It took me over a year to get back into Sonic Mania. This level deflated my enthusiasm and now I am seeing you can beat it in less than 4 minutes. I hate myself right now… it took me almost 9 minutes to beat act 1.

I got something done to me here that I remember from Sonic 1 in Marble Zone 3 (and Lava Reef act 1 in Sonic and Knuckles), and that had not happened to me in a while (this also happened at Metallic Madness act 2 here, with the spiked platforms)-- when the platform pushed me up into the spikes, I not only lost my rings, but died at the same time. That said, when you're here, and you get to the point where the platform moves up and down amid the spikes on the ceiling, you need to make sure you have really good reaction time (unless you have a shield), because if you don't get out from under in time, it'll be quite a gruesome death (the Metallic Madness act 2 version of this is that if you don't get to the safe area in time [the shaded area] when the spiked platforms come down, they'll also pull a Marble Zone act 3 on you).

I play on the Switch and I can do it a little bit slower than you did. That said; I've not really used the Drop Dash. I need to learn that because it seems to save a few seconds. I also didn't know about that lightning shield which saves messing up some cycles. That said; there's a couple of things I do which seem a little better; if you angle the other way at ~56 seconds, you can launch yourself the other direction and save a couple of seconds and need to spindash there, and on the final ascent you can skip the moving double springs.

I never tried. Muscle memory from Sonic and Knucles. While the fire shield protected you from fire and lava, the magnet shield didn't block those lightning arcs in the Death Egg zone.
