There is a complete and edited version of his run on here somewhere and it shows him on the £500,000 question seeming certain on an answer but then changing his mind after the cough. Definitely something strange.

The coughing contestant went on the show in a different episode. He did poorly, only winning a £1,000.
They were more, but not all know they were in it, not his wife but the other sat closer and spoke about the answers with others around him and then ensured the answer. There is a full video of this where they explain it more, it is interesting. Too greedy cheater, if he stopped earlier he would get away with it

Something not mentioned here is that Whitock didn't know about half the answers himself, so he was asking other contestants while he was sitting in that area with them. It must have been painfully obvious to the contestants.

My plan would be to cough the answer but at spread out intervals. Clearing of the throat means take the number of coughs as the answer. For 4 or more coughs no throat cleaning would be necessary. That and better acting would have done the job lol

Not many people may be aware of this, but Charles Ingram was not the only person to have his prize money withdrawn. There were 3 other contestants who were also stripped of their winnings from January to March 1999: Neil Muir, Andrew Lavelle, and Sheridan Booth. Whilst these contestants did not dishonestly win their prizes, it was discovered that all of them had criminal records and lied about it on their application forms.
Such a sad world we live in where ex convicts need to lie about not being prosecuted in order to be integrated into society.
