Cheaper Parts for Old Tractors

  • Not everyone wants, or can afford or justify a new tractor. If you're trying to bring an older tractor back to life the price of replacement parts may shock you, occasionally they're not even available from the manufacturer. If you're trying to cut some corners, or find those obsolete parts, you may need the assistance of a good tractor salvage yard.
Today we're going to talk about finding good used parts (they really don't like the word "salvage") with Terri, who owns The Tractor Barn at Republic, Missouri, and has been providing used parts for most of her life. She's also Secretary of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. The NTPDA is an organization of dealers who sell used parts, and if you're looking for someone in your area who is a member and offers them (even if you live in another country) you can go to their website: www.ntpda.com/ and find that information.
Terri brought out some points about the business that you should know when searching for parts. First, most salvage yard specialize in one particular brand. Terri is a Ford Tractor person, in our area there are also folks that specialize in Deere, International, White and Minneapolis-Moline, and Deutz. If you have one of those brands, that's who you'd see for used parts. Because these folks specialize, they are a wealth of information about everything related to their particular brand. Generally, if you don't know who specializes in a particular brand of parts, you can probably call any NTPA member and they'll head you in the right direction.
In the old days, salvage yards were acres and acres of old machines and if you wanted a particular part you had to bring your toolbox and remove it yourself. Today that's generally not the case. Most part are removed from the old tractors and then cataloged and stored inside in parts bins just like the new ones are.
We learned in the video that some of the older tractors are getting really hard to find parts for and that's a problem. There are also some aftermarket folks making new replacements for some of the high-demand parts and they may be CHEAP, but they may not be as good as the original part. The old rule of thumb was that salvage parts cost half as much as new, but with the off-brand, third world built cheap replacements floating around, they may be a lot higher than that in relation to them. You kinda get what you pay for with parts.
Finally, there are some big used parts conglomerates springing up, they may offer way more inventory from their multiple locations, but most don't have the expertise that the single-brand focused yards have. The operators of the latter type of yards tend to be older and have more years of experience with their brand that the multi-location yards.
Terri says a lot of the older "ma and pa" salvage yards are closing as the owners near retirement and that's sad. I've always enjoyed trips to tractor salvage yards. You just never know what you're going to see, you get a history lesson, and there's almost always good discussion about the passion that we all share...tractors.

Best tractor salvage story ever. A guy needed a rare part for a tractor. Searched everywhere. Finally found one at John Doe tractor salvage. Went to pick it up. John Doe tells him 150 bucks. Guy squeals like a cut cougar. John Does reaches under the counter, grabs a hammer and smashes the part. Then tells the customer, I have one more for 300 bucks, do you want it?
Customer took it for 300 bucks and walked away with his tail between his legs and a lesson learned. True story, obviously not John Doe, but I knew the guy, and definitely something he would have done

Rebuilds for electrical equipment seem to still be pretty cheap. My MF 35 burned out its original starter, shopped and found some that MIGHT fit for $150-200 plush about $50- 60 shipping from the sheer weight. Luckily I knew a guy who used to be a mechanic at the local John Deere dealer and he mentioned a small place who rebuilds stuff that they used frequently for older models, took it to them and picked it up the next day for $75. Now I turn the key and the engine roars after one crank

We usually just go to eBay or Amazon for the parts we need. It helps when you have a machine that they made a ton of.

I've been trying to find head lights for my AC-5040 diesel tractor. I have found the lights but not the attachment arms that connect the light to the engine cover. Some previous owner had the wiring harness all chopped and splice so I found a new harness online but no instructions that tell which wires go to what location.

You might try All States Ag Parts in Sikeston, Missouri at (573) 471-2727. I doubt that the part is still available from an AGCO dealer, but you might look it up on AGCO's parts website and get the part number and Google it. Here's the link to it: apb.agcocorp.com/. Good luck!

Sooooo......it would seem to me that the part cost goes up if you have to pay someone to go get it.

I bought a New Holland TC40 that's 40 hp engine when I was working at a New Holland dealership, when my dad passed away I inherited his Massey Ferguson 362 that's 62 engine, 55 PTO. I probably should sell dad's tractor because I don't need two tractors and it doesn't get run that much, but it's dad's and there something inside of me that can't let it go.

Give a call to Ranchland Tractor in Saucier, Mississippi at (228) 832-8300. Talk to David. He has some Zetor parts he'd like to move. They're new parts, but he'd like them to go away and would make you a good deal on them.

The younger guys don’t know how to work on them? Oh please. The older tractors are nearly all mechanical and so easy to work on. The old fogies working on them say the younger generations don’t know how because we simply don’t have every bolt’s torque value memorized. Stick an old guy who only works on old stuff and put him on a tractor with problems that has all computerized fuel injection, electric SCV’s, and a CVT and they’ll be lost. Easier for a younger mechanic to work on an older tractor than it is try and teach an old guy who can’t run a computer how plug in and run a diagnostic check.
