Great videos and great info!!!! I freaked a 35 year motorcycle mechanic when i mentioned putting a chinese cdi box on my 1986 yamaha badger 80cc yfm. I purchased one for $6 and got it to go with it. The original was $150 used and $280 new so thanks for the info. He swore it was a coil but it was the cdi. Thanks.

So I changed the spark plug thinking I might get lucky. Fired up and ran great but I wasn't convinced so put old plug back in. Still ran great. I am now thinking that the prob may be in carb maybe something was holding the float so it would get enough gas to idle but nothing more. Drained the bowl, lots of junk came out will pull carb apart and clean, change filter hopefully will fix. I did do all the ignition and power stuff you had mentioned previously everything good. Thanks a lot for the advice

+Harvey Spooner rewired it last week..cleaned the carb and it started right up..she has arthritis and has trouble with her brake handle ..i had a 600 ninja chassis with a good pedal and cylinder...i used bed frame and an alternator bracket to weld in a mount for the pedal ..its cold but she smiles big ...i think she froze her teeth lol cause she can't stop smiling when she's on it ...thanks allot ..god bless ya

I'm attempting to turn a cm200t into a pit bike. I'm totally at a loss. I have eight wires coming out of the engine. I have a couple scrap wiring harnesses laying around. As I have no formal experience, I am at a great disposition in wiring this thing. All help is appreciated, thank you.
I wish I would have known about this idea when I had my Polaris Explorer, it has a pretty bad ignition problem, it had been previously stolen and the wiring was all chopped up.

I have a bashan it fucked up one day out died then tryed to start it up again but did not work it kept trying to start its self could not stop it burn out my starter motor and burn my wires but I got all new parts and she’s trying to start but nothing but Yes your videos help me so much man. if my cdi box was bad would she still try to start or would I get nothing from her

Hi Harvey , I like your tutorials and the backyard. Big fan.I am working on Yamaha Moto 4 350 1987 . Bad clutch. I found the engine all completed from big bear 350 1990. I swapped the engine , but have a problem- no spark. Do you think I have to change the CDI box from big bear ? I left original CDI from Moto 4 350 engine. The Moto 4 engine ran . After swapping the engine with big bear, I lost the spark. Are the CDI boxes that much different , even both engines are 350 and only 3-4 years apart in production? Thank you for your help

Harvey I have a 1987 trx250x which is running but I am curious that my cdi wiring has the 2 small plug wires reversed. The upper wire color is black/red. The lower is black/white. Different from all diagrams.
Hey I have a Honda 400cc side ways engine the cdi doesn't have 2 Earth's only one the other wire goes to one of the yellow wires in Rectifier Regulator any idea how to rewire that if I wire it with a cdi like you do it runs like crap any help.

Hey Doug, I should have a video up on the next few days on a high performance Casoli CDI box, it has a much hotter spark and I think it can be used to jump start a Frankenstein Monster if no lightening is not available... Good Luck with the Timberwolf, I used my CDI box on a Yamaha golf cart engine and it fired up, so, it should work on Ur Yamaha.... I believe it's an 85 i bought a lifted golf with with the 250es motor and rear end in it. it looks like they rigged up there own wiring so I yanked it all out hoping to connect the universal cdi you made but with no luck because I only see three yellow wires one green wire and one blue/yellow striped wire coming out of the engine. thanks for replying!

Harvey I have been watching all your videos trying to solve my atc problem. I have learned alot already thanks for that! my issue is with a 1985 ATC 250es big red. It has intermittent spark... Sparks when it wants to but not all the time and thats testing the spark plug by grounding it out. Honda dealership wants 75$ for a ignition coil so I didn't even ask about a cdi. I am trying to find a cheap CDI for my bike appaently it needs advance in it. any help would be appreciated ! Keep up the good work
Hey Brody, I would use a DC powered GY6 CDI and spark coil triggered thru the 250ES pulse generator... I have a 1986 Honda ATC250r and according to many the aftermarket CDI's are junk causing kick backs etc. or don't even work. Why is it so tough to find a decent aftermarket CDI do you think and can the stock one be rebuilt you think? Thanks

Ok Harvey so mine is a DC I've bought ten of the ebay cdi's and I'm way over what I could've just bought the oem Honda version but I'm not giving up I'm going to assume that if it's a DC cdi I've gotta make the same universal jump pack but with a DC pak right ?because everytime I put it in reverse it does.or go to rev it cuts out or dies backfires .carb is new valves are good it's in my knock off cdi where the problem lies.any help would be greatly appreciated.
can there be something made for the newer bikes, I have a 96 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500, and can't get it to spark, I replaced everything that is electrical and still no luck, seeing that I have 2 coils and 2 pickup coils and the ICU box seems complicated, your boxes your making are for quads where there is no turning signals and all the other jazz that comes from a street bike, btw, my bike is carbureted.
Yes. This looks like it may be my savior. I have an 87 Honda cr250r dirt bike. Seems impossible to find a cdi unit for it. Will this work for any size motor? Such as my 250?

Hey buddy, My old points system for the FL 250 is so in and out. The points are worn out and I'm having trouble finding new ones besides the point plate is sloppy af. If I am understanding you correctly, I can just bypass all that with the system you described. Will I need to do anything inside the stater like remove the old points or reroute any wiring inside the stater? I have a black wire and a yellow, that's it.
Hey Harvey, been watchin your videos and they've been a big help, Got a couple questions. I just got a 300cc china quad and the wiring harness is fried so i wanna simplify to see if she runs. Anyway i only have 3 yellows, a blue/white(trigger) and a green/white(gnd) coming from the stator. The green/w and blue/w have their own plug and go to the CDI, the 3 yellow go to the R/R and then the R/R has a red and a green coming out going to the harness. Now i can only assume i have a DC CDI as i dont have a red/black wire coming from the stator to the CDI, is this correct? Its a 6 pin CDI and i have identified the pins and the power input was a black wire coming from a splice that went to some other box in the harness and a couple plugs. Secondly i just want to get another cheap DC CDI to get this thing running and im wondering if i have to buy a CDI that is meant for a 300 or will one for a smaller engine do? thanks for the help

I have a honda recon that will start right up and idle no problem as soon as i give it gas it dies right out no spit or spudder nothing, acts as if i hit the kill switch and not the throttle. You seem to know your stuff, any ideas.
Hey Waylon!!! Assuming that Ur carb is good, sounds like Ur idle circuit is good, the run and enrich carb circuit are clogged, I also see this if there is water in the fuel and some in the carb bowl.... From an ignition point of view, this can happen if the DC side of Ur CDI unit is getting marginal power or Voltage such that it can come up with enough power to spark at low RPM but, not at higher RPM, so, check to make sure that the wiring and voltage to Ur CDI unit are solid, (make sure Ur battery is at 13+volts when the ATV is running), I would check the battery voltage first and then check the carb.... I have a 1987 trx125 and a bad cdi. I bought a cdi off ebay but it doesn't work. They said the 1987 is unique in the wiring and they were sorry that it wouldn't work. They told me the following: "Switch the wires on the two plug and do not connect the green wires on the four plug, this trick works on most of the hondas." Before I start pulling out wires or cutting, will doing what they said work?
Hey Ed, I would try what they recommend, but, I would do it in a way that I could reverse it should the swap not work, if it doesn't work, I would send the CDI back for a refund... Then I would use the 12VDC CDI hack.... 2X BTW, 1st - I am not thrilled about running a CDI without the green/ground wire connected, it is like flying a plane in the dark without an altimeter, one has no reverse to "0", or literal ground, it may work like that, but, as I said, I don't like it.... 2nd - I'm not convinced that Ur oem CDI is dead, for the 100s of Honda CDIs I've handled and seen mishandled, I have only seen one bad one... If U wish, I can check my hoard of TRX125s for a 1987, I think I have a few in the hoard, there is probably an easy hack to get around Ur CDI issue... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting
@@HarveySpooner it will work but I just used one off my old xr 200 . Would you happen to have a set of plastics to sell or trade for some atv stuff. Oh and when u use xr 200 cdi there is no rev limiter and haven't had problem with timing curve it runs great and don't get hot. But it will rev to the moon if you wanted it to other than that runs great.

I've been sorting through a horribly rigged harness on a 1989ish Kawasaki bayuo 300, your universal harness should (generally speaking) work on that bike, correct? if so, i noticed during my sorting that this atv has a 3phase stator, i see were the pulsar wire would go but were would the "stator' wire go? there is one connector with 2 wires and another with 3. ps: my keybord is taking a crap sorry for bad gramar

Hey Jimmy, I used it on a Yamaha G5 golf cart and got it to fire on starting fluid.... Need to smash a fresh carb on it and try to get it running right.... Good luck, the GY6 / 4 cycle CDI has an advance built in, probably not as much as the 2 cycle, but, it should fire up and run up to 6000rpm with no problem.... Hey tyler, I would check the ohm readings between the 4 yellow wires and ground, one wire should look different then the other 3, that is the wire for the CDI stator, I would expect its resistance to be higher and the resistance of the other 3 should be lower.... I have a serious problem. my boyfriend is destructive. he has gone through 4 honda quads in less than a year. worst of all they belong to my mom.starting with a 84 fourtx 250 (700)then 2005 300ex(paid near 2500), 2015 250trx(paid around 1600), rancher 420 (paid 1000). now we recently picked up 2 parts quads. I am pretty good when it comes to working on them and I am stumped. his brother tore them to pieces and my mom has no idea. she will never forgive me for letting this happen. can you tell me things to check first the engines are fine. none are froze up or blown. I just want to get them fixed and before she finds them.
Hey Shani, I'm not sure on how to answer this question.... U maybe better off filling Ur life with folks who do not wreck things and cause U issues to clean up.... U have 2 problems with these quads, first, they R broken, and second, they R in pieces.... If U have any hopes of them running again, I would start by getting the parts sorted and put back on the quads..... Then go quad by quad, determine what is wrong with it, with as many quads at U have, including the part ones, I would make a list and write what is wrong with them.... Some may just need new gas and a carb clean, some may have lost keys, and it maybe a matter of bypassing the ignition.... For the ones with blown transmissions, cracked frames or other big problems, I would start with them last and probably would use them for parts.... When U get U list put together, send me a copy, I maybe able to put together videos for U on each one.... Good luck there, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

Arkansas and it was running great but I like my brother use it fir a year then it got put up for 3 when I wheb to get it the cooling unit was shoot I ng water dont 8n tha oil and gas some how when you hit the gas water shoot out into the car... idk what he did to it it nlnot getting not spark I checked over the wires and most of 2 of then not plug up to nothing at all... I replay the coil and dci but still nothing... there other boxes on it that might b out pike speed limiter and electric enighter but I see you video bout that bypass and I was going to see if that workd but idk what itll to water cooling systems and how itll work on a automatic atv
The linhai aint a simple atv to day I rebuilt the motor and there was like 2in of muck in the bottom of thr oil.... I just wanna get this thing raceing again and tearing up some mud
my redcat 90cc only has 4 wires off the stator, im assuming the white , yellow are for the regulator. that leaves me with a green wire and a blue with white stripe..and no spark.the cdi is 4 pin ....im stuck

Ive had the engine on a stand up scooter I build and it worked fine for the last couple of years, not sure how switching frames would make a difference unless something burned out when I started it last weekend...really dig your videos
Hey Brandon, I think the 1994 xrt300 is like the foreman 300 here in the USA... So many places to start.... I always start with a new spark plug, then, make sure the handle bar and key switches are working properly, make sure that Ur larger CDI is getting 12Volts, makes sure all the wires are plugged in.... After that, one had to get into the dark and dirty of the CDI plug with a digital volt meter.... I hope this helps... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

I'm attempting to turn a cm200t into a pit bike. I'm totally at a loss. I have eight wires coming out of the engine. I have a couple scrap wiring harnesses laying around. As I have no formal experience, I am at a great disposition in wiring this thing. All help is appreciated, thank you.

I wish I would have known about this idea when I had my Polaris Explorer, it has a pretty bad ignition problem, it had been previously stolen and the wiring was all chopped up.

I have a bashan it fucked up one day out died then tryed to start it up again but did not work it kept trying to start its self could not stop it burn out my starter motor and burn my wires but I got all new parts and she’s trying to start but nothing but Yes your videos help me so much man. if my cdi box was bad would she still try to start or would I get nothing from her

Hi Harvey , I like your tutorials and the backyard. Big fan.I am working on Yamaha Moto 4 350 1987 . Bad clutch. I found the engine all completed from big bear 350 1990. I swapped the engine , but have a problem- no spark. Do you think I have to change the CDI box from big bear ? I left original CDI from Moto 4 350 engine. The Moto 4 engine ran . After swapping the engine with big bear, I lost the spark. Are the CDI boxes that much different , even both engines are 350 and only 3-4 years apart in production? Thank you for your help

Harvey I have a 1987 trx250x which is running but I am curious that my cdi wiring has the 2 small plug wires reversed. The upper wire color is black/red. The lower is black/white. Different from all diagrams.
Hey I have a Honda 400cc side ways engine the cdi doesn't have 2 Earth's only one the other wire goes to one of the yellow wires in Rectifier Regulator any idea how to rewire that if I wire it with a cdi like you do it runs like crap any help.

Hey Doug, I should have a video up on the next few days on a high performance Casoli CDI box, it has a much hotter spark and I think it can be used to jump start a Frankenstein Monster if no lightening is not available... Good Luck with the Timberwolf, I used my CDI box on a Yamaha golf cart engine and it fired up, so, it should work on Ur Yamaha.... Harvey Spooner. Thanks Harvey. I ordered the dc cdi box, pig tail and coil. should arrive tomorrow. Hoping the 250cc will run good with the small cdi box. Once i get it going I will let you know. I do appreciate your advice and help.

I only had to replace the cdi with a dc cdi and bought the wiring harness for it. My pickup coil and ignition coil was working.
I believe it's an 85 i bought a lifted golf with with the 250es motor and rear end in it. it looks like they rigged up there own wiring so I yanked it all out hoping to connect the universal cdi you made but with no luck because I only see three yellow wires one green wire and one blue/yellow striped wire coming out of the engine. thanks for replying!

my issue is with a 1985 ATC 250es big red. It has intermittent spark... Sparks when it wants to but not all the time and thats testing the spark plug by grounding it out. Honda dealership wants 75$ for a ignition coil so I didn't even ask about a cdi.

Hey Brody, I would use a DC powered GY6 CDI and spark coil triggered thru the 250ES pulse generator... I have a 1986 Honda ATC250r and according to many the aftermarket CDI's are junk causing kick backs etc. or don't even work. Why is it so tough to find a decent aftermarket CDI do you think and can the stock one be rebuilt you think? Thanks
An 1984 200s has a round plug CDI doesn't it? So it's better to use a older 200s square cdi setup?

can there be something made for the newer bikes, I have a 96 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500, and can't get it to spark, I replaced everything that is electrical and still no luck, seeing that I have 2 coils and 2 pickup coils and the ICU box seems complicated, your boxes your making are for quads where there is no turning signals and all the other jazz that comes from a street bike, btw, my bike is carbureted.

Hey buddy, My old points system for the FL 250 is so in and out. The points are worn out and I'm having trouble finding new ones besides the point plate is sloppy af. If I am understanding you correctly, I can just bypass all that with the system you described. Will I need to do anything inside the stater like remove the old points or reroute any wiring inside the stater? I have a black wire and a yellow, that's it.

Hey Harvey, been watchin your videos and they've been a big help, Got a couple questions. I just got a 300cc china quad and the wiring harness is fried so i wanna simplify to see if she runs. Anyway i only have 3 yellows, a blue/white(trigger) and a green/white(gnd) coming from the stator. The green/w and blue/w have their own plug and go to the CDI, the 3 yellow go to the R/R and then the R/R has a red and a green coming out going to the harness. Now i can only assume i have a DC CDI as i dont have a red/black wire coming from the stator to the CDI, is this correct? Its a 6 pin CDI and i have identified the pins and the power input was a black wire coming from a splice that went to some other box in the harness and a couple plugs.
Secondly i just want to get another cheap DC CDI to get this thing running and im wondering if i have to buy a CDI that is meant for a 300 or will one for a smaller engine do?

I have a honda recon that will start right up and idle no problem as soon as i give it gas it dies right out no spit or spudder nothing, acts as if i hit the kill switch and not the throttle. You seem to know your stuff, any ideas.
Hey Waylon!!! Assuming that Ur carb is good, sounds like Ur idle circuit is good, the run and enrich carb circuit are clogged, I also see this if there is water in the fuel and some in the carb bowl.... From an ignition point of view, this can happen if the DC side of Ur CDI unit is getting marginal power or Voltage such that it can come up with enough power to spark at low RPM but, not at higher RPM, so, check to make sure that the wiring and voltage to Ur CDI unit are solid, (make sure Ur battery is at 13+volts when the ATV is running), I would check the battery voltage first and then check the carb.... I have a 1987 trx125 and a bad cdi. I bought a cdi off ebay but it doesn't work. They said the 1987 is unique in the wiring and they were sorry that it wouldn't work. They told me the following: "Switch the wires on the two plug and do not connect the green wires on the four plug, this trick works on most of the hondas." Before I start pulling out wires or cutting, will doing what they said work?
Hey Ed, I would try what they recommend, but, I would do it in a way that I could reverse it should the swap not work, if it doesn't work, I would send the CDI back for a refund... Then I would use the 12VDC CDI hack.... 2X BTW, 1st - I am not thrilled about running a CDI without the green/ground wire connected, it is like flying a plane in the dark without an altimeter, one has no reverse to "0", or literal ground, it may work like that, but, as I said, I don't like it.... 2nd - I'm not convinced that Ur oem CDI is dead, for the 100s of Honda CDIs I've handled and seen mishandled, I have only seen one bad one... If U wish, I can check my hoard of TRX125s for a 1987, I think I have a few in the hoard, there is probably an easy hack to get around Ur CDI issue... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting
@@HarveySpooner it will work but I just used one off my old xr 200 . Would you happen to have a set of plastics to sell or trade for some atv stuff. Oh and when u use xr 200 cdi there is no rev limiter and haven't had problem with timing curve it runs great and don't get hot. But it will rev to the moon if you wanted it to other than that runs great.

I've been sorting through a horribly rigged harness on a 1989ish Kawasaki bayuo 300, your universal harness should (generally speaking) work on that bike, correct? if so, i noticed during my sorting that this atv has a 3phase stator, i see were the pulsar wire would go but were would the "stator' wire go? there is one connector with 2 wires and another with 3.

@rodrigoruas4196 those have 2 cdi boxes and you can swap them and see if spark moves to other cylinder or not and troubleshoot from there.

The last part U have to change is the spark coil, before we begin this discussion, how many CDIs do U have, a lot of the Honda quads have 2, one is DC and it is used for going forward, the other one is rev limited, ac powered, and it is used for reverse.... Hey Jimmy, I used it on a Yamaha G5 golf cart and got it to fire on starting fluid.... Need to smash a fresh carb on it and try to get it running right.... Good luck, the GY6 / 4 cycle CDI has an advance built in, probably not as much as the 2 cycle, but, it should fire up and run up to 6000rpm with no problem.... Hey tyler, I would check the ohm readings between the 4 yellow wires and ground, one wire should look different then the other 3, that is the wire for the CDI stator, I would expect its resistance to be higher and the resistance of the other 3 should be lower.... I have a serious problem. my boyfriend is destructive. he has gone through 4 honda quads in less than a year. worst of all they belong to my mom.starting with a 84 fourtx 250 (700)then 2005 300ex(paid near 2500), 2015 250trx(paid around 1600), rancher 420 (paid 1000). now we recently picked up 2 parts quads. I am pretty good when it comes to working on them and I am stumped. his brother tore them to pieces and my mom has no idea. she will never forgive me for letting this happen. can you tell me things to check first the engines are fine. none are froze up or blown. I just want to get them fixed and before she finds them.
Hey Shani, I'm not sure on how to answer this question.... U maybe better off filling Ur life with folks who do not wreck things and cause U issues to clean up.... U have 2 problems with these quads, first, they R broken, and second, they R in pieces.... If U have any hopes of them running again, I would start by getting the parts sorted and put back on the quads..... Then go quad by quad, determine what is wrong with it, with as many quads at U have, including the part ones, I would make a list and write what is wrong with them.... Some may just need new gas and a carb clean, some may have lost keys, and it maybe a matter of bypassing the ignition.... For the ones with blown transmissions, cracked frames or other big problems, I would start with them last and probably would use them for parts.... When U get U list put together, send me a copy, I maybe able to put together videos for U on each one.... Good luck there, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

Arkansas and it was running great but I like my brother use it fir a year then it got put up for 3 when I wheb to get it the cooling unit was shoot I ng water dont 8n tha oil and gas some how when you hit the gas water shoot out into the car... idk what he did to it it nlnot getting not spark I checked over the wires and most of 2 of then not plug up to nothing at all... The linhai aint a simple atv to day I rebuilt the motor and there was like 2in of muck in the bottom of thr oil.... I just wanna get this thing raceing again and tearing up some mud
my redcat 90cc only has 4 wires off the stator, im assuming the white , yellow are for the regulator. that leaves me with a green wire and a blue with white stripe..and no spark.the cdi is 4 pin ....im stuck

Ive had the engine on a stand up scooter I build and it worked fine for the last couple of years, not sure how switching frames would make a difference unless something burned out when I started it last weekend...really dig your videos

Hey Brandon, I think the 1994 xrt300 is like the foreman 300 here in the USA... So many places to start.... I always start with a new spark plug, then, make sure the handle bar and key switches are working properly, make sure that Ur larger CDI is getting 12Volts, makes sure all the wires are plugged in.... After that, one had to get into the dark and dirty of the CDI plug with a digital volt meter.... I hope this helps... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!
