That's what all cars are for. Nothing annoys me more than a garage queen. If you're gonna buy a car, drive it. Except in very rare circumstances, its not going to appreciate in value. I put 14k miles on my Giulia QV in the last 12 months. Went to some national parks, drove at exactly 55 mph on mountain passes in the rockies, even drove it (carefully) on a beach in Texas. Not to mention daily driving it since I took delivery. Because that's what it was made for.

The sand changing as it dries out reminds me of dirt track racing and the track drying out as the night goes on. The guy that makes the right adjustments to his car to match track conditions usually wins the race. I have seen the track so tacky when you first get there that it will pull the shoes off your feet to be so dry and slick 4 hrs later that it is shining like a piece of glass. Like the sand air pressure adjustment is one of the many changes. Checking the tire temperature with a pyrometer across the entire thread of the tire will tell you a lot about what needs to be done. The goal is to use all the tread on the tire and not just part of it. Most of the time it's the chassis that wins and not so much the engine size. I still love the sound of the Morrvair when it's digging, it's music to the ears. I think the rental jeep is the weak link of the fleet and should remain the grocery getter. "Just keep it to the floor Rudy" tells you something.

Just a little insight about modern automatic controls. On a 2013 Chevy truck if you start it to warm it up and jump out, the door will probably lock you out. I have had it happen 20 times since new. I Always put the window down ALL the way so I can get back in. I know several other owners around the same year that will do the same thing.
Food for thought............. Using another key to get back in sets off the alarm.

I had a 2001 Pontiac that locked me out one time because I was arguing with snow, and got out and the door swung shut from the hill. There it was, stuck in the snow, running, locked. I grabbed the title, took a different vehicle to work, then had the dealer make me a new key. After work, I unlocked it, parked it, and promptly pulled the fuse out of the door lock circuit. I never locked it anyway. Peaceful area and old car. The $25 for a key and a few gallons of gas idling was a lot less money than a locksmith or breaking something.

@@604h22a To be honest it was mostly about learning where the firmer sand is in the dunes and recognising the soft stuff where you could get stuck and getting a feel for what you are driving on, so basically comes with practise. We would usually run about 18 psi in the tyres, and drop them lower if needed. If you run them low all the time when you do get stuck you can't drop them lower for a bit more grip. The Toyotas we had usually weren't properly stuck until you got the frame touching the sand, so get a shovel and clear the sand away from the frame it it will usually move again. You also learn when to use 4 low and crawl through it, or when to keep your speed up and power through it. If you're going over the top of a big dune and down the slip face you need to keep enough speed up going over the top so you don't the frame get hung up on the top of the dune. then keep it pointed straight down and don't get sideways, that can be a bit scary the first few times.

She said it all, straight from the dealership i made the same mistake with my truck,
Just because its a 4x4 a factory stock truck is not designed to cross all types of soil or snow, they have there limits, usually not a smooth ride on the road, much different tire desine and suspension. Your brand new truck is not ready for many off road events.
Mud, snow, and sand can be a problem depending on incline, moisture level and grade.
Don't assume you can make it.
    Or you'll find yourself stuck.

      .
There was 20 other trucks down there and none of them needed to be pulled out.. Probably because they aired down.
      .
Rule #1 of sand.. air down if you spin a tire.. If you get stuck, STOP.. don't dig a hole, and air down more(or for the first time). Works on cars too.. Stuck in a little sand thing just off the road in an 86 Taurus once (before cell phones).. Finally able to just drive/float it out at about 8psi.. 15 didn't do it, 12 didn't do it, 10 didn't do it.. 8 did it. The drive to the gas station to air up was a little sketchy, but nobody had to walk 4 miles to get to a payphone at 1am.

Im from the northeast so im confused. Are offroad inspections mandatory for sand driving? The only places in New England where we have sand trails is in Rhode Island and even then you have to go get an inspection, a sticker after paying like $200 and youre required to carry adequate recovery equipment. Minimal a jack, a block of wood, a recovery strap and recovery point, marine grade fire extinguisher, flares, etc. I also carry my tire deflator, air compressor, tire repair kit with new stems, and plugs, and i plan on adding a pair of recovery boards this year as i plan on doing more beach driving than i did last year. But if youre caught without the sticker alone its i want to say a $1200 fine. Any other offroad trails with other terrains besides the samd are pretty much for the most part private property, some on state property but its a lot of ledge type rocks.

    - Matt didn't have the wheels turned sharply.
    - Matt didn't have the brakes on (front tires plowing when straight ahead instead of rolling up and over the sand).
I've been offroading since the 1960s. I know when the brakes are on whether I can see the brake lights or not.
Expedition needs an exhaust leak fixed too. But that's not MORR's problem.

Always liked Rudy when he was a regular. Also I have a cheap Jeep Wrangler, and when I put about 20 LBs in my own tires it does very good on Florida sugar sand. 255/70-18 tires, much better than original 245/75-17 tires. I also love the "RENTAL" Jeep. Do you run those tires soft or highway pressure?

I was a little afraid for mechanical parts on a couple of those. The first one, Rudy revved it to the limiter, and I was waiting for a bang........I'm glad he didn't blow mom's engine. That would have ruined the date for sure.
On the last one, there were some very angry driveline noises coming from that Dodge, and I think that's why Matt said "let's just pull it." I think he was concerned, as I was, that if he kept pushing it like that, something was going to break, and he didn't want to be driving when it did. Good call.
Thanks for sharing all the fun.

We drive the beaches on CapeCod and we always have to air down. If you get stuck, you take out a piece of plywood and your jack and jack up then fill in the holes and let a few more pounds out and keep going. Much different here than there. John from Cape COD

Modern jeeps need to be in the correct mode to either fully or partially disable traction control. Typically the sand mode let's you get all the beans, which in a 392 are many. Being aired up in the sand also didn't help. For fun, the 392 does have an exhaust baffle button. It sounds like you had them closed the whole time.
