- The United Arab Emirates planned to use its role as the host of UN climate talks as an opportunity to strike oil and gas deals, the BBC has learned.
Leaked briefing documents reveal plans to discuss fossil fuel deals with 15 nations.
The UN body responsible for the COP28 summit told the BBC hosts were expected to act without bias or self-interest.
The UAE team did not deny using COP28 meetings for business talks, and said "private meetings are private".
It declined to comment on what was discussed in the meetings and said its work has been focused on "meaningful climate action".

As of 2022, China was by far the world's largest coal consumer with 55% of energy use, an increase of 2% from the year before.
So China is accelerating the use of coal despite it having signed the Paris agreement.

For the few alternatives that don't exist, then it's up to people like you and me to create new businesses that will offert those alternatives. They won't appear out of nowhere by magic... Then it's also up to all of us (consumers) to encourage those new businesses offering alternatives rather than the old ones not making any effort.
As we speak, people are actually adopting lifestyles and consumption behaviors that require always more oil, not less. I can cite the fact that the sales of big 4x4 SUVs are increasing faster than any other type of vehicles, that the share of the population using public transit decreased in most cities since the pandemic, that the number of travelers by airplane keep increasing in all countries, that people can't cook anymore and purchase always more overpackaged industrial food, that online sales keep increasing (which requires tons and tons of disposable plastic packaging) and I could keep going with hundreds of examples.
