard to miss them.
What are you using to sterilize your water out there? Filter, iodine tabs?...
Good question. I mostly use Aquamira. If I am doing a hike where I know I'm going to have to drink terrible water (cattle tank, etc.) I'll bring my Katadyn filter.
@@KurtPapke , appreciate it
Hey thanks for the video. Question- In the intro and ending, where are you hiking?? Also, What kind of animal encounters have you had? what kind of preparation do you take for them?
Good question! In the intro and outro I am hiking along the Clear Creek Trail in the Grand Canyon. Also a good timing of the question about animal encounters. I have a whole video dedicated to that topic: ua-cam.com/video/jrQgEo2iTKQ/v-deo.html
Just last week I had an encounter with a rabid fox that I fought off with my trekking poles. I wish I had some pictures or video, but I was too busy fending off the critter!
Ahh. That's on my bucket list! ..Not the rabid fox. That's sad. I'll check out your other video(s) Thanks so much for replying!!
THIS IS SO COOL
Do you have gps coords for either camp? Thanks!!!
do you remember what elevation that the second camp is at
+Nathaniel Around 5500 ft
+Kurt Papke So I'm going to do Sabino Canyon to Catalina State Park late next month . I plan on using High Camp on my second night and I was wondering , does the trail run through the camp or is it a side trail off to the camp . I really don't want to miss this spot on my way down. What is the easiest way to spot the camp ?
+Nathaniel The trail passes through the edge of the campsite, no side trail. Just look for the campfire ring.
