@@ExploringTheSmoke For sure man, best sport on earth. It's a bit of a double edged sword marrying into a footy dynasty but you seem to enjoy it and the more people around the world we can show what a spectacle the game is the better off we all are dude. Nice start :)
South Aussie here (crows supporter, bad season this year but that happens), tackles and bumps between the shoulders and knees are completely legal no matter how hard they are, although they can become penalised if the player being tackled or bumped gets a concussion either from the tackle or from hitting the ground. Injuries are super common, every game (maybe the rare few dont) has players getting injured but they play with passion. You arent actually allowed to elbow other players, must be using your forearm or upper arm and side of body of youre going to bump.
The worst collisions are when 2 players are running flat chat to take a mark ( catch the ball ) and collide head first.......it is sickening , can be close to a 50 mph impact, and can be team mates .
I follow an AFL team from South Australia (Adelaide "Crows"). One of our players (Izak Rankine) got taken out by an opposition player Dan Houston (from Port Power) in a completely targeted attack. As a result Izak is still not fully recovered some 3 weeks later. I believe Dan Houston got suspended (banned from playing for 4 weeks) from the AFL Tribunal for this bump.

I think Sydney Swans had a player called Mike Pyke and I believe he player Rugby Union in Canada before he played Aussie Rules footy here. He played about a decade ago as a ruckman for Sydney. As for best hit I always think one of the best hits/bumps that was legal was a match Michael Voss, times his bump so well he took out two Collingwood players at same time and bounced out of the position without hurting himself. He was a really skillful player but was also brilliant at the physical contact part for the sport. The sport itself in this fully professional era is starting to really make things that used to be considered legal now open to suspensions. They trying to protect the head so much that there not much room for accidents to be seen as just that, accidents in a contact sport. Yet, Petracca can take life threatening car crash like injuries and the player involved can get off scot free, because it doesn't involve the head. Talk about double standards when certain teams are involved.
Attempts have been made to moderate the game to a certain degree. But if you look at film from say, the 90's on back, it was very, very rough and tumble. It is worth noting a player cannot be sent off from the game they are playing in. But a tribunal can be held post-game resulting in player fines and/or suspensions.
Many of the hits are legal, but most players take any advantage and hope to get away with murder. As Hawthorn hard man and lunatic , Dermott Brereton, admitted in an interview......." Hawthorn don't pay me to be nice to the opposition ". Dermott was also a highly skilled and talented UNDERSIZED forward. A lunatic because he often hurt himself more than his target, but refused to show pain or leave the field. He played a whole grand final, over 2 hours of bruising, tough football, with brocken ribs AND a split kidney.
These are pretty mild compared to 5 or 10 years ago, let alone 20 years ago. The AFL now severely punish any player with long suspensions for anything head high or deemed to be dangerous. I played from 8 years old in 1973 until 2000 and I miss the old days, you can get hurt playing and I got my share of concussions but the game today barely resembles the game I grew up watching and playing.
@@iankearns774 thank you Ian, I can understand the game becoming a little softer especially if it means the players get to have longer careers...though I do love a strong tackle haha
A lot of these hits are are illegal now due to concussion rules so duty of care rules apply. No rugby players have made it to AFL though they have tried to bring in some great rugby players they just haven't worked for reasons like 360 degree game, running 12 plus K's a game, 2 hours of playtime so endurance is a major aspect then you have to kick the ball...
Hardly any of these ones are illegal, even today. Most are completely legal. A Canadian International Rugby Union player made the transition years ago. Mike Pyke played 110 games for Sydney between 2009-2015. The Rugby players you're thinking about were Rugby League players, Isreal Falou and Karmichael Hunt. Both were Australian international players, Falou wasn't any good in the AFL, kept getting injured but Karmichael Hunt was OK, not great but OK, played in the midfield a bit too.
@@ExploringTheSmoke The only one's in this video that are illegal today are: 2:34 he hit his head going for the man. 3:58 same as above 4:31 same as above 4:40 This one depends if he's catching the ball from a kick or a handball, if kick (more than 15m) then illegal. You can't hit/block/tackle a player going for a mark (ie: catching a ball from a kick that's traveled more than 15m in the air) Defenders can either go for the mark themselves or spoil, spoiling is punching the ball away. Players have been KOed by players spoiling the ball and it's completely legal (even today) as long as the defending players only intent is the ball. 5:03 Pretty 50/50 some players would get away with it but it's technically there. 6:00 yeah punched him in the head while marking/catching. 6:44 You can't take their legs if below the knees, it's considered tripping which is illegal. 7:21 you can't push off someone while making contact to the neck. One I'm totally not sure about for today's rules is the second tackle at 1:55. Could be considered dumping/dangerous tackle but generally they need to be a "2 motion" tackle whereas this is more in the 1 motion. Totally legal at the time though. Some of those high elbow hits you were talking about were not head hits. Hope this helps.

Unlike the original, most, but not all, of these were legal. No, an elbow to the face is not legal. Tackles must be made between the shoulders and the knees. I am not aware of any English rugby players who played AFL. There have been a couple of Australian rugby league players to tried it but were not up to it. In my opinion, Aussie rules requires better fitness, more skills and more peripheral awareness than rugby because your opponent can be anywhere around you, whereas in rugby, you can generally see your opponent in front of you. There have been many Irishmen (mostly Gaelic footballers, although there is an Irish ex-rugby player playing for Hawthorn currently) who have had successful careers in the AFL, including one (Jimmy Stynes) who won the Brownlow Medal, which is awarded to the best and fairest player for the year. There was a Canadian rugby player, Mike Pyke, who used to play for Sydney. Mason Cox is an American (now Australian citizen) ex-basketball player who plays for Collingwood.
I don't know of any British rugby or soccer players making it in the AFL. Rugby players rarely have the stamina required and soccer players are way too soft.

@@pauldobson2529 Paul!! Thank you for the incredible comment, I'll have to have a butchers at Mike Pyke, thank you for the knowledge, I'm glad you're here
Yet, Petracca can take life threatening car crash like injuries and the player involved can get off scot free, because it doesn't involve the head.
@@blainecole5452 ahhh so almost after a peer review your punish is given, I quite like that 💪🏻

Yeah that there is a man who understood his job requirements....but damn, split kidney?? He's an absolute trooper

You can tackle anywhere below the shoulders and above the knees.

Thank you bramba for the knowledge!! I appreciate you answering
....most? 😂 Glad you're enjoying the reaction off1 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@ExploringTheSmoke
The only one's in this video that are illegal today are:
2:34 he hit his head going for the man.
3:58 same as above
4:31 same as above
4:40 This one depends if he's catching the ball from a kick or a handball, if kick (more than 15m) then illegal.
You can't hit/block/tackle a player going for a mark (ie: catching a ball from a kick that's traveled more than 15m in the air)
Defenders can either go for the mark themselves or spoil, spoiling is punching the ball away.

OK, this vid HAS been cleaned up, it all seems to be legal, the rough, illegal stuff edited out.
One example of a contact that was edited out. An example would be; "Barry Hall punching Brent Staker". Find it, for your own use. It's funny now, but serious then. Barry had a temper problem, retired and became a pro boxer.

No English rugby players, league or union, have transitioned to AFL; neither have any NFL players. Only 1 American has played AFL - Mason Cox. Two Australians have played both rugby and AFL - Ray Millington in 1952, and Karmichael Hunt in 2011
You're a legend Gamortie! Thank you for answering
It’s not all tackles mate. Ruby players would not be suitable to big and bulky. There are a lot skills, lots of running on a huge field, jumping up on players shoulders for a mark etc. You need to watch a full game. 😂
@@dianneking3616 oh no I know it's not all tackles that's why I ask if any rugby players have ever actually successfully transitioned....the answer so far is a huge resounding NO 😂

@Pokersmith you mean Lee Mathews King hitting Neville Bruns , what a dog of an act , but that was Mathews , a champion , not in my opinion , sneak goer, Robbie Flower , there is a champion , 6 stone ringing wet , a true champion, Mathews a product of his time , but just dirty , vicious, Look at the Bruns hit , how's that ok , weak dog Mathews
I can see how many Gaelic football players would be able to transition and thank you for keeping me up to date on the hits 🤘🏻💪🏻
