  • Classified X is a 1998 French-US documentary movie written by Melvin Van Peebles, directed by Mark Daniels and narrated by Van Peebles, that details the history of black people in American cinema throughout the 20th century.
    from the DVD case:
"...the very first thing we must do is to reconquer our own minds. The biggest obstacle to the Black revolution in America is our conditioned susceptibility to the white man's program. In short, the fact is that the white man has colonized our minds. We've been violated, confused and drained by this colonization and from this brutal, calculated genocide, the most effective and vicious racism has grown, and it is with this starting point in mind and the intention to reverse the process that I went into cinema in the first f***ing place." -Melvin Van Peebles
Melvin Van Peebles, director of the breakthrough movie Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, turns his acerbic 4 insights and acid-dripped humor on Hollywood's utilization of its sepia citizens. Classified X examines the treatment of .A black characters throughout the history of American cinema. Van Peebles uses examples from classic films beginning with footage by Thomas Edison in 1903 to the present, tracing how Hollywood has aided and abetted the public perception of the African-American down through the years. From its earliest days, Van Peebles says, Hollywood reflected society's_ fear of blacks and countered with wish-fulfilling images of African Americans as servile, ignorant, superstitious, or untrustworthy. With candor and wit, he explores the institutionalization of racism before Sweetback and afterwards.

I second this "thanks"; used to have the doc on DVD when I taught mass media, but left it with the college library when I quit. I'm especially grateful tonight, with the news of Mr. Van Peebles's death. I know what I'll be re-watching tonight.

Well young man , I did live through the mid-60ties and 70ties as a youngster and a little later a teen . The Pain , Rage , and Mental exploitation with no pressure relief valve like a water heater has , that you just felt , multiply your anguish x 1000 % , then you can maybe 🤔 help me bear my cross the rest of the distance to the Black Man’s Gol-go-tha ; I am Thankful to humbly say , I am a few days away from celebrating my 65th Birthday , I’ve had many various “ pressure cooker “ … Outbursts , screaming 🙀 in my Head , since I was about 30ish , realizing for the First Time in my and my younger brother’s life , how totally Brainwashed , Mentally and Emotionally manipulative , The Master Chest Player’s were and yet are exclusively pledged to the obliteration of the Black Psychic. My brother and I probably spent a Million hours of our childhood and teenage years watching after school …choirs done , homework checked by Mom , Every afternoon , Every Saturday and Sunday , all day until bedtime. Nothing but “ White “ heroes , cartoons , T.V. shows and all Movies , nobody looked like us , lived in our neighborhood’s , eat our foods or households lived like ours… My brother and I never discussed these observations while He was yet alive , so my young brother who’s comment’s I have latched upon , Please forgive my excessive wording, these thoughts have been racing around the speed track of my conscience and subconscious when I see context similar to this , I have never expressed these thoughts on anyone in my life up until these minutes. I’ve often wondered if a Black psychologist has ever written or spoke to my anguishing ? Any thoughts or suggestions ??? I would be unspeakably Thankful 🥲. Mr. Phillips. ( 559) 554-7171 Thanks in advance

ZeldaYah one of the greatest actors of all time was the black puerto rican actor ; Juano Hernandez who was shown in this documentary as the old man in the movie; Intruder in the Dust" . He came before Sidney Poitier and had such dignity and strength that Hollywood did not know how to cast him, this despite his immense talent. The same with brilliant artists like Dorothy Dandridge, Canada Lee, and Woody Strode.

    • @zeldag

@@stedye I agree totally with you. Mr Hernandez did get Golden Globe nom for that film. Mr Woody Stode was Magnificent. All of the them were truly talentef and yet today we barely know who they were. I had to look up Mr Hernandez and Mr Canada. Sad, I know....The pressure must have been terrible....The fear of Power and Grace.

The 50yr black cinema because of segregation was completely unknown to me. I wonder if there is a library of these films? Belongs at the African American Smithsonian building. Next time I visit I will pay more attention to the black cinema section. I don’t remember seeing it when I was there.

@James Anderson I think they pair well. It's important not just to understand this, but to contemplate how contemporary Black entertainers become complicit in the reproduction of this. Bamboozled teaches us that not knowing our history and being so hungry for money and fame that we degrade ourselves destroys us, and that resistance needs to be constructive, rather than destructive. Learned a lot from that movie, and own it. Saw it in theater when it came out. Still haunted by it.

RIP Melvin Van Peebles, died Tuesday, 21 Sept. 2021 at his home in Manhattan. Called the "godfather of modern Black cinema," he was 89 years old.
"Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song," his transformative 1971 actioner, is on UA-cam a half dozen times, so if you have not already seen it, now is certainly the time -- even though IMBD currently gives it a mere 5.5*. When the MPA gave the picture an X-rating, Peebles added the tagline, "Rated X by an all-white jury." Gotta love it.
Just found this and have yet to watch, but my hope is that this documentary will be as important in its area - and as fascinating - as "The Celluloid Closet," a groundbreaking study by Vito Russo, scholar and figurehead of the gay rights movement. (A documentary based on his book was released in 1969.)

Oh yeah the last but not least: the secretive black Gay man/brother with an STD not mentioned to the naive out of town black woman. 🤔

So profound to think in 2020 we’re still trying to fight this miscarriage of justice, art & music. Thanks @karenhuntershow, I did the Homework, now I’m going to do my part in the classroom. Kudos Mr. Van Peebles, sorry this work is still needed today.

1994 through 2004 I was a stuntwoman in Hollywood. Countless times I experienced soooo much of the racism rabbit hole unaware yet this documentary succinctly explains too much of my experience.

Francine Morris: I am quite sure you also experienced a great deal of sexism, as well. ReelBlack is intending to pay tribute to the Black Stuntmen and women of Hollywood. We will discuss the contributions of performers such as Eddie Smith, Ernie Robinson, Alex Brown, Calvin Brown, Peaches Jones, Louise Johnson, Len Glascow, Bob Minor, Jadie David, Evelyn Coffey, Willie Harris, among many others. You have had an exciting career as a stunt person; sadly, it was shortened by a motorcycle accident on the set of "Family Matters." That is part of the story that needs to be also told. The one about the many life-threatening or career-ending stunts demanded of these daring men and women. We hope that you achieve the success you are seeking in your new endeavors. Also, we would welcome your assistance and participation in this topic. Thank you so much for your viewing support. Peace and Blessings!!!

Good to see you’ve done some research yet my career didn’t end with that motorcycle accident. I am not finished with stunts. I am on hiatus until further notice..., Another name to include on that list is Sonya Davis who died doing highfall during Eddie Murphy’s ‘Vampire in Brooklyn’. I was who replaced Sonya. I went to her funeral. I knew at that moment I had better be sure I was the best I could be. We had stunt-trained in Hollywood. The experience of following in her footsteps was eye-opening. I would love to share and help in your endeavors! Reel Entertainment Dimensions is my production company. Contact me at reeled2019@gmail.com. Yes, I have much to say on the sexism topic and much more! I look forward to collaborating.

Also, another tidbit: I felt I had been set up for that motorcycle accident. I believe it was intentional and deliberate -another tentacle of racism and sexism rarely communicated...,

@@francinemorris2957 Ms. Morris, thank you for your response and willingness to share your story. This will be brought to Mike D's attention, and he will contact you to determine what will work best so that this project can come to fruition. I am excited and look forward to getting this underway.
