Just finished installing heated grips on my 2024 KTM 790 Adventure. Thanks for this video! My install was just as easy and identical to yours. (The dealer wanted to charge me $250 in labor if they did the work!)

Installed mine today. I wasn't so lucky to have the heated grip connector so accessible. It took me about two hours to wiggle my hand behind the battery compartment until I could push it out through the front to where I could hook up to it. You would think KTM would put a little more effort into making this more accessible given how many adventure riders like to run with heated grips. Also, I noticed that you didn't install the module that it came with underneath the fuse box. The fuse box actually comes off and slides onto the top of the plastic cage it comes with and the heated grip module goes in the bottom of that plastic cage. Makes it nice and clean.

Thank you so much John! After 9 months my heated grips finally came in a couple weeks ago and I have been trying to find some clear directions ever since. Unfortunately my plug was buried in the center of the frame and could not be accessed from the front so off came the tank. It gave me an excuse to clean out the built up dust and grime from last summers adventures anyway. Great video!!

Hi Chris! You are very welcome, glad to do it! However, truth be told, if I had to remove my tank, it would have slowed me way down to the point where the video likely wouldn't exist. Good job on pushing through and finding the heated grip plug. 💪 The rest of the install will be easy compared to that task. Next I'll do the heated seat installation video. Thanks for chiming in so that others know that plug can be hiding deep under the tank sometimes. Thank you also for the positive feedback! Keep riding and enjoy that awesome 890! 👌

Thanks for a very informative video, just installed mine. Luckily my plug was easily accessible like yours was. My biggest problem was getting the T 15 torx into the grips to get them off, they appear to be at such a wierd angle and not easy to locate the torx bit into the screww head. Anyway all done now and works a treat, thanks for a great video.

Thanks John, much obliged for the video. Also thanks to the gent below in the comments who explained how to get the install manual. I fitted the grips and HCU to my Norden, just have to wait for the bracket now to tidy it up. I didn't have to go to the dealer to get my grips activated (US bike), but maybe during the Explorer mode install the tech activated the grips without realizing? Just a thought, just glad to have them working. Very impressed with the engineering in this bike, the ease in which you can work on it. The comparison between fitting the windscreen on my Norden vs my Norge is unreal. Italian design can be gorgeous, but working on them is not so great!

Claudio, you shouldn't have to go to the dealer to activate the OEM heated grips. You do have to plug in that HCU module, near the battery as John shows. Note that KTM also sells heated grips with a push button controller that you mount to the handlebar - it does not come with the HCU module & is not controlled through the TFT dashboard menu.

  • @hungwasson1399
    @hungwasson1399 2 роки тому +9

Great video John. As to KTM providing step by step instructions...they do! That slip of paper sent you to the right place, but didn't explain what to do next. You don't download the Owners Manual again (assuming you downloaded it originally). You scroll down the page further, and find the "Apparel & Technical Accessories Manuals" section, and enter the part number for the accessory you are installing, then click search. I tried it with part # 63712964088 - which should be for the heated grips & HCU unit like you purchased. I then downloaded the "Fitting Instructions (for) Heated Grip Kit" PDF document. The download link simply says "Owners Manual", and the file name is an unhelpful "V2", but the document clearly states what it is on the front page when you open it. Inside, you find detailed step by step instructions with pictures (printed in five languages - jump to the suitable section).
Glancing through the instructions, it looks like you're missing a black plastic mounting bracket that the HCU clips into, which then gives you a place to mount the fuse box on top of the bracket - then the entire assembly goes where the fuse box was. See pages 11-12 of the English section of the instructions. I don't think it's strictly necessary, and what you did is fine....

Your post was so helpfull. I have the bracket and could not figure out where it went. after you said fuse box on top I knew what to do. remove the fuse block housing, slip in new bracket in fuse block spot, put fuse block on top of new bracket and control module attaches to the front of the new bracket. I tried to download instructions just as you said with part number but no luck. it just wont go to the next step of the instruction download but with your information its very easy to figure out how to install the bracket. For those looking for the pigtail at front of frame under the triple clamp, it has a sticker around the wiring harness just below the connector that says heated grip.

I've installed two of these HCU kits. I can tell you that the wire harness white plug is like a Easter egg hunt. Bike number 1 had the connector under the tank on the left side but access to it was after removing the battery box assembly enough to almost shove it out of the way. My wife's small hands were required to make the connection.
On bike number 2 it was visible after removing the tank and came in from the right side of the frame. But not enough to connect it. I was able to connect through the frame members on the right side. Man they made this difficult. The other challenge was figuring out how the throttle side plastic bit was supposed to go together. That entire exercise could have been engineered better.
I'll take Hung's word for it but I could not find the instructions. In my book this was a pain in the rear.

John excellent video. There will be many people with 890 Adventure R looking at this video. I own a Maintenance Manual for the 890 and it does not even mention where the Heater Control Unit is or goes. I am awaiting my Heater Grip Kit any day. They hard to come by these days. According to my local KTM Dealer they are on backorder until Dec 2022. Ouch huh. My local KTM dealer was able to give me other KTM Dealers that showed the Heater Grip Kit in stock. I lucked out the first Dealer I called had one and I grabbed it. I was able to find my Heater Grip Cable on the right side of my frame by the neck. Like you said very easy to get to. I also found the HCU Dummy Plug right side of the bike right behind the Fuse box under the seat. Again the Maintenance Manual does not even tell you where these connections are or how to find them. Buyer beware because there are some Web Sites out there that will direct you to a KTM Heated Grips supposedly for the 890 R. Do not fall for it. You need the Heated Grips and tHe HCU Kit in order for the Heated Grips to work with the TFT Display. So now I am fighting with the company to take their Heated Grips back that are not for the 890 R yet their Web Site directed me to them. False Advertising. Great video/tutorial keep them coming. Great video. I have been waiting on those since last spring. I wonder when they will show up? The throttle side is a better setup than my Super Duke. On that bike I needed to restrict steering head motion in order to prevent the plastic wire guide that is molded to the grip from hitting the gas tank. The guide broke and I need to replace the assembly. First installation was done by a KTM dealer, so they warrantied the part.

You're very welcome, glad to be able to help out. Good question, yes, mine did work without being activated through the dealership as it showed up in dash display where I only had to let the console know that it was installed by clicking on "heated grips" and then "installed". However, my only question is that I did pay to have the dealer install the "tech pack" when the bike was new and I don't know if these functions are added with that addition or not. So in summary, if you had the Tech Pack installed, you should be good to go. However, if you didn't I can't say for sure since I haven't tried the install without Tech Pack. Maybe someone out there without the Tech Pack installed could chime in and let us know if Heated grips show up on the console? Actually, look on your bike under "motorcycle" and see if there is a "heated grip" option there or if there is anything under "settings". Give it a try and report back. I can be more specific with my directions if you see the heated grips option show up.

Yes, when you plug them in and they are all installed you go back into to your screen and activate them and they can then be controlled by your screen using the left sided handlebar buttons, pretty slick as you can adjust them or turn them off or on while you ride via the screen. You are correct. Put a different way, once you have everything plugged in and installed, the bike "recognizes" that they are there and allows you to activate them.

Good question. I had a 790R that the dealer installed heated grips on and the grip wiring harness I believe tied in behind the headlight but I could be wrong. With the 790 the heated grips are controlled by a switch on the handlebar. They worked well, but were not integrated into dash console. Ride on!

Is there a way to buy only the grip sleeve so I don't have to cut my old grips?

The old grips do need to be removed to install the heated grips. Great to have in the cold though! :)

@Oregon Moto John I was thinking of installing Oxford grips because I heard of the ktm one's not being warm enough. What's your take?

Solderpro_1 I LOVE Oxford grips and have had them on every bike I own except the 890. I am a huge fan of those!. The Oxford grips will not disappoint and will work well. The KTM grips integrate well with the LCD display which is the main reason I went with them. They do get adequately hot and I have never needed them warmer, but the Oxfords will cook eggs if you want. 😉

You're lucky that the connector on the bike was just laying there for you, mine is nowhere to be found... Looks like I'll have to remove the tank to find it.

That is good to know for other riders, but soooo sorry to hear that as you will have many extra steps to complete the job. Best of luck on getting the job done! Keep riding!
