  • A Discussion around the Design Evolution of the Omega Seamaster 300m and the modern development of the line. This video investigates the leaked 2021 Seamaster by looking back at the history of the CK2913 and how the modern iterations aim to pay tribute to those past references. The question is whether the new model looks too old-fashioned. Does the line deserve an overhaul to make it even more competitive amongst its contemporaries?

    Another video Gem my friend. I find that your rendering for a new Seamaster 300 would take Omega to the next level. You should request to join their design studio. Now, if Omega might take the 300 back to a 39 or 40mm case size, that would be worth waiting for. As always thanks for all the hard work you execute to enlighten us.🔥

    • @ID-Guy

      My pleasure as always Reed and thank you for your thoughts on it. I also get this feeling that a fresh, modern look would have people in the watch community going nuts for it (maybe that's just a guess though) - and if Omega were to reach out with an opportunity, I'd be humbled. The downside to working in a studio is that you idea may never see the light of day (purely because of heavies and seniors having their say) So there's pros and cons of working solo ;) Also agree on the sizing. The 39mm size with 49mm lugs could fit so many wrists, not just the lean guys and gals out there. Thank you as always!

  • @stueyx
    @stueyx 3 роки тому +8

    I would go for yours, patina should be earned! White was the original intention, white should be what is designed now. It also fits in better with the Moonwatch black and white contrast. I'm assuming the ones from 60 plus years ago have also patinated, but they don't include that with the modern iterations.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  3 роки тому +2

      Patina should be earned! Love that. With the vintage reissues, I'm okay with it, but these newer models doubling down on it makes them look very peculiar in some circumstances. I hope you're well and keeping busy, Stu! Great seeing you in the comments, brother

    • @anthonysmith2982
      @anthonysmith2982 3 роки тому +1

      That's a great comment Stu and one that is very difficult to disagree with.
      I love 'earned' patina. That's almost always the very thing that draws me to certain vintage tool watch models - the manner in which they Patina. An N.O.S Tudor Snowflake NM would be a dream, but it's not as visually appealing as a well worn piece, at least to me.
      However, with todays tech., super-luminova won't patina, at least not in the time or manner that we appreciate as patina today.
      And that's something that I think is a shame.
      I bought a Certina DS PH200M - with Hesalite and aluminium, so in 25 - 30yrs I'll definitely have a watch that's earned its own patina - but I am disappointed that the lume (most likely) won't have started to turn the same hue as a watch from 1990-ish has today.
      I think that's why I don't mind a bit of faux lume, particularly (but not soley) on a 'stop-gap' watch, my Steinhart 1655 Explorer II 'copy' for example...
      I'll upgrade it to a 'keeper' one day soon (ish), so I'm happy to enjoy the artificially aged lume on my copy of the watch I ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ want... for a few years anyway.
      To return to my opening sentence; It's very hard to disagree with you and the next 'keeper' I buy will be earning it's patina for sure.
      Yet, I definitely have room for both in my watchbox. And not only on 'stop-gap' pieces. The '57 Seamaster 300 re-issue is in my future - with its mix of white arabics & super-luminova 'old radium' indicies. It'll still earn its own patina over time too. 😊
      Cheers Stu. Thanks for the thought provoking comment mate.
      TL/DR- Stu's right, but faux lume can still be a good thing.

    • @dstfno
      @dstfno 3 роки тому +1

      Lume in the 50ies was never stark white and modern lume will never get patina. It's a logical choice to use colored lume for watches that are vintage inspired.

    You've hit the nail on the head with your version. Its time for the faux patina trend to end, especially at Omega. Its time to move forward with more modern design elements. Imagine if designers of the original Seamasters were looking back to the 20's and 30's for design inspiration...

  • @christianhudson9623
    @christianhudson9623 3 роки тому

    First, great production values. Thank you for the time spent on the rendering. I think you successfully made your argument. One thing to add is that the Seamasters from the 90's (while dated with the more bloated hour indices) show how avoiding the faux patina stands the test of time (pun intended). Mine even has a splash of red on the seconds hand, which shows just how well your red "Seamaster" works on the black and white dial. I'm taken by your rendering which is slim and restrained in the indices compared to my 2264.50. The rendering is a winner.

    Interesting parallels between your thinking and sentiments in regard to these kid and style of watches and mine. I am also a keen fan of an industrial design and watches are one of my fav domain, apart from coffee machines, hi-fi design and Vespa scooters.
    My watch journey started a long time ago and I owned and sold many a Seiko, Citizen, Omega etc in the past. These days my focus is a little more refined, I also own the Omega CK2913 1957 Seamaster 300 and Seiko 62MAS re-issue but mine is SLA017 in 40mm size due to better fot to my wrist size and I find it (this could stir some thoughts from others :-)) better balanced on the dial/hands/bezel side of execution, my SJE093 (now sold) while truer to size of its OG, always felt a little 'squeezed' and pinched towards the centre of the hand stack. But that's me :) And this (dial size) is something I really like on the Omega's SM300 1957 and now on the 2021 Heritage version.
    Other watches you reviewed and commented on evoke almost the exact thoughts and sentiments I also have towards them, and it appears we both like the same/similar watch models. Stay well and keep posting!

    Another fascinating and well narrated commentary. This wasn’t a model that I was attracted to until I listened to you. I’ve a Speedmaster 50th anniversary and love both it’s design and heritage. I tried on a Spectre/James Bond model in the AD inc a NATO strap and it looked underwhelming. As my watch collection has grown and my thoughts have widened I can see the attractiveness of the elegance of the simplicity of this model range. It’s cleaner than the Speedie and the Diver 300 which I also like (and bought the new 2020 Seiko King Samurai instead as it was much cheaper but similar). I shall have to take another look at the AD. And your suggestions for improving are vg. I would have to reflect more to consider if I like your modern white baton and numerals approach more than the vintage patina style. Part of the charm is the vintage look which the radium patina gives.

    Great details regarding the history of this watch! I think I am going to love the newest 2021 the best! I am really on the fence about the faux patina, one reason I sold my Trilogy model. However, I think with this 2021 model, I will forgive the faux patina and simply concentrate one the positive elements. I have OCD about the word "Automatic" and, as you say, an essay about the other aspects of the movement. The simplicity of the text on this new model is absolutely spot on IMO. I have always loved the lollipop seconds hand as well. I can take or leave the new crown, but as long as it is easy to grip I'm OK with it. And I really like that the bracelet is going to be tapered! IDGUY, your Seamaster 300 1957 is the perfect watch for you. And this video reflects that bias. Except in this case bias is too strong a word. Maybe affinity is a better word. I appreciate the details you share. I would not have noticed them all. One the one hand, I like that Omega, like Rolex, is keeping extremely strong theme elements in these watches. On the other hand, maybe they might be better off picking a design and sticking with it. Maybe offer different sizes. Any way, as always love your videos. Nice video on one of my favorite under-the-radar pieces. Enjoyed the mock-up at the end too, and it works with the faux patina or in white - the red pops. Eliminating the “12” is so elemental and has suck a high reward. Would be ideal if Omega offered this in either a dive bezel or a 2nd time zone.

    A great video IDGuy, some very interesting thoughts. I really like all the different versions of this watch but somehow the one that currently picks at my want list is the current 233.30.41.21.01.001 version with the sandwich markers. Having the Arabic numerals done the same way would be even better, loosing the 12 to a larger applied Omega (or sandwich maybe?) symbol could work as well. The lollipop second hand looks a tad too Mondaine cast off for me, a small arrow works better in sympathy with the triangular hour markers. Minimal text on the dial is so much better than having an Oscar winners speech plastered on it that as you mention and many other manufacturers could take note of this, less is sometimes more. Your renders are interesting, moving to white markers and numerals works, but I would once again consider loosing the 12 in favour of a larger triangular hour marker or triangular shaped beavers teeth. Having a 12 numeral above the Omega symbol and watch family name is just a tad busy. Just my thoughts anyway.

      @ID-Guy  3 роки тому +1

      "Oscar winners speech" Y'know, guess what next week's video is all about? ;) Excellent comments on the design Anthony, and thank you! My main aim with this "modernised" looking 300 was to basically use bits and pieces from Omega's catalogue while adding a few character traits. Agree with you on removing the "12" and the lollipop (the arrowhead would work better if we're talking about the relationship between the batons etc) I just thought it looked so much more charismatic haha! The exercise was a lot of fun though. Currently working through my interpretation of the modern Explorer 2 which should be airing in two weeks. Ah, this hobby of ours...

    I love the Seamaster 300 Master coaxial. It is one of my favorite modern divers. For the new version I love what they are going to do with the bracelet. But that conical crown has something soft and peanutbutter cup-ish. Those Panerai sandwich dial style numerals add too much orange lume for my taste and you lose the contrast from the silver Arabic numerals. I find the 2015 version visually more appealing. The render would be a really great variant. But I have to say I love some warm color on the dial of a watch like this.

    Great discussion about this underrated watch. I think you're 're-imagining' is very good. Indeed, does anyone buy modern watches BECAUSE they have fauxtina? Some buy DESPITE, many AVOID! Unnecessarily divisive for a commercial product? I do think that the increased size of sandwich numerals (including '12') and the 'Seamaster 300' text on the original are better. Not sure I'd introduce red either. I'd tone down the triangular taper of the batons to something more subtle (Seiko often do a very subtle taper), I'd also ditch the hectic hour hand, 'lighten' the visual weight of the bezel (slope it? increase silver element, CP Trilogy/original?) and drop size to 40mm. But, this is going to be an exciting launch - there are many very nice things about this watch: quality, movement, bracelet, no date... 1/4 ARABICS!!! Like many watch makers, Omega seem determined perversely to avoid the glaring solution, resisting a bonafide home run classic at every opportunity!

    I still keeps good time and has probably never been serviced. Can parts even be found for this now ? The face is pretty worn and the glass is pretty scratched as dad was a diver. Really interesting assessment. I guess we have to wonder if they are content to let the 300 reign as vintage king vs the clear "modern" SMP? I think it would gain more adherents with the simple white accents; I like the stark contrasts in your render. One thing I would like to see are the lugs getting a bit of a downturn on them. As the model currently stands I simply cannot wear it as the lugs cantilever over my wrist. I realize this is not Omega's concern per se, but the truth is, if I could have worn a 300 I would have it over the 214270 I finally "settled" on. female endlinks would help though... Great episode. I have been looking forward to it since you announced it.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  3 роки тому

      I think that is exactly their approach, Michael. Keep the 300's in the background as the "Tribute" watches and the Pro's in the front as the working watch. Also know what you mean about the straight lugs. It looks like the newer 2021 model is going to be a lot more accommodating in this area (when looking at the side profile from the leaked images) But if given the chance, bringing the size back down to 39mm and a lug length of 49mm's (female endlinks) would fit so many wrists. Lugs really do make or break the presence of the watch on wrist. Always quite a fascinating exercise ;) Thank you as always for the comment, sir! This was great fun to throw a few concepts together
