Rolex "NOS" Problem: Owner Cannot Wear His Submariner

- A Discussion around Rolex and the "New Old Stock" effect. A viewer spent nearly 20 years waiting to own a 16610 Rolex Submariner, buying many other pieces along the way. After buying a New Old Stock model he feels conflicted to wear it, not being able to justify the price he paid for it as well as wanting to keep the watch in NOS Condition. A difficult question to answer...

For those of you wondering, I removed the stickers shortly after sending the email to IDGuy and have been wearing the watch, like all others, without concern for the inevitable wear and tear. I think it was a matter of unlocking the fault feeling of not buying it at retail when I had the opportunity and paying a premium I was strongly against. It took a few days to overcome the buyer’s remorse and realize it was the watch I wanted the most and the longest. As for the collection, I think it is well balanced and decided not to sell for now. As watch enthusiasts, we know how easy it is to lust after the “next” watch and overlook the ones we have. Thank you IDGuy for the video.
My pleasure and I really hope the community feedback has been helpful as well! The common answer seems to be "wear the damn thing" ;) It was great fun discussing your collection, Bernardo. Thank you for the opportunity!
Congratulations on your choice and this bold move, I believe you will be happy with this acquisition. What came to my mind is since the watch was sitting dormant for 11 years, should you service the watch right now as well? Oils must have dried out by now or they got congested.
My father had a submariner for 17 years and asked me to sell it for him. I did I was not really into watches at the time and he doubled his money after all that use. Bought it new at an AD and he enjoyed the hell out of it. I wish I had not sold it but at the same time a bit after I really got into watches. Point of my story wear it enjoy it and love it. I don't have a relationship with Rolex anymore I have owned a few and I have my own version in the Pelagos that I enjoy like my did his sub. I think my dad chased that watch all his life. Cheers
Zeeraha Watch is running fast at 4 seconds/day, winding smooth as butter.
@@watchound.bernardo9738 I really do not wish to get you worried, I only wish to help, but my advice in any case would be to take any newly bought watch to the good local watchmaker and ask if the positional rates are satisfactory, including corresponding amplitudes and beat errors, even if you feel the watch is running well. This is just to make sure that there are no hidden defects and you could do the service if needed (hopefully you do not need it). Your Rolex is a superlative chronometer, and by the factory specs it is expected to run - 2/+2 seconds per day, but since it is not a brand new watch, rates may naturally differ from the factory specs. In any case, enjoy the watch, it is a good catch :)
A rolex funatic friend of mine bought gmt 2 black after calling all retaillers everymorning for 6months. Hearing “on stock”, he took a day off and took train 300 mile to get that. He looked so happy and told me the minute he left the store, the premium was 5k. Almost an year has past but he still did not removed the plastic on the watch being affraid of losing value. It’s just sad.
Enjoy the watch before you get too old!!! Your kids will sell it on ebay once you are gone.
...and then some much less sentimental person will casually rip the stickers right off and wear it.
This poor soul does not own watches, they own him.
pilotstyle......i agree with you 100%, but collecting is a strange concept. and i mean collecting anything. i collect watches and can commiserate with this guy. i have a vast knife collection which are never used, just looked at and oiled once in a while. i suppose it is possible to enjoy the watch while never wearing it
@@JohnSmith-gs2rv i do agree with you, but at the same time collecting has a different meaning to different folks. how people enjoy things is a personal decision. watch collecting is a strange hobby. if you look at them as tools you would only have a single watch and wear it until it broke before you got a new one.

@@jh-il5sb Ha! I have a strange knife collecting hobby too. All artisan knives (mostly french), from some of the top makers like Erwan Pinceman, Manu LaPlace, Michael Moing ..... I don't use them, I just hone them and polish them!! Us collectors are indeed a strange bunch !!
phenomenal. your channel has become "must watch" for anyone who's serious about this passion.
That really means a lot, William. Thank you so much for this comment (made me grin this evening)
My story was bit different, I saw the Omega Seamaster Professional 225450 on the display of a watch store in 2000, I decided I'm gonna own this piece, though it was way above what I could afford, I started saving each month, I saw so many watches in that time, but the thought in the back of my mind was always "it won't be that Omega" so I saved for 7 years, and after that, I went to the same watch store and picked one up. It was the most satisfying feeling in the world (that is until my first son was born 😀). It's the first watch in my collection and it will never leave my collection.
Feeling you’ve overpaid for a watch that is then so valuable you don’t feel you can wear it...all the fun sucked out right there. Way to go, Rolex, your relentless price manipulation has lead to this.
no, speculators and flippers have lead to this.
@@Thomas-vq5pb No, artificial scarcity and needless waiting lists have caused this. Speculators and flippers are the result, not the cause.
@@numberstation What exactly is artificial scarcity? Rolex's reticence to make more sports watches?
@@Thomas-vq5pb Do you think Rolex have difficulty supplying enough watches to those who wish to buy them?
@@numberstation I think it's Rolex policy to make x numbers of watches per year of which. x % are sports watches. As we speak, about 8'000 Rolex are listed. on Chrono 24 as 2020 unworn models...

Life is very short. Take off the stickers, enjoy the watch and think about the other pieces in your collection. It doesn’t matter what you paid for this piece, it’s immaterial unless you intend to sell it, if you don’t, forget about it and be happy. You have a brand new watch that deserves to be worn, used and loved, it’s spent too long just being admired in a box.
Mark - well said!
💯👍
A little bit like the dog that caught the car he'd been chasing forever...now what!?!
When this punter kicks the bucket, his kids will sell the watch for a fraction of value. They'll walk into a pawn shop, and the owner will offer 5k cash. The kids say fine, take the cash and laugh about their old man who was overly sentimental and romantic. Then the pawn shop flips it to a dealer for a tidy profit. The dealer then finds the next overly romantic punter who has been looking for this watch for 20 years. He charges that poor sap a king's ransom. The cycle continues until you break it dammit. Just wear the bloody watch and get on with life.
Don't give this watch to your kids... Moral of the story :)
Hahaha well said
5k my ass. From a, or any pawn shop. Maybe 1.5 - 2 k.
Reminds me as the great man once said. There are two great tragedies in life. Not getting what your heart desires. And getting it...
“After a time, you may find that ‘having’ is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as “wanting.” It is not logical, but it is often true.”
Koji Attwood quite often building a thing up on a pedestal in one’s mind then actually experiencing it in reality can be poles apart. I finally tried on a panda dial ceramic Daytona at an AD and felt absolutely no love for the watch in the metal in the slightest. I just thought... meh... like taking a super model out for dinner and finding her vacant and over made up. Mutton dressed as lamb perhaps.
Koji Attwood having also brings new responsibilities. The very expensive investment may need babying. To be kept safe. To be kept in pristine condition. And so on. It’s no longer a photo, a video review or a website article. It’s in your hands 24/7. You now need to take up ownership. It’s appeal may quickly fade once the honeymoon wears off. A new itch may form for something else. You may need to consider offloading. Haha! The watch game is such a nonsense. That’s why I’m sticking with what I’ve got. Save my pennies for a rainy day.

@@underachievingwatchcollect1878 Good catch! That quote actually made a big impression on me as a kid.
Dont buy watches to substitute the one you really want. Wait and save and buy what you really want. Be patient and persistent.
Sold off all my Rolex watches for the same reason. I'm just not wearing a watch that costs thousands and I'm not owning a watch I can't wear. I was fortunate to buy Rolex before they became ridiculous and I wore them for years. No longer. The cash I received was invested and I could easily buy back what I sold and have money left over. It's much more enjoyable to collect what I can wear.
I guess you get more pleasure from money than what it can buy.
Come on man, it’s a tool watch! Don’t be a tool! Wear the damn thing!
I always thought they were called tool watches because they are being worn by tools.
My all time favorite line; Gonna keep it new for the next guy?
Point made.
Great video. Thank you!
From experience the guilt of overpaying for a watch would cause me to want to get rid of it. But probably best keeping and slowly getting used to it. That’s what I did!
I almost become a collector that would have many Seikos, hamiltons and few microbrands. However, I decided to go mid-high level where I would enjoy feeling higher quality watches. its barely reachable but its still reachable
Well done
Nice video mate.
I’m going to be a little harsh here, and I do apologize in advance. The problem is this gentleman had his goal watch set, but didn’t keep his eye on the prize, and got distracted with these other watches. Don’t make this mistake, people. Don’t buy watches as stopgap solutions for your grail, because they will never fill that void (the Explorers were great choices, though). Wear your Submariner, sir, and stop denying yourself the pleasure of enjoying that watch. Conquer your anxiety of feeling disappointment, and remind yourself of the journey and the work it took to finally own your grail. “Better memories with fewer pieces”, to paraphrase IDGuy.
Chi-Town - couldn't have said it better. And, believe me your words are far far from harsh.
Tudor black bay where it is at. Cheap enough to use for everything. Expensive enough to give outstanding quality.
You will never truly know the joy of owning the watch unless you wear it. Remove the tags and stickers, put it on your wrist and enjoy it, just as you would have done 18 years ago, only it will mean even more to you now because you waited.
This wonderful Vid got me to subscribe...
Sell the NOS one and buy another one worn but in very good condition...and they lived happily ever after....

Incredibly profound! Thank you for this Dogbear!
Honestly- that’s 100% true
Rolex produces the same amount of watches as Omega. Almost a million watches a year. You can buy most Omega watches at any time. You can't do that with Rolex, as we all know. But is this really Rolex fault? Are we correct to demand from them to expand their production, only because we want more? I am not so sure.
Yes, they can increase supply of in demand models.
@@michaelriera6277 they already did that
Interesting, I was convinced that Riley sells much more units than Omega. I guess it was all due to the current Rolex hype.
Solid video, went through similar steps, too.
If you can sell the submariner for about what you paid do it and find a good used example for less and feel better wearing it! A Rolex submariner should NOT be a safe queen! Welcome 🙏 to watch collecting!!
Jesus, 18 years in limbo, I feel sorry for this person. Anyhow, great video.
Nice, but I'm still in love with my humble O&W M5 which I bought new in 1995 for £220.............
I do own a c-1000, O&W is a great brand
Love your channel You've come a long way , I've been with you since you were putting NATO's on Parnis ! Great job my friend 👍
And it means so much to me that you've stuck with me ever since, Junior. You are such a gent. And I hope you had an incredible birthday last week!
Dear @IDGuy, thanks for sharing this story! Quite romantic but also very pragmatic I’d say. Although I share the vast majority of your thoughts on this particular subject/collection, I disagree with you on one point: the Exp. 14270 is (MUST be?) a keeper for this lad. And yes: he should wear his grail Sub because it’s simply meant for.
Great video and even better advice IDGuy. I would keep the Explorer and the Explorer 2 and sell the rest. Most importantly wear and enjoy that Submariner.
Sell because there not Rolex I'd say keep them you won't get much for them and their not bad pieces.
Excellent advice but I will say this: if this was truly his grail watch he would quickly forget the price he paid and just enjoy it, unless of course he really couldn't afford it.
that black explorer II can hang with any watch...
Quite simple. Wear the watch. You wanted it, you paid a lot for it, enjoy it. Love your channel, your voice is soothing at this time. I own one Rolex, it's a current generation Explorer. I can only speak for myself, if I get another Rolex, it will be one of those new OP's in green, or Milgauss. Like you and going through this journey have a few Tudor's, Navy BB58, Pelagos and GMT. Since I got my Explorer pre owned and less then a year old, it already has gone up in value a little. I do need to sell some watches I don't wear, a Sinn, some Seiko's, Orient's and an Oris before I buy anything else.
I’m so pleased I watched this, I’ve wanted a sub for decades, I was never able to afford one, now I can I’m actually having broken sleep worrying whether to get one, it wouldn’t effect me financially, I bought a OP 36 last year, 369 blue dial, it’s absolutely stunning, but it’s not a sub, I’m going to get one!
Back in 2010, I wanted to get into Rolex and buy a Submariner. I initially started looking at used but due to lack of experience, switched gears and decided for new. The only problem, the 16610 were no longer being produced as Rolex was already gearing up for the 116610LN Ceramic sub and I didn't 1.) Like the maxi dial and case and 2.) the retail price increase over the outgoing 16610 ($6,000 for the 16610 vs $7,800 for the 116610LN). So all that was out was what the dealers had left in stock. At the time, my local AD just sold a no engraved rehaut Z serial 2 days before I called. I located a rehaut engraved M serial at a northern Illinois AD and left work early to make the 2 hour trip and bought it on the spot. I believe I was not alone in seeking to own the last of the new 16610's and after making the purchase, the AD told me there were 2 strong buyers, one coming from a neighboring state. Even though the AD knew it was hot being the last ones, they still obliged with a small discount of 7.5% and threw in an addition link for my eight inch wrist so I basically paid the retail price out the door minus Illinois's hefty 7.5% sales tax. To this day, I hardly wear it so it shows as brand new NOS with zero scratches. My GMT Master gets all the wrist time.
Great piece and good to hear you are now happily wearing the sub. Wear it and enjoy it.
I agree, wear your Submariner and make new memories!
I have a pretty good watch collection and the favorite is a seiko skx I heavily modded. It’s mine, one of a kind and although cheaper in parts is more valuable cuz it’s used way more often.
fantastic advice, I'd keep three watches only the Submariner the Explorer and the Speedmaster. A great video.
I’ve wanted a Submariner since seeing one on the wrist of a colleague in 1986. I received a gold Date as a gift that year, which reduced the desire, but in 2017 I bought a 116610LN during a lull in prices, new, at a discount. I’ve enjoyed wearing it, despite the scratches and little dings. I also know it’s grown in value even though it’s been worn. Win win!
You almost make that series of poor decisions sound poetic 😁 ...but in all seriousness I say wear it.
Wear it. It wants to be worn. It wants to be loved and experienced. If you don't your just saving the Submariner for the next guy who comes along.
IDGuy is correct about what to keep and what to move on.
The poor Steinhart OVM 1 must be feeling the pressure. Make sure she goes to someone who needs a good watch but can't afford luxury prices please.
Ohhh. Would u do another collection review? I wanna submit mine
Perfect advice
Collection review, nice
Wear it and love it
Bravo!
Been in the nos trap once, never again.
I skip every nos, mint or whatever flawless watch comes my way with pleasure to someone else, to than prefer and enjoy my already used watches to wear them with no further headaches.
A good friend of mine at a reseller explained the same situation to me. They have an NOS flat four kermit Sub. He explained to me that it would be a bad idea to sell it to someone that would wear it. Its sad to know that watch will always be a safe queen.
@@IDKline my bad, I meant to say at a secondary dealer, not an AD.
The watch collection was listed and Tag Heuer came last. That made me giggle.
Many scary truths in the vid. To be content is a blessing. I am so glad that I am content with my small cheap collection. I like Rolex watches but not enough to drop thousands on one.
IDGUY, I love the fact that you explore not only design elements but emotional elements as well. As for the owner of the NOS Sub. While in concept I like IDGUY's simplify notion of paring down to 3 watches, why bother? Are you going to get rid of the Steinhart "beater" for no money? The Longines, which is your only white dial and multi-complication watch? The Blackbay 58, that has a completely different vibe than the Sub? Your only pilot watch? OK, maybe one of the chronographs? I would wear the Sub and enjoy the watch, put this behind you and don't feel guilty.
Now a question for IDGUY. You suggested a 9 watch collection guy to go down to 1. With your smaller collection, would you go down to one to simplify?
I just went through an exercise to map out a 6 watch collection to try and figure out which ones were really important for me. If I had to, I could very easily get to 3. But, in reality, I will probably end up with between 10 and 20 over the next 15 years. I had 7 motorcycles at my peak, I still have 4. I just pared down to 5 sets of skis by giving my son 4 pairs now that he is back close to the mountains. So 3 watches for me...... I doubt it.....LOL
I bought my submariner in 1976 when people thought a submariner was a crew member , I’ve dived with it and worn it ever since to this day, when I look at it I just think of all the adventures we have had together not that’s it’s worth a lot more than the £176 I paid for it new from Watches of Switzerland in Southport England, my advice to you is to wear it,you wouldn’t buy a Bentley and not drive it would you I drive mine.
@@IDKline well done.
Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. The NOS concept is one of speculation as where by, a jewellery store sets aside a discontinued item hoping to realize a profit based on its rarity and eventually selling it for more. In this case the vendor was successful. There’s no attachment to its functionality other than an exchange for profit in this situation. However I question the concept of collectable rareness. The fact it’s the last of the production line needs to tempered with the fact Rolex has also produced other discontinued watches that weren’t as mass produced as the Submariner. Look no further than the Sea Dweller 116600 or 16600 both similar divers watches with less units produced during there manufactured life run. Perhaps if it’s something unique driving the desire to own a NOS watch, a better purchase would of been something less commercialized and not as often seen. Reconsideration might swap out some of the less worn prices and focus on what is his object of affection. Either way regardless of any watches newness it’s ridiculous not to wear it, it defeats the purpose function.
way overpaid. that's dumb. plain & simple. worse not using the watch. poser. its not a patek dude, just use & enjoy the watch.
i can fully understand this guys dilema. i purchased a sub no date 114060 from an AD at retail price weeks before the new models were recently released. so basically i have a discontinued model that went up in value. i compromised and wear it, but sparingly.
A watch should not be viewed as an investment. It should be worn!
I paid around 2250€ back in 1997 for my 16610 at the Rolex AD and it’s still looking almost new and going strong. Best 2250€ I’ve ever spent...not because of the increase in value in today’s market but because I’ve worn it and enjoyed it for over 20 years and still enjoy it as much as I did on day 1.
Jesus
I can understand someone, who bought the Speedy Snoopy II at retail, is hesitating to wear a watch that now costs 35000€ on pre-own market, but 8->12k€ this is not a big deal.
just wear it ffs
GREAT advice, man. You literally could have been sitting in a psychologist’s office delivering that advice with him across from you on the couch.
I got my personal holy grail (5513) in 2000 for about $1500. They have now skyrocketed in price. Along the way I picked up a 1655; unique but I never really dug it like the 5513. It’s more of an investment now. I would consider trading it for the right piece....I’ve always wanted a 1016 and a 1675 but those are just silly money now. Should have picked them up 20 years ago. Bottom line is if they never happen I’m happy with what I have!
I want a Daytona. But to surmise, when you REALLY think about it, an "investment" that has only doubled over 18 years is fair appreciation. I would have bought a "wearable" one (Sub that is) in his case. Box and Papers, sure, but good/great condition for sure.
Yes, keep the Explorer, the Explorer II, the Speedmaster and the Submariner in the collection (Black only collection?). And enjoy.
Congratulations on obtaining a beautiful and iconic time piece. Wear it in good health. Thank you, next.
Just enjoy what you like, and seeing this video, maybe I'm fortunate as I have never liked Rolex (even as good as they are)
To be honest you are not losing much value if you wear it, granted you will keep the box and papers safe.
Its not similar to a NOS patek Nautilus dilemma. Rolex NOS is readilly available if you have the money, Patek is not.
Don't let the watch bully you, wear the damn thing.
The problem with paying 10000 pounds/dollars/euros whatever is not my issue, it is that I can get my lightly used Tudor BB, and the Breitling B1, and the IWC Mark XVIII and have airfare to Europe leftover, and not feel worried at all about wearing them.
Keep the Explorer 36mm, & the Explorer II. Sell the Speedy Reduced, and sell the rest. Then get yourself a Speedmaster Pro. You will have a solid 3 piece collection. 4 would be a perfect foundation collection if you get a Speedy. All you would need to a full form follows function foundation collection if you get a good dress watch. You have your outdoors watch Explorer 36. You have a GMT Explorer II. You have your grail and diver Submariner. If you get a Speedy, you’ll get a chrono. All iconic watches all can be your everyday watches. With the money you get with selling the rest. You can very easily get a Speedy new on EBay or Jomashop. The 5th watch could be anything dressy. My recommendation..., Rolex Date Just Fluted bezel Jubilee bracelet. JLC Reverso/Perpetual calendar/moonphase master control. Patek Calatrava. A Lange 1851/1851 Up Down. Cartier Tank Louis Cartier. Rolex Day Date. A perfect 5 piece collection.
As Tyler Durden famously remarked, ‘the things you own end up owning you.’ I want a submariner, but I have a stunning Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean that is visually more beautiful and mechanically superior. Once you realize items are fleeting, you can enjoy life.
I purchased my grail watch back in 2010 right before I got married. To make a long story short I’ve worn the watch traveling all over the world with my wife. Now every time I look at it I think of all the adventures I went on so use your watch with pride and create memories with it. I could of purchased a Rolex back then but there are too many fakes out there and the people I know generally wearing them don’t have a clue about watches in general. It’s just the name and prestige of owning one which attracts them. Just my two cents
I can understand his dilemma. The watch is tinged with regret. If he had just bitten the bullet earlier or waited longer to save for what he wanted, he could have bought the same watch ages ago and worn it all this time. His indecision comes from the resentment of having to pay more just to experience what might have been back then.
The problem with someone who doesn't have expensive watches and finally gets it ends up only wearing it a few times a year to special events. If you can't wear it everyday SELL IT and buy or use the watch you can because the true identity is what you wear everyday.
“The Owner Cannot Wear His Submariner” - Looking at this person’s collection, he has plenty of watches to keep himself going without cracking open the Sub.
I would say, Take your time before you make any decisions to get wear it or get rid of it. It will happen eventually.
You say that the Explorer didn’t do it for you, yet it is still in the collection. Why hasn’t that gone, do you wear it much?
There are some nice pieces there and maybe the Sub will just take its time to blend in. Maybe some pieces will make way for something else?
A great little feature that you shared here IDGuy. Viewers email stories make for interesting videos. ✊
Let me preface it by saying that I'm a watch lover myself and I try to be conscientious in my comment here. But standing back I do realize that the root of all this internal conflict is the fact that he was never able to and is still not able to justify the cost of a Rolex Subby, new, old, NOS, AD or not. I saw his comment that he started wearing the subby now. But I'm not sure if that's an indication of resolution. Not trying to sound philosophical but a man always has two voices: one is the logical and another is emotional. The kicker is that either one can be playing the saint or devil's advocate at one minute and be switching the role the next. If you get what I'm saying here, great. If not, happy hunting regardless. When all is said and done, if it makes you feel better, nothing in life is really ultimately meaningful or purposeful. We are all driven by forces without our control. There's really no point making sense out of this, but I know you can't really help it. This is the conundrum we all face when we are trying to justify something we are attracted to but find no good reason for it.
A minute into it, I had two words. Wear it. I think Hans Wildorf would approve.
Nothing wrong with Rolex as for me I prefer Seiko and 🕉 Omega

Tough choice. It should have been easy to wear it like a thousand dollar piece.
His real mistake was buying all those stop gap watches instead of saving for the Sub, and now over thinking the whole process. Put the watch on or sell it just don't sit in the middle of your self doubt and stew.

The endless debate about the lugs on the first gen ceramic Submariner. Mainly from disgruntled old Sub owners who weren’t happy about their model being old. Now they’ve shaved the lugs a tiny bit but made the bulky clasp housing the glide lock even bulkier. What the Sub has lost off its shoulders has been added to its ankles. It’s all just gibberish to me. Buy what you like and ignore the forums, the nay sayers will always find something to moan about. No watch is perfect. There’s always the counter argument. Buy the watch your heart really desires. Don’t faff about buying derivatives they’ll never satisfy in the long run. And don’t over think. Just strap on your watch and enjoy while the honeymoon lasts.
