I think the best reason is the theme about finding your true self and accepting your shadow. Every Persona game (at least since 3) has the team accepting their shadows in some way or another but P4 makes it the focus of the story for the most part. Not only an interesting history, but also an easy to understand lore compared to 5 and 3, a cast that actually feel like a group of friends, a protagonist which has a perfect balance between serious and comedic, the one that introduced third tier personas, a plot twist that before 5 was pretty hard to expect, and better social links. P4G was my first Persona game and it hit me HARD. I barely noticed that the exposition was almost two hours long because it was presented so well. I played the game obsessively for months. P4G is a masterpiece.
Ngl, while my personal favorite might be P3 in terms of the battle system, P4 is my favorite in literally every other category. The game got a bunch of absolutely amazing improvements coming from p3 that I have been absolutely spoiled on and cannot live without now such as the ability to choose what skills your persona can learn in Fusion, the art style has a sort of timelessness to it that I really feels fits the Persona side of Shin Megami tensei perfectly, ironically much more than I feel Persona 5 does. But most importantly I feel the game's message about reaching out to the truth, per say, is exemplified in the multiple endings you can choose and the fact that you can completely miss the true ending of the game if you don't constantly aim to find the truth about the case. Persona 4 is my personal favorite to replay to experience the story and honestly I would rather replay it over Persona 5.
Completely agree - the quality of life improvements were HUGE for the series. I often hear players that come from P3 feel the same as you do - P4 flows so smoothly.
My friend and I discussed this. And the basic conclusion was that the P4 group seemed like good enough friends that they would still become friends even without the Persona stuff going on. I mean, maybe not the underclassmen, and Naoto wouldnt even be there if not for the murders, but its totally believeable that Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko would form a tight knit friend group even without the craziness. On the other hand, most of the P5 group dont seem like theyd get along under normal circumstances, at least compared to the P4 group.
I may be off base, but honestly I think it has more to do with accessibility. 4 has multiple anime, movies, was on Steam first, is older than 5, better manga and is in all spin offs, PLUS it's Dancing game came first. I think 3, at least Portable, is strictly better than 4 in almost every way, and I mean that literally besides a very small number of quality of life I don't think 4 is even close to 3, it's just so much easier to get a hold of.

From someone who lives in Europe, way off base. We only got P4G on the PS Vita which was a very unpopular and undersold console. So unles syou knew about it, you likely missed this amazing JRPG.
@@petenewby9882 Let's get this out of the way first. Physically P4 sold about 683K while P3 sold 689K, HOWEVER P4 also sold over 1M units over steam, which means it almost sold 1M more than P3. And this is all versions put together. (Source is a cite called Persona Central which has an article on physical sales for all game by 2020 and another article on P4 Steam sales from 2021) But that shows how much the Steam sales and overall exposure helped P4, which P3 didn't get.
Persona 4’s characters to me are the most well written in the series. The way they interact with each other and with the MC is really fun and makes them feel like a real group of friends which is something SEES and the PT lacked. (Obviously P1-P2 don’t have a focus on the social aspect but if they did I wouldn’t be surprised if P2IS was a contender for this title). When I finished P4 for the first time i had never felt that sad finishing a video game ever because I felt like I was leaving actual friends behind, whereas with every other game they just feel like characters with no connection to you the player behind the screen
In Persona 3's defence, I don't think the SEES members were supposed to get along very well. They were always quite harsh to one another, and I think that was intentional.
The story is not only good, but paced well with several plot twists. Certin decisions have urgancy and consequences, often leading to different outcomes for the story. The characters are likeable, and the small town setting is unique not only in the SMT/Persona franchise but in Japanese gaming as a whole. Speaking of the setting, Inaba feels like a living, breathing place, to the point where the town itself feels like a character in the story and not just a backdrop.
Quick question, I defeated ameno sagiri and after a cutscene with the others, it skips to the last day. Do we not get the opportunity to play during Jan, Feb and March? This is on ps2 btw.
Yeah the mystery is nice and all but the real reason people love it is because it makes you nostalgic for a simpler time with close friends even if you haven't experienced some of the events everything still feels familiar
P4G got the best cast since it's easier to likes them cuz they're friends as the game go on. Unlike p3 where they're kinda cold to each other for the most part. (I still love p3 more). As for p5, it's just weird combination of characters. I don't feel that friendly vibe.
Oh for sure- I feel like the p5 cast could have gotten along; I will honestly never understand why they didn't make them get along more. It would've been at least 30% better if they treated Ryuji like he was human imo- even Junpei got treated better than him. It is an odd mix of characters, but so was the p4 cast, and they got along wonderfully. The p5 cast was a missed opportunity.
@@Illhavesnakes yeah i was sad and also didnt understand why they didnt get along more... I mean even when Haru invite them to see the fireworks. It didnt feel genuine, i found that event kinda awkward.
@@GeminiSunrise06 nah in p4 only two ppl was already friends soon as u meet them chie and Yukiko Yosuke wasn’t close to them and you can tell because they call him by his last name only when y’all do because friends because the case they call each other by name in p3 it’s the same as person above said and in 5 it’s basically the same as 4 Ryuji and Ann knew each other since Middle school and the others come later
@@Illhavesnakes they did treat Ryuji good it was usually morgana that argue with him and call him names which is why a lot of players romance Ann just to get back at him
They learn each other's deepest secret (witnessing their own shadow). That's why P4 characters feels like a really close friends hanging out and struggle together
love every of them (also played smt iv/nocturne) but p2 eternal punishment and p4g remain the goats for me. the cast in both case is the best and they have a really intriguing story
Persona 4 always stuck out to me for having the most interesting cast. Persona 5’s cast feels like a bunch of friends you just met and are getting to know. But Persona 4’s cast feels like a group of friends you have known for a lifetime
My dad bought this game for me when i got my psvita (when it first came out) and it changed my life forever 😭❤️ now i am always on the hunt for games like these
Tbf the twist in Persona 4 is the main villain reveal while in Persona 5, it's a subversion of the new persona twist villain cliché that Atlus loves to use (Ikutsuki and Adachi). Instead of the twist being the villain, it's the main characters managing to outsmart the villain's schemes and making you the player think that you failed. That's the twist. And that's why imo it's the best twist in the current persona game.
@@Cynicalhamptur exactly. I don't get why so many people miss that the twist isn't who the culprit is. It is that the party knew long before you as the player figured it out.
Atlus themselves was not expecting Persona to be as popular as it was it’s crazy how a spin off surpassed the main games I love persona the first time I played these game I was surprised to find a game about a group of teenagers was surprisingly mature the characters had real issues and trials that they had to face and overcome. So many themes especially in p4 about embracing who you’re really resonated with me very few games do this. And on top of that it’s just an awesome Jrpg in general it hits all the boxes amazing story great characters good battle system music these games have it all As for persona 6 that will definitely be on all platforms can’t wait to see what they do with that one
This is my first ever persona game, and I’m so glad I began with this one. As a teen the messages this game shared, especially in the first half, it meant so much. And inspires me to “face my true self” and keep living.
True reason : persona 4 is an awesome game that a lot of people who are currently active on the internet grew up with. I really don't think the story is better than 5 of 3 Out of those three, 4 story might actually be the weakest, but it compensates with very touching confident and fun light hearted and heatwarming interaction withing the party.
So basically in other words... nostalgia. I discovered the Persona series last year, played P5 and loved it. Wanted more and then played P4. I was expecting some kind of masterpiece by how praised this game is, esp when it comes to characters and story. And I really liked it, but it was definitely weaker than P5 in every way. The dungeons, the characters, the story, the villain/antagonist, the music (even though the music is still awesome in P4) just everything P4 did, P5 did better. Even the annoying mascot is not as annoying as in P4 lol
Technically my first persona game although it was so good that since I was renting it I sent it back immediately as I wanted to own it. But bought persona 3 FES first as it was cheaper then I played 4. Such a good series!
@@personacheese yeah i was so excited when I got it. That Christmas I got persona 4! And years later I got a vita for Christmas and P4 Golden. Best gift during the holidays!
Yep, story was amazing and characters were equally amazing. But major props to 3 and 5, still absolutely amazing, too. I still need to get around to the first 2.
Because it is genuinely one of the best video games of all time, from its environment and characters, to its awesome art style that literally beats out what Gamefreak does today in 2022. Its truly something special
I think 4 is most popular, because it’s got great social links and for the most part, the story doesn’t have a bad part. 3’s social links are the weakest, due to it being the first to do so and 5 has some story issues, especially Morgana bitching off for no real reason and makes it seem like Ryuji is mean to him, despite Morgana is more rude to Ryuji and the fact Joker can’t do crap that part of the game without the bitch, so it really leaves you upset. I think 4 has the best mechanics all around and definitely set the standard for ten game. But all three are great and I’m glad 3 is being remade, because it needs it.
Persona 5 is flashy but persona 4 made me feel like a citizen of Inaba, it’s probably because people actually want to talk to me in P4 instead of shitting their pants when I look in their direction
Persona 3 was a great game. Persona 5 was a great game, better even than 3. But Persona 4 remains, in my heart, the best, and the only one I keep returning to.
P4 is without a doubt the most charming game i have ever played by such a wide margin. So many chacters that I love and even the ones that i pretend to hate i secretly still love them. I'd legit play persona 4 if the rpg combat and tv exploration wasn't there at all, whereas i couldn't say the same about persona 5 even though i love that game too. Basically i came to the game for the story and gameplay, i stayed because i couldn't stop loving the cast of characters.
I think the epilogues are enough to prove who’s a real friend group, both p5 and p4 friend groups hang out post game, the p3 friend group all but falls apart as soon as the answer rolls around because Makoto and sees were the only reasons they tolerated each other half the time
I remember that Adachi twist got.me. playing as a kid I had no clue who it was and had to literally google who the killer was when you had to tell Naoto.
Persona 4 is a wonderful game with well thought out gameplay, easy to understand features and story, a beautiful presentation and a charm that you simply can’t find anywhere else

(Source is a cite called Persona Central which has an article on physical sales for all game by 2020 and another article on P4 Steam sales from 2021)
But that shows how much the Steam sales and overall exposure helped P4, which P3 didn't get.
You can't see shadow without glasses 🤓
P3 : sacrifice and losing someone you love
P4 : facing our true self
P5 : freedom and free will
P4 has the best characters in persona
@@fabio.b3711 for the PS2 version, that's normal.
Yeah the mystery is nice and all but the real reason people love it is because it makes you nostalgic for a simpler time with close friends even if you haven't experienced some of the events everything still feels familiar
The specialist dance keeps this whole game alive to this day
Persona 4 characters and setting is grounded to our world which makes the experience better
This is a fantastic take - a more relatable world would certainly connect with the player base more
Like jojo's part 4
Still i cant believe it was the gas station guy
P4G got the best cast since it's easier to likes them cuz they're friends as the game go on.
Unlike p3 where they're kinda cold to each other for the most part. (I still love p3 more).
As for p5, it's just weird combination of characters. I don't feel that friendly vibe.
That's true - P4 is has a happier vibe, whereas like you pointed out, P3's cast is pretty harsh on eachother.
@@Illhavesnakes they did treat Ryuji good it was usually morgana that argue with him and call him names which is why a lot of players romance Ann just to get back at him
Played 5 Royal first but I’ve fallen in love with the series as a whole thanks to 4 Golden
I love persona 4 golden because I made friends in the game . (u know what I mean) They are like friends it felt that I really bind with them
It wasn’t a fun mystery they got their answer literally from thin air there was no build up to the answer they just somehow got it.
I will never forget the thrill I felt when protag awakened Izanagi-no-okami and shot the Myriad of Truths to Izanami. Epic game!
P5>P3>P4, that's all I've played
2 words: Heartbeat, Heartbreak
persona 4 was literally my whole childhood.
"...it comes down to the story."
....I agree, but the OSTs from 2008 and it's updated versions and adaptations afterward are straight-up therapudic.
You're 100% correct there
Persona 4 really fits the title persona having the theme of self acceptance.
mans really said “because it’s a good game”
They learn each other's deepest secret (witnessing their own shadow). That's why P4 characters feels like a really close friends hanging out and struggle together
love every of them (also played smt iv/nocturne) but p2 eternal punishment and p4g remain the goats for me. the cast in both case is the best and they have a really intriguing story
P4 Golden is honestly the best JRPG of all time for me (I dont consider Dark Souls a jrpg).
@@FSVR54 since when dark souls is jrpg?
@@FSVR54since when could dark souls ever be a JRPG it’s a soulsborne
@@gurshaundhesi8086 it's a japanese game that's an rpg...
don't forget P4 got the peak specialist dance
Also the animated series for 4 is the best and actually gives the MC a personality
Persona 4 always stuck out to me for having the most interesting cast. Persona 5’s cast feels like a bunch of friends you just met and are getting to know. But Persona 4’s cast feels like a group of friends you have known for a lifetime
My dad bought this game for me when i got my psvita (when it first came out) and it changed my life forever 😭❤️ now i am always on the hunt for games like these
After P4 i felt nostalgia about a childhood i never had....
P4 made you determine who was the villain, whilst P5 made it very obvious
Yeah I was pretty shocked who the villain was in 4 but in 5 I knew who it was on the first day
Gee its almost as if it was never meant to be a secret who the villain was in P5. Holy shit you P4 fangirls truly do have brain damage
Loved p4 but it was pretty obvious who the killer was
It's got the homies Yosuke and Kanji
Atlus themselves was not expecting Persona to be as popular as it was it’s crazy how a spin off surpassed the main games
I love persona the first time I played these game I was surprised to find a game about a group of teenagers was surprisingly mature the characters had real issues and trials that they had to face and overcome.
So many themes especially in p4 about embracing who you’re really resonated with me very few games do this. And on top of that it’s just an awesome Jrpg in general it hits all the boxes amazing story great characters good battle system music these games have it all
As for persona 6 that will definitely be on all platforms can’t wait to see what they do with that one
I really don't think the story is better than 5 of 3
Out of those three, 4 story might actually be the weakest, but it compensates with very touching confident and fun light hearted and heatwarming interaction withing the party.
“Why is Persona 4 so popular?”
“Cuz it’s good, k bye”
And it’s the best one. (Though maybe that opinion stems from the fact it’s the first one I played)
This may also be the case with me 😅
P3 feels like you are just a hired manager with unpredictable superiors and coworkers who always try to take your place, kinda real 😅
Brooooo persona 4 is AWESOME!!!!! I PLAY THIS GAME FOR PS2 NOW I FOUND IN PS4 AND PS5 I STARTED CRYING OF HAPPINESS 😊
A few years ago i decided to play jrpgs. Persona 4 was the first jrpg I bought, so it will always be special to me.
Technically my first persona game although it was so good that since I was renting it I sent it back immediately as I wanted to own it. But bought persona 3 FES first as it was cheaper then I played 4. Such a good series!
Hahaha that's awesome brother! Glad you were able to get your hands on a P3 copy :)
@@personacheese yeah i was so excited when I got it. That Christmas I got persona 4! And years later I got a vita for Christmas and P4 Golden. Best gift during the holidays!
"So step on up to the plaaaaaatttteeeee, face your fate, walking straight into the LIONS DEEEEENNNNNNN!!!"
Persona 4 is best because it has Adachi. Simple as
Agreed
Yep, story was amazing and characters were equally amazing. But major props to 3 and 5, still absolutely amazing, too. I still need to get around to the first 2.
everyone hated yu back then.
he had a bowlcut which was widely hated because of justin bieber
😂he's grown on us over the years hahaha
Not me thinking of the persona beauty filter
Because it is genuinely one of the best video games of all time, from its environment and characters, to its awesome art style that literally beats out what Gamefreak does today in 2022. Its truly something special
It's comfy, down to Earth, 100% relatable, the characters are very good, the music is fantastic....i could go on for hours
Prolly just cause its on pc compared to the other games, till Friday atleast. I have it and imo it was the most boring persona game between p3-p5
Its Adachi, he's everywhere
Helps that Giant Bomb helped popularised Let's Plays by playing through the original
HEARTBREAK HEARTBREAK 🗣️🗣️
It's the goofy aah dialogue options for me
Perfect llisten for my 10 hour shift today!
P4: specialist dance
Adachi gang where we at?
Best villain of all time!
Eating cabbage.
The only persona game I can play 10+ times and still feel like I’m playing it for the first time, I love Persona 4 so much
I think the epilogues are enough to prove who’s a real friend group, both p5 and p4 friend groups hang out post game, the p3 friend group all but falls apart as soon as the answer rolls around because Makoto and sees were the only reasons they tolerated each other half the time
I remember that Adachi twist got.me. playing as a kid I had no clue who it was and had to literally google who the killer was when you had to tell Naoto.
Maybe you mean, wholesome character
Persona 4 is a wonderful game with well thought out gameplay, easy to understand features and story, a beautiful presentation and a charm that you simply can’t find anywhere else
For me Persona 4 Golden is the reason why I got into persona so yeah
