  • Ashley Graham sits down with the prolific Elaine Welteroth! Elaine is an accomplished magazine editor, television personality, and best-selling author. She was the youngest Editor-in-Chief at Teen Vogue and only the second black woman to hold that title in Conde Nast’s 107-year history. Never forget Elaine Welteroth revived Vogue Teens out of fashion death and made it relevant to young Gen Z, love her trailblazing a$$ in the fashion/editorial world. Just watch her interview here, literally creating a title for herself as an intern and negotiating a salary on her own - talk about manifesting exactly what you want out of life.

This was such an amazing interview. I am as white as white can be and I've almost never thought of the struggles that mixed races have to go through. I'm also glad we have women stepping forward and being so honest about their experiences and struggles, whether it be about race, gender, or sexual preference. It makes me happy to be a part of this generation. We have a long way to go, but I think we're going in the right direction. You're amazing, ladies!!!

Totally agree! When I started dating my fiancee 5 years ago (he is Mexican American, I am white as snow), it was such a culture shock. But I totally identified with Ashley when she said we need to ask the questions..bc I still do! This was such a refreshing and amazing episode. As we start to have children, it's so weird that I never thought of them being biracial but they will be! I'm so excited to learn more and be an activist for our community.

Im 20 and white and have felt incredibly inspired by Elaine since I was in 7th grade.
I sort of "grew up" watching her and Phillip Picardi represent their cultures and themselves while uploading videos on the TeenVogue UA-cam Channel and I remember feeling like even though I could quite yet understand their position; I would love to keep learning about their stories and backgrounds near and dear to me.
And to this day, Elaine has shaped so much of my aspirations on work and much more.

I'm casually friends with two people who grew up with Elaine in their hometown (neighboring city of my hometown) and I don't doubt at all that she is the type of person she presents herself to be. Because the two friends I know are similar types of people in terms of their perspective about life. Good people surround themselves with other good people. I wish I knew her personally but I'm still so proud of what she's accomplished and the positive and forward thinking messages she's presenting. She may not be from my hometown but dangit, can I claim her as my hometown hero anyway? ;) Great interview Ashley!

What a twist, you can practically see her light up, when she realizes what's going on.

Wao that biracial / black thing is really interesting. it's the first time is see someone from the States talking about that. As a French person, I identify myself as mixed (even though it's a bit more complicated than that). Saying that I'm black or white would put one of my sides aside. But I understand that most people in the US feels black. Let's not forget the notion of being black or white is a social construction.

I’m mixed race. And raised as such. Loving both sides.. Ashley you raise your son as mixed race. You raise your son how YOU see him not how the WORLD see’s him. (Which just means what white people see when they look at your son) If your husband wanted a black son he should have married a black woman, but he didn’t he married you. Let me tell you, your son is mixed. Your husband may raise your son as a black man. But the black community will never, ever except him as black. You and your husband will cause your son hurt, harm and confusion.. And a world of rejection. I’ve seen so many other mixed race people raised like that just come to the realisation that they are mixed and having issues as to why there parents caused them so much confusion. My mixed race hero is Bob Marley and he said “I don’t stand for the black mans side, I don’t stand for white man’s side, I stand for God’s side” Your son needs love and proper guidance don’t start being flaky. You have a mixed race son. Raise him in confidence in what he is, and who he will become. This will happen Ashley your husband tells your son he is black. The first thing your son will do will is look at you. His white mother who is not being included in his identity. How can that ever be right. I say this with love.
