As a norwegian, I know norwegians first of all think about Jamaicans as a happy, smiling, welcoming and friendly people. (Even with a troubling past). And nice, warm and beatutiful nature. And good food. Originally music, Mostly Reggae music and later dancehall ,its HUGE in Norway. Steriotypical (not in a bad way) norwegians use back in the days to think of all Jamaicans as rastafarians (Through Reggae music/culture). In all my experience is thats norwegians always felt some special bonds with Jamaicans. We are a part of mainland Europe but through history always felt like an "island" :-)
I will always say this, if I should be reincarnated and had a choice I would still want to come back as a Jamaican! We definitely can relate to each other in any circumstances even with just one look. Jamaicans are truly warm and friendly and approachable wherever we go. Great interview.
Thank you. This was a boost for my norwegian ego, and also a great lesson in itergration. When people from the other side of the planet likes my country and society I feel glad and proud. In my youth I was very political active and outspoken. There's a lot of tensions in Norwegian politics, but most of the parties agree on one thing. They all want to make life as good as possible for theyr neighboour. As in all other countries we have the problem of politicans getting high on theyr power, but overall Norway has little coruption. And that leads to a high level of trust among people. I see the consept of imigration and multiculture as a natural, and very positive part of a nations evolment into a good place to be a citisen. I hope you find a good life here despite of the huge differences in life style from Jamaica. And remember that your Jamaican heritage is a positive imput in to the Norwegian way of living
A fun interview to watch! It's always interesting to see how someone from a completely different culture reacts to living in Scandinavia. Hope you're doing good:) Both of you seem like really nice people!
Xavier, thank you so much for such an enlightening informational/interactive presentation. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was blessed by the new knowledge - especially by the variety, the number, and the intelligence of the Jamaicans who so ably represented our island home. Maybe time is of the essence, but whenever you can squeeze in a question about the interviewee's educational background, In what capacity he/she might be employed, how the new language was acquired - if that is relevant - and whether there might be a spouse/partner in the picture, it would be invaluable. Thank you for your most interesting programming. Success to you and yours.
No Country in the world that can compare it self to Norway a country that takes care of her children even if you came from another country, to me it's a good and care, and above all the beauty and nature of Norway is unbelievable

As a or an? norwegian i loved this interview whit its positiive vibe. Yes, we are from different cultures. But with positive thinking everything can melt down in one pot. And we can live in togetherness. Thank you bouth ps. Norway is not only six month of darkness and cold.
I remember some years back that Terri said to the newspaper where she live in Norway that concerning the winter weather she liked the stable and very cold periods of winter with perfectly blue skies. A feature of Norway which is unknown to Jamaica.

My family and I went to Norway two years ago from St. Lucia. I'm Guyanese and he is from India. My husband cooked a curry chicken and our host loved it. She keeps asking for more.
On her last topic for research, i remember my collegue went to Jamaica in the late 70's to help setting up ibm mainframe computers to run their social services.
Hi Terri, it was very interesting listening to you answering the questions asked by Xavier!!! I am Jamaican living in Germany and one of my daughters lives in Norway so it was of special interest to me to hear your answers. Where in Norway do you live? My daughter is way up north. Tek care
Does she speak the language, how long did it take for her to learn the language, where in Norway does she live, has she traveled beyond her City to other places in Norway, has she faced racism in Norway, does she plan to live permanently in Norway and finally did she miss Jamaica? These are the points of interest I would like to hear from any of these interviews. Pleasant interview however but I was looking for more.
Jac P, in every country there is racism every country in the world when you're in your country you don't see it unless you travel, but one thing you have to learn is once you're in some body country you have to focus on what you went there for, some of us we wish our country with all their racism they can take care of their people, you think i blem any country if their racist no i will blem my country leaders and not the one who had gave me shelter
The lack of superficiality in the nordic countries is key. It often gets confused as shyness, arrogance, or anti-socialness by people from countries that have less reserved cultures. When I was in the US, and even in the UK, I occasionally experienced that people assumed I was perhaps a bit cold or introverted because I didn't respond to social cues like, smiling as you walk past someone, for instance. I don't choose to not smile because I'm not happy to see them, it just doesn't come naturally to me to force a smile unless I'm so happy that it comes naturally. Some people here learn to adapt to social cues such as these, but I personally prefer our honest approach to things. I don't see the purpose in saying "I'm sorry" for something just to "keep up appearance".
The level of light and dark doesn't flip from one state to the other on a days notice - I hope this is understood. You might get that impression listening to the conversation. It's a gradual transition when the light gradually disappears towards winter solstice, then gradually comes back ( always!) and gradually increases towards summer solstice. At the darkest , just before Christmas, she still enjoys about 6-7 hours of daylight where she lives in Norway.
we learn English at school from we are 5-6 years old and it's going on in all the years we are studying. So Norwegians are relatively good in English, some also learn more languages in school later on as German, French and Spanish. When you are an English speaker, Norwegian language should be easy to learn.
I turned down even tasting Smalahove (sheep's head), when it was offered to the students as a dare in college. Hardly anyone wanted to taste it, so the school upped the ante by offering a $100 prize to whoever was able to eat a small portion of it. From what I recall, only 1 or 2 people in the entire college took them up on the offer, and a really small number of people tasted it at all. It's a tradition that has remained since Norway was a poor country with scarce resources in general, but it's still very, very niche, and considered disgusting by people who aren't extremely conservative/traditional and live in remote areas, from my experience.
And I'm sure I'm not the only one in this country who doesn't like seafood. I know we export a lot of it, but I've lost count of how many times foreigners from all corners of the world has told me, or suggested that we eat a lot of fish here. I really don't think we eat more fish than any other country. People who really like fish, eat a lot of fish. I imagine it's the same anywhere in the world :) Some parts of this country definitely eat more of it than other parts, though. I hear they eat fish on Christmas Eve in the south, which makes absolutely no sense to me.
