The U.N. climate summit underway in Dubai marks the first time in nine years that representatives from Human Rights Watch have been allowed access to the United Arab Emirates. We speak with researcher Joey Shea about toxic pollution from UAE fossil fuels processing, and the state of political rights in the authoritarian country - especially for migrant workers who constitute 88% of the population but lack many labor protections under the kafala system. “There is no independent civil society in this country,” says Shea, adding that there is “sustained targeting of human rights defenders, activists, judges, lawyers, regular Emirati citizens” and anyone else who speaks out. Shea also warns that attendees of the COP28 conference are subject to mass surveillance from the moment they step foot in the country.

That and I cannot even begin to describe how useful it is to have a computer simulation damning us all to hell so the author of the simulation can be "a concerned scientist" when the technology was all there and completely ignored for analyzing a pandemic. Mind the furthermore - are we going to use Chinese coal deposits to have solar panels built and flown in to assemble virtue boats for Swedish girls to cross the Atlantic in full virtue towering above useless consumers?

As someone who grew up in Dubai, worked there and lived for 20 years, this video barely scratches the surface. Although i have fond memories of playing football and drinking chai, i was never okay with the obvious racist pay stuctures, lack of rights, and classist attitudes among the emirati population, who were more than 90% of my clientele. It is hypercapitalist, and Im glad i left

@@ahmedalmehairi1572 oh I've met many kind Emirati people as well, shared balaleet from their plates, i even worked with the prime minister's office, but unfortunately many people also had your attitude towards expats who helped build the country. I've been told many times that I wouldn't a project because I'm not white, or because of my accent etc etc. I've even been asked by business owners when I was a consultant if a salary of 1000 aed a month would be enough for a new hire from nepal. I understand that you might be offended, but denying the obvious racism and systemic issues isn't really helping the long term perception of the UAE.

The UAE? You're talking about a people who had no culture, no art, no history.
They were gold and people smugglers.
Who were still raiding each other on horseback in the 1970's.
Who have no real empathy with other Arabs.
Who's ultimate goal is to own a pair of gold leopards in their hallway.
Why would they care about some poor worker from the Asian subcontinent?

Where is HRW harsh criticism for the companies exploitation of the Congolese people in the DRC? Where there’s civil war, forced displacement, mass rape and child labor? Where’s the criticism on blood minerals? The inhumane work conditions millions of Congolese people are subjected to? Is it because the exploitation is mainly done Westerners? My statement is not in the defense of any oppressive country but where is the equality in coverage? Why isn’t the DRC being covered and exposed?
