what's superb about this roll even the most rudiment version works. Motown is 1.5 hours south of here :) Stood in the studio / room that the vibe was captured. not much in there - a half drum kit bolted to the floor, piano and partial mixing desk . but you can get why they liked that room - it was tight but key was people played together not in seperates - only vocals were seperates during that 'special' period and they were simply closets connected to that room.
Excellent! Succinct, informative, short & sweet. This is one of my favourite fills. I hadn't come across your channel before, but subscribed straight away. If all your videos are like this then I might cancel my all my other subscriptions! This is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for.
There are! Infinite others in fact, but I'd consider this one the definitive "Motown" fill. Check out "Reach Out I'll Be There" from Grade 4 for some other examples (and pretty much any other Motown tune for that matter!): ua-cam.com/video/Tw9Zdzfoip4/v-deo.html
I use this fill a lot and not just in Motown type stuff. You'll hear it on ‘Dancing in the Streets’ (Martha and the Vandellas) but also as the intro to Frank Zappa's ‘Peaches en Regalia’ on Tinseltown Rebellion (there are dozens of versions of that number). Tinseltown Rebellion is a live album with Chad Wackerman on drums (great name for a drummer 😄. He's also my favourite Zappa drummer)).

Brilliant, really helpful lesson Mike thank you. Just a question of nailing those diddles. "Just" 😂
Nail them yet?
Can you tell me some drum fills for soca music
Hey Mike you've covered this fill in a previous video. Are there also alternative fills that work with a Motown groove?

@@MikeBarnesDrums Thanks Mike. ps... do you know a drummer in C'Bridge called Pete Carter? Used to know him.
