    I think they do use midi sampling and run everything through neural dsp. Tim has a whole series of “making of videos” that go into the composition of some of their songs. It’s absolutely incredible how meticulously and beautifully composed their music is. Even with all the synth and samples and effects, these guys are putting out the best music out rn hands down!

    I just want to thank you for mentioning how cool the visual aesthetic was. Starting with the stark, white room at the beginning, with their clothes, skin, and guitars being the only contrast. Then the play with the lighting inside the warehouse, using sunlight through the windows to excellent effect. I loved the choreography at the end, where they were all back-to-back shredding, then they disperse as the camera pans around and captures the cityscape in the background. The way that each guitarist had his turn on the throne was also a nice touch. Then the swing up to showcase the trumpet player at the end. All of it was great IMHO.

    I can’t answer your question on the midi sounds but I know Tim released his own neural plugin that pretty much allows anyone to get the polyphia tones.
    There was a recent video chat with polyphia and Steve Vai where Steve asked them about pedals and getting the sounds and Tim mentioned some new device they use on stage that allows them to not have to play tap tap tap with their feet. I cannot remember what it was called but Steve said he was recently made aware of it and started using it too.
    As for other songs, one of my favorites from them is an older song so is a bit more structured than their new stuff. Aviator is the name of the song and features Jason Richardson on guitar who plays one of the best solos I’ve ever heard. For a shredder, this song showcases how musical Richardson can actually be.

    Here is the link to the interview. They talk about their writing process. They get to the live playing and how they deal with the sounds. It’s called quad cortex or something like that which allows them to not have to “tap dance”.

    i saw a comment on another reaction video talking about how the music video is a representation of them ascending to god status. each scene change is a floor higher till of course they eventually end up at the top with steve. absolutely incredible.

    The harmony sound on the guitars sounds like a Whammy pedal without pedal actuation, it creates a synthlike hamony in real time.

    I can't help but wonder if Zappa would have liked this. I like going right back and listening to songs like Stevie's Spanking to see how Vai has changed over the years.

      I'm pretty sure Zappa would have loved Polyphia and would have wanted to collab with them too had they been making music at the same time.

      @@RaymondBCrisp I'm not convinced, Zappa was all about improvisation as a guitarist, and expression and satire as a composer, popy beats and an emphasis on technique were not his inclinations as I understand it.

    • @RaymondBCrisp
      @RaymondBCrisp Рік тому

      @@saulnine7786 Zappa was also drawn to virtuosos, which Polyphia certainly classify as. He was also into non-mainstream music, which describes what Polyphia does to a tee. I think you underestimate Zappa's open-mindedness. Polyphia have a unique method of song composition. I feel these points carry more weight than what you present and indeed, Zappa would work with Polyphia. Improvisation can be learned and will be, with maturity. Polyphia's members have plenty of time to mature.

    • @saulnine7786

      @@RaymondBCrisp Yes, I expected such a defence, and you may well be right. Interesting to think about at any rate.
      My perception is that there is a multifaceted malaise that has settled over music (and humanity in general) progressively over the last several decades.
      While there are a few fringe innovators, most progress is in technical aspects, while the complexity of thought and expression has radically declined.
      Zappa was cynical about the state of music and society, from the beginning really, but especially from the 80s onwards. I don't think his attitude would have been helped by seeing how things are today.
      All this is not to denigrate Polyphia, but more to point out how things have changed, and the worrying state of humanity as is also reflected in music.
