  • Day 5 of the West Highland Way- Inveroran to Kinlochleven. 18.4 miles. Went over the Devil's Staircase in the blazing afternoon sun. Killer climb. Sunburnt to shit. Had a terrible but very funny dinner with two girls I met... I do not recommend the Macdonald restaurant 😂. The burger was like a charred placemat. But the view of the sunset from the place is lovely.

Stunning scenery ❤️ not sure I could handle those midges though. So hope I find a solution to the little buggers, and bigger bugs too... btw, it’s good to hear about all the details of your shoes etc... it’s the kinds of infos we all need for these kinds of journeys. I’d definitely have to take these long journeys slower than you. Probably stop and camp every 6 miles or so (in reality, every 3 😂🤣). Your fitness levels are probably better than you realise. I’m nearly 60 and my fitness levels have truly plummeted. I so need to get out and walk more 🙃

did my first solo backpacking hike along the WHW this year having just turned 47. Great experience and highly recommend it. As with anything though keep safe and have your phone charged for emergencies. Was a stretch after leaving Inversnaid that was poorly sign posted. Thought I had gone the wrong way somehow as looked like I was looping back around the loch. Phoned daughter to get her advice and then stopped a couple guys who assured me I was going the right way but agreed it was poorly sign posted along that particular stretch. So yeah, there are solo female hikers along the way but it is a fairly busy trail so never really alone. My favourite stretch was the Devils Staircase but that climb down into Kinlochleven along the loose stone road is a bit of a nightmare. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a trail that is worth redoing several times. Always a different experience each time doing it. Next year doing it again but with daughter and the dog.

Love the building! We have many like those here in Richmond, VA, that have been converted to loft apartments (flats). With the trucks, it’s the little things. What a fun hike! Happy hiking!!

I loved your observations on life. As an old geezer(68), getting out on trail is a dream(and memories) but, the body is not enthusiastic. A lot of us grown up kids still get the truckers to honk. Never lose your inner child. Good Luck, Rick

Hi Rick, like you I’m one of the old geezers with memories of long distance uk walks. However, during lockdown walking has been one of the few things I’ve been willing and able to do.
After very gently building up to 5 miles I dragged my boots out, still in beautiful condition, and started longer walks. Now up to 11 miles and started wild camping in warmer months and in spring I’m off on the Dales way as a precursor to the West Highland and Great Glen way later in the year backpacking. I’m 70 and my wife, who is using B&Bs is joining me for much of it, is 62.
Don’t let age get in the way. It’s amazing what even an old codger can do if you put your mind to it. After all, during these restrictions what else is there to do.
      Good luck.
      Phil

Heyyy, thank you! Yes, if I remember rightly, there is a small patch of woodland near to the Mcdonald hotel/restaurant that i saw a couple of tents pitched up on. Also you go straight into a staggered climb to get out of Kinlochleven and there are a few tent-worthy spots on the way up.

I know, it's all a bit all over the place isn't it. To be honest, on a trail you'll be in the best place as you're pretty isolated. You will just have to be prepared to wild camp the entire way, in the case of hostels being booked up or closed! X

That would be awesome! I want to do the PCT first, and hopefully complete it, so then I'm set to come back to the AT with renewed vigor and a completion under my belt. How that plan will go, who knows! I've learnt that intentions aren't worth that much in the wild 😂🤞🏼

Appalachian Girl UK I know how you feel about trying to plan grand adventures, things always get in the way. I have a cabin on Tray mountain about 300 meters off the AT and some days I just want to set off and go

A house near me , when I was a child had lots of gnomes in the front garden, one new years some drunks from the local pub lined them all up at the bus stop. Funnier to see than to read lol.
