    I first came here during Desert Storm in 1991 and lived there in 1994 when I worked as a scuba instructor at the Taba Hilton. Be aware that in Winter this is a desert climate and it can get very cold at night. I've been there in December when it was colder than London. I was last there in july 2010 and although it's changed (maybe evolved would be fairer) this is still a very friendly place to hang out, it was a bit like coming home. Simple message JUST DO IT! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

      I was in 1995, I remember sleeping underneath Burger King and then in the morning going to swim and take a shower by the beach. Great memories but the best snorkeling was in Dahab.

    11:10, I live in Eilat, and the pyramid with the damage was a cinema and a museum of wax sculptures, but the owner of the place accumulated heavy debts, so the place was closed in 2015 and only two years ago work began to demolish the pyramid, a commercial center will be built in its place

    A couple of things...
    1) There are 3 malls; Mall HaYam, The Big & Ice Mall.
    2) The pyramid used to be the IMAX Theatre. It's been vacant for many years. Sadly, due to the accumulating damage from the neglect, the building is being torn down & an apartment building is going up on the property.
    3)The city is pronounced ay-LAHT. The arabic name for the city is Umm Al-Rashrash.

    Hello YET AGAIN Island Hopper!
    I took the liberty to inquire, approaching that Jordanian fellow,
    as to why he came to the New England states of America. His reply:
    ".....For work. The economy is HERE (in the USA). Everyone in the Middle East is struggling, especially since Covid....." There you go.
    THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT ADVENTURES, past, present, FUTURE!

    • @IslandHopperTV
      @IslandHopperTV  2 роки тому +2

      Yes the economic opportunity in the USA is some of the best in the world

    • @condovo
      @condovo 2 роки тому +1

      Israel isn't struggling economically. It has one the strongest economies in the world. This past quarter, the economy grew by almost 7%. Unemployment is low at around 4%. The average salary is relatively high, at about $55,600 a year, which makes Israel richer than Austria, Germany, France, Spain, the UK, UAE, etc. The main negative economically is high prices. That said, inflation in Israel right now is "only" about 4%, half the US inflation rate of about 8%. Israelis are educated, innovative and hard-working and that shows in their successful economy.

    It's a bit difficult to get an accurate orientation from the video but I think 11:37 is the area where the Underground Pub was, that was a very lively tourist and ex-pat hang out.

    0:50 is the statue of the 'ink flag', when the IDF reached the city they didn't have a flag so someone got a white sheet and painted the Magan David on it in fountain pen ink.

    • @IslandHopperTV

      High security. You process twice through Jordan immigration booths, then twice through Israel. From Amman to Eilat is a few hours but should be smooth sailing if you do it in the day time.

    Eilat, unfortunately, is a city with tremendous UNREALIZED potential. It was hastily constructed following its capture in 1949. No effort was made to properly design or zone the city with any overarching plan for its future. It looks piecemeal, with industrial zones thrown into the midst of hotels and residential neighborhoods. Much of the coastline from Eilat to the Egyptian border is wasted on industrial-grade ports for importing cars and other goods from the Far East. The old airport was built smack in the middle of the town on prime real-estate that would have been better used for luxury resorts. It could be so much more than it is, but will likely never reach its potential...to be developed into Israel's own version of Dubai, which could draw a chunk of Israel's population from the overcrowded coastal area of metropolitan Tel Aviv, whose cost of living because of its overcrowding is among the highest in the world.

    In the early 70s I worked in the port of Eilat, loading and unloading ships. There was still a blockade of the Suez Canal at that time. It was almost literally Hell on Earth to be there. I was only there (along with other Americans, as. Well as British and Aussies) to try to make a few bucks so I could keep traveling. We looked out for each other. There were also a few Russians around there, but f**k them, nobody trusted them. I would have enjoyed having Russian friends, but they😊 just hated Americans, but maybe they really didn't hate us, they were just afraid of their own govt, which is understandable. It was so hot down in those ships, nobody moved a muscle unless they were told to. Like I said before, we all looked out for each other. At that time in history, Eilat wasn't built up and developed like it is in this video.

    Eilat perse doesn't offer anything in terms of historical value, it's a boring sleepy town. bring a lot of cash because it ain't cheap, but the surroundings and the beautiful Red Sea is what makes the place worth the visit but in that case you are better off staying in Aqaba.
